Yesterday, Google turned 14, Lil' Wayne turned 30, Gwynneth Paltrow turned 40 and Meatloaf turned 65.

Today, it's my turn.

I'm taking the day off from blogging, so here's an open thread, all topics welcome.

Middle age is really a special time in life -- we're old enough to clearly know better, but still young enough to occasionally say "Oh, what the f***! Who cares what people think?"

... how old you are, then please take my late grandmother's advice and tell people that you're older than you really are, so that other people will compliment you on how wonderful you look for your age.
I'm going to be 52 next February. I found that turning 50 was actually liberating for me personally, because the pretentions of youth fell away and I could just be myself. From an emotional standpoint, my teens and young adulthood were trying times for me, and in retrospect, I had a helluva lot of growing up to do. I love being middle aged, and wouldn't be in my 20s again for all the world.

and in the banking sector, I'm applying "creative math" to my Birthdays. I reappraise my age every birthday and (surprise, surprise) I find I'm actually younger than I originally projected.
It's quite encouraging.

As I inch closer to 60, birthdays have become, for me, about acknowledging the many blessings - family, health, maybe a little more wisdom - I've somehow been able to accumulate on this journey. This year, I looked around the dinner table and thanked my husband for putting up with me for 32 years, thanked my daughters for becoming such fine young women and bringing two wonderful young men into our family, thanked those young men for loving my daughters, and thanked God - and the expectant parents! - for the new life that one of my daughters and her husband are bringing into the world in December.

"Stuff?" I've got more of that than one person could ever need or want; the love of family, and friends - that really is priceless, and I wish you an embarrassment of riches on that front this year and every year.

The years have gone by too quickly
In my 20's I aspired to be something
In my 30's I started to acquire stuff
In my 40's I had to maintain my stuff
In my 50's I realized how much time I had wasted on such stupid stuff
It doesn't matter what you do or what material stuff you acquire .....our lasting legacy is really about how we lived our lives and cared for those we loved .

Never had much stuff or a lot of desire for stuff, but I wish I had tried harder to develop relationships.
These days I really appreciate the chance to teach and mentor some really excellent students where I am now. I'm also very glad to have more time for my own research, and to work on music.
Still, like many of us, I can say I spent time pursuing many things which were not worth it, and not enough time on people.

as you and I edge ever closer to collecting on our decades of investment in our "entitlement" -- and to continuing to work, anyway, as we cannot plan on what the heck the payoff on our investment will be. (Just another way, Jeralyn, of saying that I appreciate a site where the host is another woman of our certain age so takes a stand on this uncertainty . . . and also shares so many memories, such as marking with me the anniversary each year of the Kent State killings.)

First, they got the second quarter way wrong:

In a surprise, the Commerce Department on Thursday marked down second-quarter U.S. growth to 1.3% from 1.7% in its third and final review of the April-to-June period. The third revision rarely involves such a big change.

Um ... oops. Second, job projections for September don't look good:

economists expect job growth in September to average about 100,000, perhaps slightly more. That's not even enough to keep up with the natural increase in the working-age population, never mind sharply cut into an 8.1% unemployment rate.

procedures anywhere, but I'm getting tired of being told something won't hurt, and then screaming my lungs out in pain when they are wrong.
Bandage change today, after minor surgery yesterday.
"Will this hurt?"
"No"
"Really? I'm a little concerned"
"No, it won't hurt at all"
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAURGHHHHHHHHH!" "Just a little more"
"imprecations in Russian"....whew, done.
"Oh, the surgeon left something in the incision to inhibit infection. We had to take it out. That's what hurt"
.. as if the explanation really makes up for the
loss of trust and blow to my dignity.

Actually I don't care that much, because the pain was brief, and I'll be fine soon.
However, I am definitely anxious about the bandage change tomorrow! I am considering trying a Russian solution and drinking half a bottle of vodka before I go to the hospital.

Reminds me of an episode of Maude, in which her frustrated young grandson uttered a cuss word and then ran upstairs, which prompted and incredulous Walter (Bill Macy) to ask aloud, "Where in the Hell did that little pisser ever learn language like that?" -- to which an equally stunned Maude (Bea Arthur) replied in all seriousness, "Damned if I know!"
