    Calling all Frisco TL'ers... (5.00 / 1) (#3)

Malone Brothers coming your way Friday July 27th...don't sleep on this one!  Talkin' to you Dadler, and you nycstray, Capt. Casey catch a bus or something!

Better N'awlins style groovin' funkin' nasty rock is hard to find, they absolutely killed it on the boat last night...destroyed it, obliterated it.  If licks could sink ships I'd have been swimmin' in the Hudson.

Dave & Tommy got the, as Keith calls it, "ancient art of basket weaving" mastered.  And boy do they have fun doing it...all smiles and laughs and jokes.  A band that looks like they're having more fun than the crowd, though you'd think that impossible.

And their rhythm section...hot dog, super nasty.  Serious thunder.

Coming to Denver too in the fall, Oct. 5th...  MileHi, Jeralyn.  Mark your calendars, you snooze you lose.

Seems Neil Barofsky, the former Inspector General of TARP, has written a book, and in it he describes a meeting at which he, Elizabeth Warren and Tim Giethner were present to discuss HAMP, among other things.

David Dayen - who plays a tangential role - describes:

The important moment in the book for me comes conveniently after Barofsky recounts this FDL News item, one of my HAMP horror stories. Barofsky shows how HAMP's faulty design led to all sorts of problems like this, with trapped borrowers, extended trial payments, no-doc modifications, and eventually unnecessary foreclosures. Barofsky mused that Treasury didn't care about the suffering of borrowers under HAMP, and the issue came up in a meeting with the Treasury Secretary, which was also attended by Elizabeth Warren, then the head of the Congressional Oversight Panel, another TARP watchdog.

Warren asked Geithner repeatedly about HAMP. After several evasions, Geithner said about the banks, "We estimate that they can handle ten million foreclosures, over time... this program will help foam the runway for them."

This is a revelatory moment for Barofsky in the book, and should be for everyone reading. Geithner's concern, first of all, was with how the banks would respond to the program, not how homeowners would respond to it. In fact, homeowners are quite besides the point. Regardless of their situation, they will be one of the 10 million foreclosures, in Geithner's construction. His goal was merely to space out the foreclosures and give the banks time to earn their way back to health, mostly through the other parts of the bailout, that enabled them to earn profits.

It's also important to note that this meeting took place in 2009:

This scene with Warren and Barofsky came in mid-2009, when the program was in its infancy. And it's prospective, not retrospective. It's not that Treasury came up with a justification after the performance of HAMP faltered. It's that it was designed this way.

And people wonder why the housing market and the economy are languishing...

"Ode To Joy" flash mob in Spain. (5.00 / 3) (#9)
by caseyOR on Fri Jul 20, 2012 at 12:11:57 PM EST
We all could probably use a little beauty in our lives this morning. Lord knows, I could. So, here is a video of an orchestra and chorus flash mob that appeared in a public square in Spain and proceeded to perform the beautiful and, in me, tear-inducing Ode to Joy.

If the music doesn't get you, perhaps the children will.

This link is to Shakesville which is where I saw this video today. Thanks to Melissa for posting it.

How sweet of you! Roxy! thanks you big time!

Thankfully, she didn't eat a shoe, but we had a fun day anyway :)

We went to the marina and romped, I should have checked the temp for the day. We got hot, so came home and played in the sprinkler, fine toy for her! And then settled on the porch with her dinner Kong ( roasted chicken/black beans and veggies with mixed wild rice) and in general, had a really nice day (if you don't count my depression on the movie theatre killings . . .)

If you cook for your dog, I am packing up a trailer and coming to CO!  Cricket will be my co-pilot.  I am so glad that Roxy had a great day.  I can picture her playing in a sprinkler.  I need to get another one of those.  Cricket ate the last one months ago.  And I picked up pieces of hose for days.  8-)  I love my moron...err...little beastie!

I am so sorry for all of the troubles in Aurora.  First in as the Waldo Canyon Fire and now this.  It is sad beyond belief.  My heart goes out to the  family and friends of all those affected.

The young sportscaster that was killed was either from here or spent some of her formative years here.  She interned at KABB.  That she missed the Toronto shootings by but a few minutes only to be killed in another one...it just boggles my mind.

but a hose attachment, couldn't think of what to call it, so I said sprinkler? :)

Here's a link to her album.

I should say, I'm in CA not CO. I have a connection to the Batman franchise on the creative end, so the shooting hit me in a couple of ways.

And yes, I do cook for myself with my pets in mind, so they can join me. I also feed raw, along with some commercial food. I think pure human food is far better than commercial whenever possible :) And it's easier to maintain weights, health etc . . . .

Great new line on Romney and his taxes: (none / 0) (#1)

John McCain was good enough to see 23 years of Romney's tax returns when he wanted to be V.P., but now, for the Presidency, he won't even release two full years of returns.
(He didn't release the  2010 form he had to file for having money in foreign banks).

Iowa gov action on juvenile life sentences (none / 0) (#6)
by desmoinesdem on Fri Jul 20, 2012 at 09:15:25 AM EST
Earlier this week, Governor Terry Branstad responded to last month's SCOTUS ruling prohibiting mandatory life w/o parole sentences for people convicted of murder who were under age 18 when the crime was committed. To avoid individual review that might lead to parole for some of the 38 Iowa inmates potentially affected by this ruling, Branstad commuted all of their life w/o parole sentences to life with the possibility of parole ONLY after 60 years in prison have been served. So they will either all die in prison or become eligible for release well into their 70s.

I wonder if there are grounds for any of the inmates to challenge his action. He complied with the letter of the SCOTUS ruling but not with the intent to look at each case individually (circumstances of crime, mitigating factors in life of defendant) when sentencing someone for murder committed as a juvenile.

I'm on my back in the middle of the street.

I can smell the sh-t on the asphalt.

    My palm feels raw as a shredded radish;

The asphalt sh-t is ground into my blood, I think,

& it will give me a disease like Ebola by morning.

I hear the onlookers review my tumble:

    "Ooooohhh!"

    "Damn!!"

    "That boy went DOWN!!!"

    I can't say I disagree & I pop up to my feet

& take a bow like I'm performing for the Queen,

When in reality my audience are the homeless,

The addled & the big blonde lesbian

Who checks ID's outside the door of the pot shop.

Next time I won't try to run across Mission with my bum foot.

Next time I'll park on 9th like I normally do,

Then use the crosswalk in its legally prescribed manner.

But maybe by then the Feds will raid the shop,

Close it up & say no more pot for you losers,

Go get drunk instead, like real Americans.

It reads to me like a poem meditation on the perils of day-to-day life in these our f*cked-up times.

Don't know if that is your take on it, but that is what i get from it.

Cockburn was a longtime columnist for publications such as The Nation, The Village Voice and the Wall Street Journal -- and a former boyfriend of one of my cousins, but that's another story. I had the privilege of getting to know him personally, and he was a fascinating individual and one of our true liberal lions. I'll miss his wit and wisdom. My condolences to Daisy, his daughter.
