Local Mexican Restaurant Gets Threats After Declining to Host Romney Campaign Event

Rosa Linda Cafe is a long-standing, family owned, really good Mexican food restaurant in Denver that contributes to the community. Here are the awards it has received.

Now the family is getting death threats. Why? The Romney campaign learned owners Oscar Aguirre and his parents are Mormon. In an attempt to capitalize on this, it asked the restaurant to allow it to hold a campaign event at the restaurant. The restaurant, which says it does not support either party (they are Independents) or hold political events, declined.

"It was presented to us that (Romney) wanted to do a political stump here. (He wanted to) talk about our small business (and) because we share our religious views with the candidate and are Latinos it would be great for him to do a campaign stop," Aguire said. "We did say 'no' because we are not Republicans, nor are we Democrats. We will welcome any sitting President of the United States. But, we did not want to be a campaign stop."

The threats started after Denver's Westword learned of the rejection, and wrote a story. (Skip the comments, you'll want to take a shower afterwards.) [More...]

"One person who called said 'Watch your back. We know where live and we're going after you,' " Aguirre said.

In addition to the death threats, the restaurant has been targeted with numerous people phoning in fake take out orders, and either not showing up or canceling the orders after the food has been prepared. People are also making fake reservations using Open Table which the restaurant has to pay for, regardless of whether the people show up.

"Two people ordered $150 worth of food for lunch to be picked up today. They called later and said, 'Oh, you're the one who doesn't want Romney in your business' and they canceled their orders, even though the food had been prepared," he told 7NEWS.

Rosa Linda has catered events for candidates including Obama. But there's a difference between supplying food and supplying a venue for a campaign stop. The Romney request wasn't about making a dining stop, but a campaign stop, where it intended to capitalize on the Aguirre's religion and cultural heritage. Oscar wrote on their Facebook page:

We did not refuse him service yesterday THAT IS FALSE! as stated in the article when we were contacted by the campaign of Candidate Romney on August 6th, by a former mormon missionary that he would like to bring the candidate here, NOT TO EAT but; it was presented to us that he wanted to do a political stump here. Talk about our small business and how because we share our religious views with the candidate and are Latinos it would be great for him to do a campaign stop.

We Did say NO because we are not Republicans, Nor are we Democrats. We will welcome any sitting President Of the United States. But, We Did not want to be a campaign stopping place....Since this article came out we have been getting hate emails, from people across the country, people sending us death threats and people calling us telling us we are racist... that they hope we go out of business.

All are welcome to join us for family meal! we may not be your cup of tea but we still welcome anybody with open arms.

We DID NOT WANT TO BE A POLITICAL STOP!!

Rosa Linda is concerned this could put them out of business. If that happens, it won't just be the restaurant losing. So will the more than 6,000 needy people who receive free meals from Rosa Linda on Thanksgiving.

Please let the American public know that we are not racist or bigots. We are just a working family wanting to help our community and our country by serving those in need," he said, adding, "Please stop the hate."

Consider them told. If you're in the neighborhood of 33nd and Tejon in Highlands, please stop and eat at Rosa Linda. They have lard-free beans and whole wheat tortillas. They list calorie counts on the items they promote as particularly healthy.

As for Mitt Romney, he didn't go hungry. According to Westword, he got a burrito at Chipotle.

This wasn't about refusing to serve Romney food, but refusing to allow Romney to use the restaurant to stage a campaign event.

Heads-up to those considering registering here to comment with a rant against Rosa Linda or the Aguirres: Don't bother. Hard to get great Mexican food in Maryland.
Mother-in-law Zorba lived in Texas and we visited her frequently; we used to absolutely pig out on great Mexican and Tex-Mex food.

really such a blessing. There is something to be said for a time when haters from out-of-state had to go to the trouble of writing a hate letter, getting a stamp on it and going to the post office to send it off. Spewing hate long distance required so much effort.

Also, long distance calls were expensive. So, not many people would spend the money to call up, place an order and then call to cancel.

In fact, before the internet and 24 hour TV gas-bagging, this would at most have been a Denver and environs story.

Color me nostalgic for those simpler times.

If I lived anywhere close to Denver, I would so be eating lunch tomorrow at Rosa Linda. Probably dinner, too.

I did a search on Rosa Linda to get their menu and saw that Google and Yelp reviews are being flooded by poseurs who are pretending that they ate there and then leaving really nasty comments.  A quick look at the dates and the lack of critical thinking would lead one to conclude the Rosa Linda really, really good business the last few days only to provide poor food and lousy service.

Westword really did a local business dirty on this one.  The vile side of the GOP is out in force.

for example, false order calls could be traced, same with IP addresses on the net. The restaurant website could investigate bogus entries via the IP addys..etc. etc

Because of the threats of violence, surely the police could help tracing them, heh?

wtf is wrong with people...refusing to be a propaganda tool is some kinda sin now?  And what happened to the small-business entrepeneur lovefest?  We love small business, unless you refuse to be a tool...then we will destroy you.

If Romney had any class, he'd pay for all the orders they got stiffed on and make a statement telling his supporters to cool it.  I realize it's not his fault, but the hating is being done in his name...and it would be a great way for him to get some cheap easy positive pr.

    That is a great suggestion: (5.00 / 1) (#7)

The campaign could keep their traps shut and stop feeding their frenzied base fodder.

Like you said, they should be condemning this behavior, but I suspect this is exactly why they released it.  To make future campaign stops decide to bow down to Romney's political ambitions or suffer his base's wrath.

From wet dream campaign stop to fast food, maybe these were the only Hispanics to pass on being exploited by the GOP.  I mean really, Chipotle, it pretty much sums up Mitt, but they couldn't find any other restaurant where you don't stand to order, or that was owned by Corporate America ?
