Talkleft Turns 10 - Appreciation Weekend

Where does the time go? Today is TalkLeft's 10th birthday. Little did I know when I sat at the computer one weekend in June, 2002 to create TalkLeft, that I would blog every day for the next decade.

We've grown quite a bit since our first birthday -- from 1 million page views and 625,000 visitors to 82 million page views and 38 million visitors. The average time spent on TalkLeft for each visit exceeds 4 minutes. I guess there's no turning back now.

If you appreciate our coverage, or just want to buy us a birthday drink, here is the the paypal link. It's very easy (and takes credit cards even if you don't have a paypal account.) Or you can use snail-mail.

donate to TalkLeft

I'd also like to give some special thanks to Big Tent Democrat, who began writing on TalkLeft in 2006. His valuable insights on politics have been a great addition to TalkLeft.

We've worked really hard at keeping you up to date with the latest news on politics, crime, and injustice, tracking down actual court and legislative documents so you can read them yourselves -- and making sure the conversation stays civil by weeding out the blog-cloggers and drive-bys who try to hijack or dominate the discussion or insult our commenters.

It's been a few years since I've asked for donations. Since I really need a new laptop, and there are some improvements I'd like to make to the site, this is a good time. It would also help with the increasing amounts I spend on PACER and other commerical research sites and media fees to obtain the original documents the mainstream media so frequently doesn't provide.

When you find a blog that you check in with frequently, either to see what's new or what they are saying, or because you appreciate their point of view and like the way they express it, or because you enjoy interacting with the blog's community of readers, occasional donations are appropriate to say thanks. They are also very appreciated.

So today, on our 10th birthday, thanks to every one of you who have read a page, posted a comment, given us a news tip, linked to TalkLeft, donated dollars and befriended us. You've made it all worthwhile.

(I will leave this post at the top for a day or two, newer posts will appear below.)

    Happy Birthday.... (5.00 / 4) (#3)
by kdog on Fri Jun 15, 2012 at 10:23:34 AM EST
to the best damn site on the internet, hands down, no question.

Thanks so much for the forum and all the hard work and putting up with me for almost 9 of those years.  I remember when I first found TL by accident, starting reading so much stuff that I was always thinking about...all thats f*cked up about our criminal justice system and our political system and all our systems.

Eternal gratitude Jeralyn, BTD, TChris, Little Rock and all my knucklehead commenting buddies, for real.

I will try to get a little something something together in gratitude and in the post next paycheck.

Paypal is too much like banking, just can't do it, sorry;)

    Amen to that. (none / 0) (#48)

It's truly amazing, to think it's been a full 10 years since the site went live.

I came in about the time the Libby investigation was gaining traction and stayed because the quality of the work here was as good or better than anything the lamestream media puts out.  More to the point, this is also an educational resource of the first order.

    Many, many happy returns!

Speaking only for myself, getting to know you, getting the benefit of your knowledge, insight, analysis and sense of humor, has made a positive difference in my life.

Making a wish that you will celebrate many more birthdays, in good health, with joy, and with the love of, and in the company of, family and good friends.

    Cheers!

This site has been a beacon of sanity in an otherwise insane political world. And I do so appreciate your efforts to keep the dialogue civil at all times.

It has not just been the illuminating legal, political and sports commentary that keeps me here. I have also developed several internet friendships with people here, people I would not have met were it not for TL. So, thanks for letting me get to know Jeff and kdog and Zorba and Anne and ruffian (go, Cubs?) and oculus and nycstray and Dadler and MT (and the whole MT family) and Towanda and so many more.

And, finally, it was here at TL that the pirate crew was formed, and no captain could ask for a finer crew. AAARGH!

    Happy Birthday, TL (5.00 / 1) (#32)

I've only been a member for a couple of years, and I have to agree with most of the accolades coming your way today. There is some sort of "magic" going on here that sets it apart from most other sites. No matter how many times I may get frustrated, and sign off swearing, "that's it, I'm not coming back," next day, like clockwork, TL is my first read.

So, there's a gift coming your way, but I'm subtracting 10 cents for every time my posts have been deleted. (and, believe me, that's a lot of cents.)

And, don't be confused by the multiple donations made out in the amounts of $9.99 ea. I want to stay mad at you, and don't want anyone to know how much I enjoy it here:)

    Jeralyn, BTD, et al.,

This is my 325th comment since joining, or at least commenting first, in 2008. I'm pretty sure I was aware of the site well before that, I'm not one to "jump in," I like to dip my toe in the water first. 325 is a ridiculously low number, there are Internet and Blog denizens who do that for breakfast I bet, but it is by far the most comments made by me on any blog, so I must really like the place.

I was reviewing some of my posts and man did the 2008 Primaries irk me. I thought my "I'll put Bork on the Court myself" hyperbole is kinda funny although I rarely laughed at the time. I'm surprised I wasn't bounced out of here for that. :) But let's not relitigate that nightmare, I just make note of it for fun, let's keep this thread really positive.

I hope you have another 10 years and thanks for providing me a home!

    Jackson

I have over 300 comments this year, so far.  I had no idea.  I've been actively following since the CrimeLinx days.  I first learned what the internet was, and how it could help me be a better lawyer, from an educational program Jeralyn gave for NACDL in about 1997. Thanks for letting me participate, Jeralyn.  This site is a splendid resource and a real public service.

...smart to say to that, but I will bit my tongue in the name of celebration.

Happy Bday Talk Left, and if I was born on the 29th of April, we'd be the same age.

I can't remember when I joined, but I remember where I was sitting at work and it was right around the 2002/2003, but I think I had a different handle.  There was a good 2 year period where I completely stopped reading anything political because GWB was driving me insane.

I would love to read Jerayln's first post sometime.

... that although I disagree sometimes, it really has been an eye opener and a pleasure.  A lot of my views about many topics beyond criminal justice have been shaped and molded because of this site and all of the awesome folks who contribute.

There are plenty of sites in which the same views are expressed, but none that have this almost homey feeling with such amazing diversity that allows me expand my mind far beyond the physical confines of my body.

Thanks for creating a place for like minds to hang and discuss some pretty freaken important and occasionally really dumb topics.  Never a dull moment, and it's pretty damn rare if I don't learn something when cruising TL.

    Cheers Jeralyn.

    Happy 10th from Hue, Vietnam! (none / 0) (#23)

I remember when I turned 10, and my grandparents gave me a brand-new Schwinn Stingray bicycle (in my favorite color, blue) -- which, of course, all the cool kids in SoCal rode at the time. I had arrived.

And here's to another successful ten years, during which we might be gushing about our new grandchildren, and our own plans to shamelessly indulge them.

It's been mostly cloudy the last few days, and a very muggy 90 to 95 degrees (which I'm estimating, based on the Celsius temperature). They're expecting thunderstorms later tonight, but we've been pretty lucky thus far in not getting caught in downpours.

Hue is an absolutely fascinating and beautiful place, as befitting Vietnam's former royal capital, and the old city almost rivals Cambodia's Angkor Wat. Looking at it today, one would never know that 44 years ago, U.S. and North Vietnamese troops were slugging it out on the ground here.

I'm tired (it's 1:55 a.m. Saturday here) and I'll have to catch up with you all later. Aloha.
