Wealthy Young Couple in NYC Busted for Bomb-Making Devices

In New York City this weekend:

Morgan Gliedman, 27, and her 31-year-old boyfriend, Aaron Greene, were arrested on weapons-possession charges Saturday after officers with a search warrant discovered a plastic container with 7 grams of HMTD, a highly explosive white powder used in bomb making, police and prosecutors said.

Also found in the living room were numerous written items containing instructions on the manufacture of explosive materials and bombs, including a collection of pages that had a cover page entitled "The Terrorist Encyclopedia," court papers said.

Greene was ordered held without bond. Ms. Gliedman is 9 months pregnant and will have a court appearance today. Police got the search warrant because she was being investigated for credit card theft. She grew up on Park Avenue, attended Dalton, and her father, a doctor, is the director of radiation oncology at Beth Israel Hospital, Brooklyn Division. Her boyfriend, Aaron Greene, is a Harvard graduate and attended graduate school at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. He is an Occupy Wall St. activist. [Correction: This was falsely reported by the New York Post.][More...]

Greene has had five prior law enforcement encounters in which he was charged with assault, and weapons possession.

In addition to the HDMT, which prompted police to evacuate nearby buildings,

Police also found a flare launcher, which is a commercial replica of a grenade launcher; a modified 12 gauge Mossberg 500 shotgun; ammo; and nine high-capacity rifle magazines, the sources said.

Cops also allegedly uncovered papers about creating homemade booby traps, improvised submachine guns, and various handwritten notebooks containing chemical formulas.

Somehow, I am having flashbacks to some of the stuff that went on during the anti-Vietnam War protests.  I am particularly remembering the Greenwich Village explosion in 1970.
A terrible, awful time.  I was active in the anti-Vietnam War protests, but I was appalled at the more radical elements that favored violent protests.  I firmly and absolutely believe in peaceful protests, and violence is never the answer.  (Thank you, Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr., for showing us the way to non-violent protests.)
OTOH, I really don't know what to make of this.  The two are not guilty until found so in a court of law, obviously.  But what the he!! were they planning on doing with this stuff??  Gandhi and King must be rolling over in their graves.

Not that I remember that time, just know the history and the things my Uncle told me about the desperation of the people.  Saddens me that an Occupy label has been slapped on this, isn't our government asking for the 60's all over again pushing regular citizens to the brink though.  And instead of hearing the people and caring for the people they go jackboot, some people will match that bet.

Given the history of domestic terrorism arrests in this country recently, my guess would be that a police or an FBI "Informant" helped them put all this sh%$ together.

    Yes, I was thinking (none / 0) (#6)

an FBI/other law enforcement "informant," too.  Whether the informant, if such exists, was involved in suggesting or making the plans to procure such materials, or even facilitating the procurement of such materials, we may never know.

before the couple blew themselves up, or worse, blew up others. Zorba, you can also thank the women's movement for teaching us about nonviolent protest. In the 1800s, when significant collective action began, women employed many nonviolent tactics that would be used in later movements.

According to ABC,  Ms. Gliedman gave birth to a baby girl today, who has been named Melanie.

Also, according to the article, the police were tipped off by some acquaintances of the terrible twosome.

And, shockingly, the two are said to have drug problems. Oughta make drugs illegal too.

    Or, possibly named Melody,depending on (none / 0) (#9)
