Last time we checked in with Meg Whitman, fresh off the $170 million debacle that was her 2010 California gubernatorial campaign, she had somehow managed to stumble into Palo Alto and plop her big butt in the CEO's chair at Hewlett-Packard. So, how's our eMeg doing these days?

    Time Magazine | November 30, 2012
Who's to Blame for Hewlett-Packard's Multi-Billion Dollar Autonomy Debacle? - "The fallout from Hewlett-Packard's purchase of software company Autonomy, which has turned into a multi-billion dollar debacle, keeps getting worse. Last week, after a several-months-long investigation, H.P. announced an $8.8 billion write-down related to allegedly fraudulent accounting at Autonomy, which it purchased last year for more than $11 billion. H.P. said it had referred the matter to criminal and regulatory authorities in the U.S. and in Britain, where Autonomy was founded. The scandal has led to a bitter war of words between H.P. executives, including CEO Meg Whitman, and Autonomy founder Mike Lynch, who has demanded details of H.P.'s investigation. H.P. has responded by telling Lynch that it will see him in court.

"Earlier this week, H.P. was slapped with a shareholder lawsuit in federal court in San Jose, California, which named Whitman, H.P.'s board of directors, and auditing firms Deloitte and KPMG as defendants. The lawsuit alleges that H.P. and its accountants were negligent in missing red flags related to the Autonomy purchase. The lawsuit, which is likely the first of many related to the scandal, charges that H.P.'s failure to perform adequate due diligence caused the company to significantly overpay for Autonomy, resulting in billions of dollars of damages to the company and its shareholders."

Speaking as an H-P shareholder, I always thought that it was a really dumb idea to bring Ms. Whitman on board last year in the first place. I'm all for dumping her now, along with a good chunk of HP's Board of Directors for good measure. As it stands, her days at H-P are probably numbered.

Despite her late campaign's many claims about her tenure as eBay's CEO, it's long been my contention that founder and chairman Pierre Omidyar was the driving force behind that company's success, and that Ms. Whitman was merely at the right place at the right time and went along for the ride. And while she did her best to drive up eBay's stock price (and thus her own options), she did so by making a lot of its customers unhappy with the changes she wrought, and nobody lamented her departure when she cashed out.

In obvious retrospect, California voters were absolutely right to turn aside Meg Whitman's self-financed bid to become that state's governor two years ago, opting instead to give a well-seasoned Jerry Brown another opportunity to wear the big sombrero. To paraphrase Annie Lennox of the Eurhythmics, "Baby, you're just overblown!"

    Aloha.

One thing you might wast to consider is that when confronted by differing opinions it's far too easy to take refuge in attacks and insults. It's much harder to actually have a dialogue.

Insults don't make for great persuasive technique.

Your intent was to denigrate Whitman, and the easiest way to do that to a woman is to make a fat comment.

You could have left the big butt remark out and your comment would have been, actually, much stronger. As you have seen, your gratuitous insult is the thing that caught attention rather than your justifiably irate remarks about her corporate leadership.

Off the subject of Whitman's butt, I hold the board of directors mostly responsible for this debacle.  They made the decision to hire Whitman. They knew, or should have known, her weaknesses as a CEO, and they hired her anyway.

Personally, I'd like to think that you should have better things to do with your time, than to huff and puff with a manufactured and self-righteous indignation over two words taken deliberately out of context from a multi-paragraph post, in what looks to be a ham-handed attempt to change the subject.

But hey, you go right ahead and imagine me bursting in on WeightWatchers meetings while dressed up like Captain Ahab, waving a harpoon waving wildly in one hand and yelling "Thar she blows!" at the participants, if that's what floats your boat.

I'm going to the airport and fly back home. Have a nice rest of the day.

6 different permanent or interim CEO's in the last 8 years. That's never a good sign. The ship Meg took over was taking on water long before she arrived. From my perspective they've been rudderless since about the time Carly Fiorina took the helm.

And it's a shame, for a formerly pretty darned good company.
But then, Bell Labs used to be hugely innovative, with a whole lot of Nobel Prize winners coming out of their labs.
And, for that matter, GE was also reasonably innovative, long before it became mostly a financial services company, with some manufacturing left.
Companies change, and many of them are not necessarily the better for it.

H-P has certainly been adrift on troubled tides since Ms. Fiorina's days at the helm, and to be fair, the Autonomy deal was cooking before Meg Whitman ever took the helm.

Nevertheless, this latest eff-up is the biggest thus far in a long string of memorable eff-ups, and has portended a potentially destabilizing financial crisis that might well push the venerated high tech firm over the edge. H-P stock has plunged 58% in the last week, from $31 per share to $13.

According to a New York Times article posted online a few hours ago, Whitman proceeded to sign off on the purchase of Autonomy once she was on board, even as former H-P acting CEO -- and current CFO -- Catherine Lesjak protested vociferously that this was a really bad deal for both the company and its shareholders.

Fortune magazine has accused Whitman of "passing the buck," rather than taking responsibility for siging off on the mother of all corporate fiascos, which clearly happened on her watch. Forbes is going even farther, and calling for her immediate ouster as H-P CEO.

This one is bad, no doubt about it, and further, there's more than enough blame here to go around. H-P boardmembers also need to be following Whitman out that door.

Okay, I've got to go to the airport now. Talk to you all when I get back home. Aloha.

Romney's people still have not gotten the word  that the 'middle class' includes those making less than 50k.

    Saleton:

So when you brag about winning "every economic group except those with less than $50,000 a year in household income," that doesn't mean you won middle-income voters. It means you don't know what middle-income is. And it means you're dismissing 50 percent of Americans, which makes you 3 percentage points more out of touch than Romney and pretty much kills you in any election where lower-income people show up to vote.

Really caught my eye because the guys over the cube wall this morning were lamenting that only 'poor people'  voted for Obama and of course they don't know what is right for the country.

... still recovering from last year's West-Virginia-Clemson matchup, in which the game failed to sell out for the first time in ages?

Still, I'd like to think that there would be thousands of Kent State fans who'd gladly make the trip to Miami, if the Golden Flashes win tonight and are lucky enough to receive an invitation. ABC / ESPN might not like it, but I bet Miami-area businesses sure would enjoy hosting lots of visiting fans from Ohio.

It's like when Hawaii was invited to the Sugar Bowl in 2007, and the Warriors brought over 25,000 fans to New Orleans along with them. The opportunity to appear in a major bowl game doesn't come around all that often for members of a mid-major conference, and if you're a fan of that lucky mid-major school, you have to take advantage of it when it happens.

    Aloha.

says "prisoners can't start getting credit for time served until they are actually behind bars."

The Iowa Supreme Court ruling said Allensworth has been given credit for the time he spent in jail in Polk County prior to going to the state prison. But the court said the law is clear that time spent in supervised probation should not be figured in with time spent behind bars to calculate the credits used for early release from prison.

I would have never thought otherwise, and rather surprised someone tried to get time on probation considered as jail time.
