AP Publishes NYPD Documents of Spy Unit That Targeted Muslims

The Associated has published two documents proving the existence of the Demographics Unit inside the NYPD. (Background here.) Mayor Bloomberg said the unit didn't exist.

Working with the CIA, the New York Police Department maintained a list of "ancestries of interest" and dispatched undercover officers to monitor Muslim businesses and social groups, according to new documents that offer a rare glimpse inside an intelligence program the NYPD insists doesn't exist.

The documents add new details to an Associated Press investigation that explained how undercover NYPD officers singled out Muslim communities for surveillance and infiltration.

    Briefly looking at the list, pretty much anyone not white is suspect, well looks like Hispanics somehow didn't make the list, but every other brown/black person did.

    Small clips.

    UNIT OBJECTIVES
    • Identify and map ethnic residential concentrations within the Tri-State area.
    • Identify and map ethnic hot spots.
    • Monitor current events and investigations and pulse the identified hot spots as appropriate.

    IDENTIFICATION METHODS
    • Analyze religious institutions locations and congregations.
    • Research privately funded surveys and studies of a variety of ethnic communities.
    • Identify businesses and or employment that is indicative of a specific ethnicity (Pakistani cab drivers)
    • Deploy officers in civilian clothes throughout the ethnic communities

    Egypt
    Turkey  
    Albania
    Bahrain
    India
    Chechnya
    American Black Muslim

    Jesus C, these guys are seriously disturbed, these lists seriously read like a comedy.  I mean really, cab drivers are 'indicative of a specific ethnicity', pulse ethnic hotspots ?  

    This is like Hogan's Heroes exploitative humor of the Germans, but it's real life and we are the bumbling idiots.

    Heads should roll and lots of them.

    (a/k/a Nation of Islam? or do they mean all African-Americans who have embraced Islam?  That's an "ancestry"? And people whose ancestry is from India? Turkey? Seriously? Those are enormous immigrant communities in NYC and throughout the Northeast, and no more likely to harbor terrorist sympathizers than your local Baptist church.

    Would be much easier finding ethnic terrorists if only all those white, christian terrorists didn't keep getting in the way.

    Bloomberg is a politician, and politicians wouldn't lie or deceive, would they? And wouldn't thinking that they would be 'profiling' them? ;-)

    sometimes funny looks pale people get in certain NY neighborhoods...we must be profiled as spooks, CIA or NYPD spooks.  Sucks to be profiled.

    It's scary how big and far-reaching the NYPD has gotten...bigger than the spook apparatus of most countries.  Not safe, not cool.
