So much to watch tonight: Breaking Bad, Weeds, and a new season of the Great Food Truck Race.

There's also a new BBC in America crime series starting, Copper. It's the network's first original scripted series. It takes place in New York's Five Points after the civil war and features an Irish heavy-handed cop ("He does bad things to bad people") in an era in which the cops were as corrupt as the criminals and there was no such thing as Miranda rights. The series was created by Tom Fontana ("Homicide: Life on the Street") and produced by Barry Levinson. The madam is played by Franka Potente, who starred in "Run Lola Run" (a very strange film that I really liked and have seen a few times.) Anyway, it's getting very good reviews all around.

30 hours in the water. Not close to the halfway mark yet but the gulfstream will speed up that pace considerably.

The full wet suit went back on at sundown. If she gets stung as often tonight as she did last night she may not make it to sunrise. The weather report is good through Tuesday with light seas, so if she makes it through the jellies tonight I don't see her coming up short this time.

for Nyad. That takes immeasurable amounts of stamina and raw courage. Keep us posted, please.
I took a trip to Hawaii with a friend after high school graduation (about a million years ago) and she went off on a surfboard to reach the other side of the island. Of course, she ended up swimming a good portion of the journey. Was followed by man o'war the entire way. Never got clipped, but, mentally, she was very much the worse for wear when we met up in Kapaa a few days later!

IMO, "Homicide: Life on the Streets" is still the best police drama ever broadcast on American television.

I'm also a big fan of Southland, which originally debuted on NBC, before TNT picked the series up upon its cancellation by the peacock network after only one season. It's now about to enter Season No. 5.

The Republican nominee for U.S. Senate in Missouri: victims of "legitimate rape" don't get pregnant because "the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."

He now says that he "misspoke."

The Romney campaign disagrees and clarifies, "A Romney-Ryan administration would not oppose abortion in instances of rape."

I wouldn't be surprised if Todd Akin recovers and wins the Missouri Senate race, but Romney explicitly supporting abortion rights in cases of rape and incest will cause a huge sh*tstorm among social conservatives.

Mars Science Lab had a big weekend.

MSL completes surface test of Chemcam laser on a 3-inch basalt. The resulting plasma is imaged by Chemcam and analyzed by Curiosity's internal spectrometer.

Curiosity's wheel test is underway. If all goes well, MSL will take its test spin tomorrow.

The hi-res descent video is done. It shows Curiosity's descent from heat shield seperation to landing. Notice the scours form near the end of the video and the dust settle out.

MSL has uplinked its image of the summit of Mt Sharp (Aeolis Mons.) In the foreground is the surface gravel bed. Near the middle of the image is the primary science target - the layered sediments of the foothills. Above that is the channel cut flank of Mt. Sharp itself.
