My first run in with an airport that has a (5.00 / 1) (#13)
by republicratitarian on Wed Aug 17, 2011 at 03:37:34 PM EST
backscatter xray machine. I flew out of Seattle this last week. I was motioned to the machine and told them I wouldn't go through it. They just sent me on around it without saying a word. I didn't even get felt up. I feel cheated.

    My semi-protest for the year.

Check out this wrestling move by a junior wrestler named Ellis Coleman.  Called the flying squirrel, I've never seen anything like it on the mat. (LINK)

Wish my old party, the Dems, could get their own flying squirrel going again, but that rodent's been dead for years.

    Ahem...Rep. Guiterrez was arrested (5.00 / 4) (#2)

(again) for picketing the White House.  Not many Dems officeholders can say that since the 60s/70s.

When the rest of the sh*t hits the fan, the pirate crew will be ready. We stand with the people, defend the people and, if need be, give shelter and sanctuary to the people. Of course, we may need a bigger boat. :-)

Once we hit the Seven Seas, we may need to seek out a patch of land where we can help those in need establish a new life. Find a place for MT and Josh and the Mr. and Towanda and hers and nycstray and Dadler and family and oculus and zorba and Mr Z and MO Blue and Anne and her own and all the others who will find the new and badly broken USA just too inhospitable.*

The pirate ship will ferry any and all to the new land.

    * all are welcome. if your name isn't on the list, just add it. there's room for you.

by Zorba on Wed Aug 17, 2011 at 07:21:09 PM EST
will bring as many seeds as we can carry so that we can grow our own food.  Not to mention that both of us know how to use shotguns and rifles to hunt, and Mr. Z is an excellent fisherman.  So we'll bring the guns and the fishing equipment, too.  ;-) (Although, I'd like to hit the streets and do a bit of direct protest here before I totally give up on this country.)

bandanna in water before you head out.

Many of us will take to the streets in the hope of not having to leave the country. But, if things go as badly as I fear they will, we must be prepared to get the h*ll out.

We will surely need people with all kinds of skill. Hunting and fishing for sure, as well as the growing of food. Know anyone with brewery and distillery experience?

by Zorba on Wed Aug 17, 2011 at 07:44:55 PM EST
daughter Z can brew good beer, and Mr. Z makes a mighty fine mead, if we can get the honey.  I think that we can figure out how to construct a still and make our own booze, if it comes to that- we'll be bringing some seed potatoes, and at the very least, we should be able to make some vodka out of the potatoes.  If not, we'll have to content ourselves with beer.  And maybe mead.  ;-
PS  Does anyone have access to any grain seeds?  Wheat, barley, rye, etc?  Would be nice to have some grains to make flour for bread (we can grind by hand, if need be) and for the beer.  We need to bring along some yeast, and after awhile, we can make our own sourdough, too.  Plus hops for the beer, of course.  (Yes, I've thought about all of this.  I'm not paranoid, just want to be prepared, if worse comes to worst.)

along with all my various yogurt variety starts :) I'll have a bounty of seeds also. Grain seeds shouldn't be hard to obtain, I actually researched some sources at one point, lol!~ And I do have a grain mill . . .

By the time we shove off, I hope to have some wine making skills, after all, I am living in wine country ;) We should keep a hive for honey/sweetness . . . .

We need a source of milk for the yogurt!  I suggest goats- cows are too big, sheep can be too delicate, but goats are hardy and eat almost anything in the way of plants.  The hive of bees sounds good (and we can make the mead, which is honey wine, out of the honey, too).

forage on practically anything.  And they are cute.  Escape artists, but where are they going to go on an island?  We can make cheese out of the milk, too.  And yogurt cheese (similar to a soft cream cheese, and requiring no rennet) is super simple to make.   ;-)

    Rick Perry - 2010 Texan of the Year (none / 0) (#3)
by jbindc on Wed Aug 17, 2011 at 12:26:45 PM EST
As chosen by The Dallas Morning News.

Supporters and allies laud him as a consistent, dependable conservative. He is fiercely protective of business interests and committed to keeping taxes low in Texas - even if the resulting cutbacks are painful. He has become the face of Republicanism in one of the nation's reddest red states.

Perry's detractors - and there are plenty from both parties - point to the consequences of fiscal austerity, including the state's bottom-of-the-barrel rankings in categories from the rate of children without health insurance to the number of adults without high school diplomas. They say the governor is overly concerned about political fallout and alarmingly unconcerned about developing and pushing through a coherent legislative agenda.

To many, Perry appears ruthless, Nixonian even, as he transparently rewards friends and punishes enemies.

His style raises a stream of ethical red flags. And despite his lengthy tenure, Perry can lay claim to few signature achievements, making him a more accomplished campaigner than leader.

This is a fairly interesting piece, but I'd love to read a quote about someone they actually  liked!  But who knew he was 60 years old??

How I miss Molly Ivins - she would have had a field day with Perry entering the presidential sweepstakes.

Stephen Colbert's super pac treasurer jumped ship to join Perry.

"We're happy for Sal and we are even happier that Governor Parry has sent the clear signal of which super PAC he trusts to receive all that unlimited money waiting to pour in on his behalf. Loud and clear, sir. Unofficially, loud and clear."

I won't link to TMZ, but that is where I saw this tidbit.
