Time to recount the year's top crime stories: In no particular order, here's my list:

1. Colorado and legal recreational marijuana
2. Edward Snowden and NSA Phone Records
3. Guantanamo Hunger Strikes
4. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and the Boston Marathon Bombing
5. The George Zimmerman trial
6. DOJ and Kim Dotcom
7. DOJ and Aaron Swartz
8. Mexico's Release of Rafael Caro-Quintero
9. Adam Lanza (and efforts to enact new gun control laws)
10. Oscar Pistorius

    if you'd call it a fine for a crime or a vig or a mosquito bite, but I'd add the JP Morgan Chase 13 billon fine/vig to the 2013 list.

    ...was levied because, well, it's the year two thousand 13. I have to cling to this "logic," otherwise I can't understand how these fines are figured at all. Not a one of them EVER has any real teeth, is never more than a quarter of the last quarter's profits, sigh, just give them a BJ, offer them more tax loopholes, and let's just stop fooling ourselves. "Respectable" grifters run the show, and the rest of us are just piss-ant, low stakes gnats to them -- annoying to consider in their ultimate powerlessness, and thus totally inconsequential.

    Not that I'm in the intensive care unit of skepticism or anything. Not that I'm two blocks away from cynicism. Oh no.

    of the damages for big bankster misdeeds run as high as 100 billion plus.  It's good to have the president's ear...just ask Jamie "Nickel And" Dimon.

    ...would really mean it's as readily and freely accessible as alcohol. It's not there yet. But I will bait my breath and watch the societal progress the good people of Colorado have granted themselves.

    being #1. (no particular order noted) I predict others will follow fairly soon as the watch crime drop and revenues rise.  my new goal is to,within three years, sell my house and relocate to one of those states.  of course the gay rights decisions would be a tie. in particular the recent utah decision.  I really think that might be one more hole in the dike than they have fingers fill.
