Grammy Awards Live Blog

The Grammys are live on the East Coast but don't begin here until 7:00 pm, 20 minutes to go. The West Coast doesn't air until an hour after that. I'd say no spoilers, except everything is broadcast all over the internet and Twitter, and being watched on live feeds, so spoilers are fine. If you don't want to know, don't read the comments.

Bruce Springsteen opens with "We Take Care of Our Own." Jennifer Hudson will do a tribute to Whitney Houston. Most of the awards were given out before the show, only 10 awards will be live during tonight's show. Here's the list of nominees with live up-dating of winners. Adele and Taylor Swift and the Foo Fighters were winners this afternoon.

As for the red carpet, the fashion is never as good as it is for the movie awards shows, and always a little bizarre. Here's some that stood out to me below (Photo links will come down at the end of the show, so look now): [More...]

Another odd photo: Cyndi Lauper.

Here's Steven Van Zandt and Bob Seger.

Now onto the show.

Update 7:10 pm: LL Cool J is the best host I've seen on one of these shows in ages. He had a tough job and he sailed right through it with just the right combination of respect and "the show must go on." Really good choice.

Springsteen was fun to watch. I missed Clarence, his absence really stood out to me. And by the way, check out Steven Van Zandt's new original series Lillyhammer, available on Netflix streaming. It's about a New York mobster who goes into the witness protection program after testifying against a Mafia bigwig, and chooses Lillyhammer, Norway as the place he wants to live. There are 8 one hour segments, and instead of making you wait a week to see the next one, you can watch them all at one time if you want. I've already seen 5, and it's really good.

Update 7:23pm: Lady Gaga skipped the red carpet but here she is sitting in the audience with a black netted veil covering her face.

Update 8:20 pm: Here's one of the better and faster red carpet photo galleries.

Is there a show Ryan Seacrest doesn't have a part in hosting? Do the Beach Boys look old or what? What a shocker. I didn't find anything happy in that performance. I just felt bad for them.

Interesting contrast with Paul McCartney, who has to be the same age as the Beach Boys, and while he looks his age, seems much younger. His voice was realy good tonight. He seemed filled with life.

Update 8:45 pm: Taylor Swift's face looks prettier than usual tonight. I think it's because it has some color. Great makeup artist. Her hair color looks more natural too. She also has a lot more self- confidence which is good. She used to be so fragile looking. But I wish all her songs didn't sound the same.

Update 9:00pm: Katy Perry mesmerized me. I can see why she earned $44 million last year. The pretend technical glitch was really convincing. But it was the angry lyrics to her new song "Part of Me" and the negative emotion with which she belted them out that had me transfixed. Russell Brand must be cringing. I know nothing about their marriage or split, and I've never seen his appeal, but this was like burning him at the stake without a trial.

The star of the night is definitely Adele. I'm not quite getting all the adulation. It's a good song, she sings it well and she's back after having surgery on her vocal cords which I'm glad for her went well. She just doesn't have personal magnetism or that "star quality" to me.

Update 9:21pm: Glenn Campbell, 75, singing Rhinestone Cowboy, simply amazing considering his Alzheimer's. What a trooper. Check out this Daily Mail article about his farewell tour. And this interview with CNN this week.

I could have done without the pitch for copyright protection from the Recording Academy official. At least there were no cheers. On another business note, the cost of a Grammy ad this year: $800,000.

Here's Jennifer Hudson's great performance of "I Will Always Love You" in her tribute to Whitney Houston:

    Best Americana Album
    "Emotional Jukebox" - Linda Chorney
"Pull Up Some Dust And Sit Down" - Ry Cooder
    "Hard Bargain" - Emmylou Harris
WINNER "Ramble At The Ryman" - Levon Helm
    "Blessed" - Lucinda Williams

Good for the Civil Wars for picking a couple of awards--well deserved, IMO.  I think The Whole Love was a better album than Wasting Light though.  Besides, the Foos got enough trophies today.

