I am so over it, and I don't really care, but there is just something about the blind dedication to a cause that fascinates and disgusts me at the same time.  I hate it, yet can't stop peeking.

lives in a retirement community, and has a number of friends who watch nothing but Fox News; she really likes these women, but she says that when the conversation turns to anything remotely connected to politics, she has learned that there simply is no point in trying to counter their Fox-generated talking points.  For one thing, she says, they don't listen, and for another, it just keeps the conversation going and makes her want to throw things...

I guess the good thing is that these women don't go into a rage - maybe because my mother takes the path of least resistance and just waits for the conversation to change - they just will sweetly tell you that, "Oh, Fox News is really the only place to find out what's really going on..."

Mom says, "well, I really have to bite my tongue on that one and whatever follows - it's the only thing that keeps me from just barking out a laugh!"

conversation with a good friend over my vacation. She was just spouting all of the talking points and could not come up with even one example to back it up. She even tried with the ACA until I pointed out it was mandating private insurance.  I wish I could have kept my head better and given her more of the counterpoints, but i just get so riled up and want to call it all stupid, which would not be productive. I did promise her two things 1) Obama is not a Socialist and 2) there are not as many people freeloading on welfare as she has been lead to believe. She basically said she hoped I was right, but did not sound convinced.

I did make more headway with arguments against the banking power elite. Maybe cuz there is some common cause with the original Tea Party ideas before they got bought by Dick Armey.

It really upsets me to argue with friends about politics. I guess I don't like to disagree about so much with people I love. I never bring up the topic, but I won't sit quietly when they start up.

A recent Treasury Department report of misconduct by a banking regulator is giving watchdogs some ammunition to argue that financial regulators are too cozy with the banks they are tasked with overseeing.

The report, part of a small batch just released by the department's inspector-general, says that a government employee in Florida who served as a bank examiner accepted "gratuities (golf fees and/or food) on at least four occasions" from a bank he was reviewing. The report, conducted in 2010, called the situation a "conflict of interest" for the employee, who worked at the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency.

In one case, an employee was found to have used his work computer to solicit prostitutes via the online classified site Craigslist and arrange trysts on three occasions. In another, an employee was found to have emailed internal information about Treasury contracting to her husband, who worked for a contractor. The rest involved disorderly conduct at a stadium; running up a $240 FedEx bill on the government's dime; and banking with a bank that was also regulated by the agency.
