A new season of Homeland begins tonight on Showtime. Same for The Good Wife. Also, there's a new episode of Boardwalk Empire. In case anyone's watching, here's a place to discuss them.

Paul Krugman, in today's NYT column, (5.00 / 2) (#31)

takes down Simpson-Bowles as he looks ahead to President Obama's re-election (with electoral caveats of Nov 8). Krugman notes the inevitable calls for the president to endorse the budget proposal of the deficit commission co-chairs, reminding readers that this is a proposal of the co-chairs and never adopted by the commission they co-chaired.

Professor Krugman says a big "no" should be registered to such a clamor, arguing that the election has the shape of a referendum on our social insurance system and President Obama will emerge with a clear mandate for preserving and extending that system.

While in agreement, I would back-up Professor Krugman's opinion to the time remaining in the campaign, particularly the debates. President Obama should not agree that we all agree that "entitlements" need to be curbed and it is just a mater of how best to do it--such as collecting the best ideas from R's and D's, but to make the differences clear.

Mr. Obama's return to his 2008 idea of raising the social security cap (re-stated at the AARP meeting in Florida) and explain how the ACA, especially the pilot projects, may deal with health care costs, but, more cogently, present the real issue--health care cost increases over time, either private or public, including the costs of progress in treatments. Oh, and I would pledge, also, to get rid of Simpson and Bowles, the men. A well-deserved retirement should be in their futures.

Elizabeth Warren continues to show strength in the polls in Massachusetts. In seven polls in the state in September she has led in five of them. The most recent from the Boston Globe has Warren at +5.

That eventually they would have to either have his sister working with him, or something "happens" to her. They aren't biologically related so other things are possible too that they seem to be stearing towards.

pretty much all along, and he helps her with cases. I think maybe this season will go in that direction. I love the plotline with LaGuerta finding the blood slide and re-examining the Doakes issue.

a series of books. "Darkly Dreaming Dexter" I think was the first. I've only read a couple of them. The show is better.

in Sunday's New York Times by J.D. Kleinke, a member of the very conservative American Enterprise Institute. I think it's an excellent article because he highlights a few of the better aspects of the bill, and it shows why Republicans are total hypocrites for opposing the mandate, insurance exchanges, and protections for women's reproductive health.

it is a little stronger.

The problem with this bill is its a few good things wrapped in a ball of cr*p.

It does not reduce cost.

It does increase access a bit but at an extremely high cost and when you count in the people who will eventually loose their current care because it will be unavoidable for businesses to meet the regulations it really doesn't.

So what is it? A new entitlement that makes a bad problem worse.

The only way to like this program is to look at the positives while ignoring the negatives.

That's like looking at Iraq and saying it was all worth it because we killed Saddam.

crux of the problem is the insurance companies business model. A for profit insurance model is NEVER going to reduce costs. That's the crux of the problem with Obamacare.

to watch Dexter, I should not be so annoyed by Clair Danes' character on Homeland, but I just can't help it. I nearly spit up my wine when there was a line that says she is the only operative the contact will trust. Might work if we had ever seen any evidence of her trustworthiness, but I remain mystified as to how she became such a high level agent, on first name basis with the higher-ups, etc. I just can't get past it.

My daughter has a great voice and sang in school choir since grade school. When we were Colorado Springs during her Jr High years her choir teacher was very tough but in all the right ways. When you went to a performance you were there for hours too, and kids who put in time and effort were eventually awarded solos. If you have ten kids giving it their all you got ten solos. She and her choirs won many awards.
The school system here has regular choir and show choir. There were only so many slots for show choir and it had been chosen when we arrived. She signed up for "regular" choir but the instructor was so in love with himself and his traveling show choir that he only focused on show choir, and during her period would even be working with show choir and told the regular choir to do their homework.
So she gets a black sharpie and writes on the wall in front of everyone doing homework "Mr blankety blank SUCKS". She didn't tell us how choir was panning out, she didn't think that her parents needed to line out an adult teacher for her. The guy was a douche and she surmises that in his quiet moments he must suspect he is, and he probably does. So this and suspension was what happened. I was arguing with her about what a bad choice she had made and she shrugged and asked me to deny that the teacher sucked. And I couldn't

My husband does. Hey, I cuss, I'm just not creative. My oldest granddaughter is defining bad words now. If you say a bad word she notifies you I guess, I have to guess because I don't get notified. I get a cuss pass for some reason. She was a few weeks ago talking to her other grandmother about bad words. This grandmother is called MiMi and I'm NeeNee. MiMi says that she is trying to quit cussing when they were discussing bad words. For some reason my granddaughter told her with great pride that her NeeNee will never quit cussing :)

Yeah, I have to watch myself around people sometimes. Living alone I let fly when I do something stupid...which is often.

Could someone point me to a good discussion of electoral politics with regard to 270 and a possible Romney victory? I've seen them before but I can't seem to locate one now - possibly I'm not googling the right terms.

For example, if Ohio goes Obama, then Romney has to win FL, CO, etc. in order to reach 270....

The most I ever had as a child was 16 colors. I used to longingly eye 32 colors and never even dared to aspire to 64 colors. That was way too extravagant with 5 of us in school.

I just took a look and the 64-count Crayola crayon set can be purchased for less than $5.00. Right now, at this moment, I really, really want to buy them. Just because I can.

I bet I can find a way to use them in my art pieces ... even if it's not my medium... hmmm...