Cool J is cool. Many bad singers, one or two good ones. Like Chris Brown's piece. Bruno's Chuck Berry act is not Chuck, but still energetic. A lot of overweight artists; clearly not Hollywood.

With JLo?  Hmmm.  No.  The animated Chipotle one with Willie was cool though.

OK, I'll admit it, the Foos do put on one heck of a live show.  I love watching Taylor play drums.  Reminds me of me once upon a time.  They've come along way from the de facto Sunny Day Real Estate days.

    Butch Vig looks good.

I've always liked the Foo Fighters, especially Taylor. I met him in an elevator in Nashville  when they were playing Riverfront in 1998 -- he was very cute and made conversation the whole time. And modest -- he told me he was there to play music but never mentioned the Foo Fighters. I figured it out before we hit the ground floor though. He also had the cutest red sneakers.

    They were really good tonight.

That was right after he joined the band.  The Colour and the Shape tour.  It might not have sunk in that he was a Foo Fighter yet.

That's quite a set list!  Everlong is one of my favorites.

Dave's the same way.  You won't meet a more down to earth rock legend.  We have a mutual friend out in Seattle, so I've had the pleasure of hanging out with him backstage a time or two.  A room full of drummers--you can't even imagine.

    Have you seen this?

lots of the Grammys to go. Taylor Swift just performed yet another ode to a bad boyfriend.  For someone so young, she certainly seems to have had more than her share of crappy boyfriends. Will her career end if she finds a good boyfriend?

I liked Paul McCartney's song. Sounds like he is a happy man.

How many of the original Beach Boys were there tonight? They do look old and tired. Still, my feet started tapping at the opening chords. After all these, well, decades, I still know all the words to all the Beach Boys songs.

"Original" is tough to define (none / 0) (#14)

But I think up on stage from various early lineups were Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, David Marks, and Bruce Johnston.  At least they were announced members of the 2012 Reunion Tour.  Wilson, Jardine, and Love were original members of the predecessor band The Pendletones (with brothers Carl and Dennis, both now deceased).  Marks, a good friend of Carl's and neighbor of the family, was not quite "original" but played guitar on the first album when he was just 14.

They looked old, but this is their 50th anniversary tour, for crying out loud!  They sounded great, I thought.

Sir Paul, on the other hand, I did not find to be in great voice last night.  Good, but not great.  There were times when I thought he sounded a little raspy.

Besides her music, I think probably it's her attitude that appeals to a lot of her fans. At least that's what I hear from fans that I know (which are mainly women).

did a musical tribute to Etta James fairly early on in the show - and it was a great performance.

Here's a link to it: A Sunday Kind of Love.

Recording Academy (which I got via the Hollywood Reporter), it felt that the musical tribute to Etta and the "attention" by Questlove to Cornelius was sufficient, but judging by the reaction, it seems the Academy blundered.

    That's a weird explanation given that (5.00 / 1) (#19)
by caseyOR on Mon Feb 13, 2012 at 11:40:05 AM EST
Whitney Houston received all kinds of "attention" during the show and was, also, featured during the In Memorium part.

and this is the best CYA/spin they've been able to come up with.

And it's not very good - especially considering that someone went to the effort of including Whitney in the tribute, having LL Cool J lead the audience in a prayer, having Jennifer Hudson sing "I Will Always Love You," - and there were countless mentions and references to her throughout the show - which seemed altogether appropriate.  But while I think the Keyes/Raitt duet was well-done, it could not possibly have taken any effort at all to include photos of both Etta and Don Cornelius, two people who, in their own way, made valuable contributions to the music world.

Really stupid move in my opinion.

Went to the NW African American Museum last weekend (one of my favorite places in Seattle) and in the big room in the back they had a TV screen with a running loop of episodes of "Soul Train" going. After looking at the other exhibits, I just sat in the chair in front of the TV for about an hour and had the best time grooving to that! Brought back so many memories of watching it as a kid on Saturdays.
