Sunday Open Thread: One Meatball, No Bread

"You gets no bread with your one meatball."

This song has been around at least since the depression. Bing Crosby, the Andrews Sisters and Josh White sang it during WWII. I really like the versions by Baby Jane Dexter and Ann Rabson, but I couldn't find videos of them. Here's the lyrics: [More...]

A little man walked up and down,
He found an eating place in town,
He read the menu through and through,
To see what fifteen cents could do.

One meatball, one meatball,
He could afford but one meatball.

He told the waiter near at hand,
The simple dinner he had planned.
The guests were startled, one and all,
To hear that waiter loudly call, "What,

"One meatball, one meatball?
Hey, this here gent wants one meatball."

The little man felt ill at ease,
Said, "Some bread, sir, if you please."
The waiter hollered down the hall,
"You gets no bread with one meatball."

"One meatball, one meatball.
Well, you gets no bread with one meatball."

The little man felt very bad,
One meatball was all he had,
And in his dreams he hears that call,
"You gets no bread with one meatball."

"One meatball, one meatball.
Well, you gets no bread with one meatball."

This is an open thread, all topics welcome.

is doing fine. Africa has a growing middle class. Astana, kazakhstan is  one of the  fastest growing, most vibrant cities in the world. The West suffeqs from political paralysis more than financial issues.

re the world, isn't that?  And especially for the majority of the populations in so many countries, women?  (Although Kazakhstan is well ahead of others in central Asia in terms of treatment of women, btw, you may want to check out what that means in terms of domestic violence, trafficking, etc.)

it interesting that Africa has a growing middle class. Second, I am trying to psych myself up for my upcoming interview for a very good job in Astana. But thanks for your information. I  just read some links on women's rights in KZ. At least in terms of laws, it sounds like there is  progress.

reliever Mike Adams for two minor league pitchers with good E.R.A. and win/loss records.  Health Bell and Ryan Ludwick are apparently still Padres--for now.

iTunes has a number of recordings of this.  It is interesting the effects of inflation have had.  At one time the one meatball price was $0.15, and these days the extra meatball price at many pasta joints is better than 10 times that.
