GAO Study: US Prisons Capable of Housing Guantanamo Detainees

Sen. Diane Feinstein today released a Nov. 15 study by the GAO on the feasibility of housing Guantanamo detainees in U.S. prisons. The study does not make a recommendation, but it reports that it's feasible. It finds 6 Defense Department prisons and 98 BOP prisons would be able to house them. The full study is here. Wired reports on the study here.

In other Guantanamo news, the ACLU and several other human rights group have sent this letter to President Obama urging him to veto the NDAA if it extends the ban on transferring Guantanamo detainees to the U.S.[More...]

The New York Times on Sunday had an editorial on Sunday calling for Guantanamo to be closed.

The 668 page NDAA bill for 2013 is S. 3254, available here.

Lawfare reports on one restriction missing from the Senate bill:

Oddly, the Senate’s approach seemingly would allow another of the NDAA’s key funding restrictions to lapse: S.3254 pointedly does not update the NDAA prohibition on the use of FY2012 funds to transfer or release Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and other Guantanamo detainees into the United States (NDAA 2012 Section 1027). The House bill, of course, contains a no-transfers-to-the-U.S. restriction for FY2013.

In still more Guantanamo news, the New York Times reports investigators examining the recent Gitmo death of Yemeni Adnan Farhan Abdul Latif, who allegedly died of a drug overdose, are questioning how he got the drugs to overdose.

Do you really want to see a jihadist with a car or small plane crash into a prison with enough explosives to try to create enough chaos to set up an escape?  GITMO is militarized and a plane won't get near it.  Are you going to shoot down every civilian plane which doesn't ID and goes near a federal prison on US territory?
