Sunday Night Open Thread

Amazing Race is in India tonight. I haven't watched this season before tonight. I'm glad to see that Brendon and Rachel from Big Brother are still competing. One of competing pairs are Border Patrol Agents. I hope they go home before Brendon and Rachel. Has anyone been watching?

This is an open thread, all topics welcome.

    Clarification on commenting rules (5.00 / 4) (#3)
by shoephone on Sun Apr 29, 2012 at 10:01:53 PM EST
I would like a clarification on the commenting rules. A whole slew of new commenters have registered on the site in recent days, and more than one of the rules appears to have been violated, numerous times. In particular, I'm wondering if the following rule still is still in effect:

New commenters, i.e, those registered for 30 days or less, may not post more than 10 comments in a 24 hour period
    .

By my estimation, that one has been violated egregiously, and I'd like to know why repeated violations have been allowed to stand, and new commenters have not been limited to 10 comments in a 24-hour period, and why they have not been admonished for "chattering."

    the comment rules (5.00 / 1) (#5)
by Jeralyn on Sun Apr 29, 2012 at 11:17:02 PM EST
To be a "chatterer" there are two elements". The Comment Rules:

TalkLeft will limit commenters to four comments a day if, in its sole discretion, the commenter is a "chatterer," loosely defined as one who both holds opposing views from those expressed by TalkLeft and:

Those who are commenting in support of the position of the defense, in this case, George Zimmerman do not "hold opposing views from those expressed by TalkLeft." Therefore they are not chatterers and the four comment per day thread does not apply to them.

As to the 10 comment day rule for new commenters, you are correct the rule states:

New commenters, i.e, those registered for 30 days or less, may not post more than 10 comments in a 24 hour period.

However, multiple "old" commenters here attacked or criticized the new commenters. Given the number of comments attacking their position, it didn't seem fair to limit their ability to reply to each attack and defend their position.  Otherwise, their view would be drowned out by the those who hold the opposing view. I'm not about to let anti-defense views overtake this site. It would defeat the reason for its existence.

And, you miss the far more important rule:

Name-calling, personal attacks and insults, racist comments or use of profanity by any commenter, whether they are by persons who agree or disagree with the views expressed by TalkLeft will not be tolerated and will result in the deletion of the comment and the banning of the commenter's ISP address, without notice.

The new commenters whose comments I've seen did not respond in kind even when "old commenters" here mocked their position, attacked their intelligence, politics, motives and  more. They responded with substance defending their position. If 20 people attack them, it's unfair to limit their ability to reply.

If there is an objectionable comment, it should be reported to me. I don't spend 24/7 monitoring comments, I check the ones on my threads when I have time, mostly at night.

I also addressed your question here.

When a comment attacking the character of Trayvon Martin has been pointed out to me I have deleted it and warned it will not be tolerated. You can see all my comments here.

I'm sorry to say, I find it wanting. I believe the new exceptions to the rules show a double standard being applied here now, precipated by the emotionalism of the Zimmerman case.

I may still log in to read posts, but as far as me commenting in the future, I bid you all "adieu."

IMO, the double standard has been pretty jarring.  In my case, I got a lengthy lecture about "tone" and TL chattering rules while the slew of new drive-by posters attracted to this subject have been mostly allowed to run rampant and not just post the same pro-defense/Zimmerman arguments that Jeralyn is alluding to over and over again but also to engage in rank speculation and make covert and overt racialist arguments.

To be fair, it's been hot and heavy so by the time Jeralyn gets to it, the horse is out of the barn but this has happened in enough threads on this subject to be a pattern.

take a break, let the Zimmermess die down....I consider you a valued commenter and would hate to lose ya.

I find the Zimmerman fan club disheartening, if only all accused got such benefit of the doubt! ;)But at the end of the day we're all just knuckleheads commenting on a blog, it ain't worth getting upset over, we're not changing the world we're entertaining ourselves in our nerdy little way.

I am a new commenter and have been following the commenting rules. But I have been put off by some people's appeals to the rules only because they disagree with the points that a new commenter has been making. That kind of behavior is intellectually irresponsible. It also puts the complainers in an unflattering light by making them look like tattletales.

Brendon and Rachel are growing on me. But I don't think anyone is going to beat Dave and the other Rachel unless a stroke of really bad luck befalls them.

The border patrol agents can be jerky sometimes but they did a really nice thing early on in giving half of their reward money for one leg to the Kentucky team that came in right behind them. One of them is trying to make the extra money for his disabled child.

None of the teams this year are super annoying, which is nice, I won't mind whoever wins.
