Snooki Delivers the News

Count me among the fans of Nicole Polizzi, aka Snookie on Jersey Shore. Her personality is infectious, and if if I were in high school with her, I'm sure I'd want us to be friends. She also speaks in Snookiisms, which at times (although not in this newscast) range from hilarious to endearing. A few from her book are here. And she's laughing all the way to the bank.

Take off your age and gender bias lenses, and give her a look and listen:

Will she replace Diane Sawyer one day? Doubtful. But she surely could deliver the news on a channel like MTV.

Are your relatives recently transplanted from NY?  I live here, and apart from some college kids/twenty-somethings that rent houses for the summer to party, she's nothing like the people from the Shore.

BTW - You're right about the cast.  Only one is from near the Jersey shore, the rest are from New York, and I think one is from Rhode Island.

I went to the Jersey shore for the first time this year.  It's a mixed bag.  I certainly saw some people like that, and I certainly saw lots of people who aren't like that.  No idea where anyone is actually from.  But the fact remains that you are more likely to see a Snookie at the Jersey Shore than a lot of other places, regardless of where they are "from".

Also - no idea what a "Bennie" is.

... a tourist at the Jersey Shore ("Shoobies" at the southern shore).

Except that's precisely my point.  You can find plenty of people that fit the Snookie/"Jersey Shore" profile, particularly if you go to one of the towns with a bid boardwalk or lots of clubs (Seaside Heights, Belmar, Pt. Pleasant Beach, etc.) - but they're not actually from the Jersey shore.  On an average summer weekend, the population of these towns swells about ten-fold, and it's the "Bennies" (like the Jersey Shore cast) who are filling the clubs and boardwalks.  It's like flying in 50,000 rednecks from Alabama (no offense, Jeff) to a small town on Cape Cod, making a TV show called "Massachusetts Shore", and saying, "Well, I sure see a lot of people that look like rednecks there, regardless of where they're actually from".

and on the cape, etc... we do have our own version of that, it's a different scene because you don't see a ton of bars/nightclubs or any boardwalks really but there is still a "scene".  We call them M@ssholes, although I'm sure a bunch of them are also from NY :)

But my point I guess is that if you build it they will come, and NJ built it, so they came, and now you have the shore which is it's own scene.

To me it's like people in Las Vegas pointing to all the tourists and saying "they're not ours".  Well you put Las Vegas there, and they became yours.

Sure, by developing the Shore towns, we implicitly agreed to all the benefits and problems that go along with it (including tourists), but I don't think that they "became ours" in the sense of representing either the local people or the community in general.  No more than the people in Disney World are representative of the Orlando community or the locals.

    YMMV.

... on what you're looking for and your expectations.  Cape May/LBI/Point Pleasant Beach/Sea Bright beaches are all very different.  Cape May has more of a "Cape" feel and is very traditional/quaint - full of Victorian houses and no "Jersey Shore" crowd because it's so far from NY.  Long Beach Island has become more developed and has a couple of clubs, but is mostly families.  My town is about halfway down the coast and used to be mostly summer homes and rentals.  Now (past 20 years or so), it's much more of a year-round community.  Very family-oriented, although there are some college/twenty-something rental homes and a couple of small clubs.  Nearby, however, are some towns (Seaside Heights, Belmar, etc.) that attract the younger, "party" crowd - lots of boardwalks, attractions, clubs, crowds - probably similar to Myrtle Beach, without the highrise buildings.  OTOH - there's Spring Lake and Sea Girt with large, single-family homes (very $$$, very quiet).

If you're looking for something like Nantucket or certain areas of the Outer Banks where the houses are spaced far apart or areas are left natural/undeveloped, you might find a small pocket here or there (Sandy Hook, Island Beach State Park), but for the most part, not here in NJ.

I love it here, but I'm a beach person - love swimming in the ocean, running on the beach, digging in the sand with the kids.  But we have friends from DC where we used to live who visit regularly (three families) - all of the kids and wives love it here, and all of the husbands hate it (they don't like the sand, saltwater, sun, summer crowds, or some combination thereof).

To each his own, I guess ...

for answering. It sounds like a fascinating area though I would probably like Cape May from your description as that is something that I have yet to experience. I'm a beach person too but MB is not somewhere that is appealing to me because it has none of the advantages of being near a large city like Isle of Palms is to Charleston and has none of the quaintness of places like St. Simon's Island here in GA.

All else being equal, it's probably the place I would choose, but it's (relatively) remote - 3 hours + to NY, 2 hours to Philly - much longer on summer weekends.

We used to go to some of the more remote places on the Outer Banks when we lived in DC, and that's more my speed.  But if we're just daydreaming about beach destinations, I'd probably choose Dominica or one of the smaller islands off the US or British Virgin Islands - warm, clear water and year-round snorkeling.

I've heard great things about St. Simons, and my wife used to go to Jekyll Island as a kid.  They both sound beautiful, ...

I know plenty of "working class" people - none remotely like the characters on Jersey Shore.  Maybe it's the particular area that they're from?  (Hazlet, Seaside Heights?).  If so, they may be representative of their particular enclave, but no the Jersey Shore in general.  There's a reason only one of the cast members is from the Jersey Shore (actually, close to the Jersey Shore).

by Jeralyn on Fri Sep 02, 2011 at 03:01:34 PM EST
    Via The Hill, 8/20/10:

"When Snooki tweeted that she was mad at Obama for raising taxes on tanning beds, I tweeted back that I would not do that [raise taxes] and that she should wear sunscreen," he told Arizona station KTAR, chuckling.

"That got more coverage -- went more viral -- than anything," he continued. "That same week I gave a speech on human rights in Iran, and everyone just wanted to know about Snooki."

"That right there -- tweeting with Snooki -- that is an American phenomenon," he said.

Snooki last tweeted at McCain on Aug. 12.

"Thanks for having my back!" she said. "I'm going to make you part of my family. Grandpa Snooki for President!

Obama and Snooki: In a quip about the new tax on tanning beds law, Obama said at the White House Correspondent's dinner:

"This next provision (in the health care bill) is called the Jersey Shorah. It reads, `The following individuals shall be excluded from the indoor tanning tax within this bill: Snooki, JWOWW, The Situation and House minority leader John Boehner."

Ditto for all the reality stars.

Although I don't watch them, I have caught a little of each and damn, anyone that can cash in on being themselves, gets mad props from me.

Actors, musicians, all of them are loved for something beyond their personalities.  But here are these people who America loves for just being their goofy selves.

I'm too private for that, but if I was Facebook maniac or Tweeter extraordinaire, I would try and cash in.

I have friends that are so... insanely goofy that I can't help but gravitate to them.  They are fun and keep me from going insane from reality.  I would definitely hang out with any of the reality people off camera, they all seem to be big giant piles of fun.
