    Saw Magic Mike last night. (5.00 / 1) (#1)
by Angel on Sat Jun 30, 2012 at 10:21:37 AM EST
Had a great time with all the other women swooning over Channing Tatum (mega HOT) and Matthew McConaughey.  I would love to see this move in giant screen 3-D format!  Between Magic Mike and 50 Shades of Grey it's going to be a HOT summer for many.

Best actor? Best screenplay? (none / 0) (#2)

Ha! Not by a long shot. It was just a fun movie (5.00 / 1) (#3)
by Angel on Sat Jun 30, 2012 at 10:53:54 AM EST
with the plot one would expect.  In fact, a little less plot and a lot more action would have worked for me!  It was an entertaining night out with my girlfriends.  I want to have a slumber party and invite other friends to watch it on DVD; being at home we can drink our wine and hoot and holler and act silly and stop the movie and rewind to the 'fun' parts...  LOL

and trying to explain to a couple of my R friends what would happen to SCOTUS if Romney gets elected.  Anyway I just switched over to Tour de France to find out it doesn't start here until noon which is now.  It amazes me that the Obama haters don't see what could happen if that other guy gets in.   Thank God for email so I don't actually have to speak to them. Oh well I can only do what I can do.  :)

"The Opera Show" today is (none / 0) (#5)

"Oh Say Can You Sing," opera singers performing American patriotic songs.

    [I'd rather hear opera.]

If you have an email address for me (none / 0) (#6)

I can send you some very fine singing of a Kazakh song by an American living in Astana.

    Hope you enjoy.
The Kazakhs love singing, and love contests.
That's the origin of this business.
My student put us up on youtube.

Yes, months ago, to see a ballet (none / 0) (#12)

I haven't seen an opera though.
They've put on some of the usual warhorses, but I haven't attended.
I find summer in Astana quite pleasant. It's sunny, the days are long, with a typical daytime high of 85 or so, not very humid---and, this far north, the sunshine is quite pleasant. In the Caribbean, for a paleface like me, midday sun was rather dangerous.  I always felt like I was being microwaved if I went out without being covered.

Anyone seen Dark Shadows? (none / 0) (#8)
by Rupe on Sat Jun 30, 2012 at 12:22:07 PM EST
Love the cast and director but it got panned by the critics.  That said, critics sometimes don't understand "fun" movies, so it could be great.

How about Barnabas Collins' (none / 0) (#10)

on-going dialouge about personally returning a certain character to Beezlebub's very doorstep, or something along those lines. I enjoyed the movie.

I thought Dark Shadows was uneven, but.... (none / 0) (#15)
by EL seattle on Sat Jun 30, 2012 at 12:57:45 PM EST
For me, the movie had more strengths than weaknesses, and some of its best features were really good. A few friends and co-workers (of various cinematic tastes) have also seen Dark Shadows, and no one I've talked to has complained about it.

Personally, I loved the cinematography, which had a great 1970's vibe to it. (The "Nights in White Satin" travel sequence was truely sublime, I thought.) The cast was good, especially Johnny Depp and Chloe Moretz. The movie had some funny scenes, but fortunately it didn't try to be funny all the time.

The computer generated special effects weren't too special (I didn't like 'em, anyhow), but the way Tim Burton included "The Ballad of Dwight Fry" in the movie was inspired. So I'd probably recommend the film, but not at rave review level.

Whether or not the summer months were the best time of the year to release this movie, I'm not so sure.  But as an escape from a sweltering 100 degree afternoon, you could do a lot worse.

    Saw MOONRISE KINGDOM (none / 0) (#16)
by Dadler on Sun Jul 01, 2012 at 07:11:00 AM EST
Woulda walked out if I wasn't with my wife, who isn't the type to leave.  Started out kind of cute and became tedious beyond measure.  Wes Anderson seems tapped out, making the same movie over and over.

Say it ain't so, I love Wes Anderson and the characters/actors he always manages to assemble.  Bill Murray is usually worth the price of admission.

Anderson accounts for 3 of my all time favorite movies.  Life Aquatic was fricken genius.

I even like the Fantastic Mr. Fox animation and I don't like animation.

Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Train, '72. Taibbi is worth a read, and Fear and Loathing worth a re-read every campaign season.  Or if you have not read it, you are in for a treat.
