Ryan has too many, and too ready, sociopathic tendencies. His conflations about his own personal athletic accomplishments, his disgusting lies about his college employment to a constituent asking about student loan debt burdens increasing, all of it, the guy will steal your car and then try to sell you the stereo, he's either going to phuck up completely or try so hard NOT to be his usual prevaricating self that the result will be the same. Biden, as irritating as I find him personally and politically, should make mince-meat of that minor league twit.

They'd be much better off just saying screw it and giving Olsen the VP gig.

We had a death in the family this week. My aunt had been diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer three months ago, and thank Heavens, she went very quickly and didn't suffer too much. We flew over to L.A. on Tuesday, then drove down to San Diego with my mother the next day for the funeral and burial.

Southern California is an oven right now, the third day of triple digits temperatures -- absolutely miserable. It was 108 degrees where we were yesterday in El Cajon (15 miles inland from San Diego proper). And because we were gone for three days, when we returned last night to my mother's place in Pasadena (where it was a mere 105), we opened up the door upon our arival and -- Mon Dieu, it was a skullpopping 101 degrees inside the house.

It's a good thing UCLA is hosting Houston tonight at 7:30 p.m. in the Rose Bowl, rather than during the day. Otherwise, I'd fear for the players and fans.

We return to Honolulu this Tuesday, and then I have to fly back to the Bay Area the following Monday for the week.

While her death was certainly not unexpected, it's still difficult nonetheless. She was really a sweet woman, and made to one day past her 61st wedding anniversary.

My uncle is a tough old Tea Party-loving right-wing bird, and she was a Roosevelt Democrat, so I often wondered how they ever lived together sometimes, but this week was the first time I've seen him actually show his age.

My wife and I offered to clean out my aunt's closet for him yesterday morning and pack up her clothes and other personal belongings, and much to my mother's surprise he accepted. Her death is probably really tough on him; 61 years is a long time to be together.

pack up my dad's things for a couple months after he died; I think his things gave her some comfort - it was like having him there until she was ready to let that part of him go.
Stuns me to realize that I am now the age my mom was when my dad died - at the time, I know I didn't think of her as being all that young, but now that I'm that age, I realize that, yeah, 59 is young to lose your husband.
It's going to be tough on your uncle, for sure - after 61 years of being with someone, it's going to be hard to accept her absence. I'm sure he'll be inundated with food offerings from the widows in his social group, and don't be shocked if, a year from now, he's not planning to get married again. After over 30 years in the estate business, I see that all the time.
I hope your uncle has a good support structure to help him through this - it really helps.

an extended family member in Pasadena also get inop lung cancer and he died w/n a few months. Twenty-year Pasadena resident -- the San Gabriel Valley is known for its dirty air -- who in recent years had complained to immediate family about his breathing but apparently they didn't take it seriously or didn't make the air quality connection.
Lived a fairly long but difficult life and in recent years had been evolving politically from the GOP to the Dems.
As for the local heat, haven't checked but it feels like the most sustained heat in Aug/Sept in my memory.

And I do believe, if I understand this betting thing he posts, that BTD also lost money on Notre Dame's win over Michigan State.

Of course, since I don't really understand what the plus and minus means with his predictions, I could be totally wrong.

the USC -9 over Stanford for 5 units translates to a $500 bet on USC to beat Stanford by more than 9 points. In a nutshell, it's $500 that is now sitting in a bookie's pocket.

represents $100. Yes? And the spread is the plus or minus number that states how many points the winning team must score over the losers?

What is the difference between a plus and a minus? I had thought that a +5, for example, meant that the winning team had to score at least 5 more points than the losers. So, what would -5 mean?

Also, if USC had won, but by 5 points, then would BTD still have lost how $500?

if your team is -9 it would mean your team has to win by more than 9 points for you to win your bet. +9 would mean the team could lose by no more than 8 and you still win the bet.

Yes, If USC wins that game by 1-2-3-4-5-6-7 or 8 the bet is still lost if you take USC -9

As for the $100, technically the bet could be for any standard figure, but your unit would always be the same amount. $100 is probably the standard unit (although I would yield to kdog's expertise on that part of the question)

Barkely lost center Khalid Holmes, who was his offensive tackle at Mater Dei High School.

Barkley was bull-rushed up the middle where Holmes would have played.

Yeah, that is a good-sounding excuse that really doesn't describe the poor tackling of the USC defense and other problems.

The Buffaloes got absolutely crushed by Fresno State, 65-14. I bet members of the Pac-12 are having second thoughts about letting them into the conference.
