21 Dead in New Mumbai Terror Attacks

Update: The death toll is now at 21, with more than 100 injured. Indian authorities say fuel-filled, molotov cocktail type devices were used. Forensic experts on scene say the prime ingredient was ammonium nitrate, with RDX as a booster, and all of the devices contained shrapnel to maximize the damage. As of now, no one has taken credit, and it doesn't sound like they know who is responsible.

Original Post: The death toll now stands at 13 in last nights Mumbai bombings. 54 have been injured. The numbers could rise. Indian authorities believe it was a coordinated attack by terrorists.

Latest details available at NDTV twitter feed. Here's the official statement.

Mumbai police believe the Indian Mujahideen is behind the attacks.

    And I think to myself.... (none / 0) (#1)

    what a wonderful world

Or at least it could be if not for the very very few trying to ruin it for the many.

My heart goes out to the victims and their loved ones, and may they find the strength to seek a path other than vengeance and further bloodshed.

Mayan prophecy looks more on point everyday, hopefully the special lady's interpretation is the correct one, a dawning of a new enlightenment, an evolution of mind and spirit...and not our self-destruction.

I sure hope that your special lady is right.  I'm feeling more and more pessimistic every day, though, as if we're headed toward some type of horrible combination of corporate oligarchy and theocracy.

folks, Mayans and those who've studied oral history of the Mayans, who say the same. We can only hope.

I feel so bad for the residents of Mumbai. I don't have words to express it.

...a consultant who is Indian, Co. based in Mumbai though he lives in NJ, and with family there. His wife/kids (in US) were sched'd to fly to Mumbai in a day or two to start vacation....

He has confirmed his work colleagues were in a different area of the attacks, thankfully.

He is not sure if his wife's flight may be delayed or cancelled.

I am scheduled to fly to Delhi next weekend (as is he)....we assume that those flights may be as scheduled but expect security to be very tight.

Awful, just awful, for the residents and their loved ones.  Terror attacks are just that- absolute terror.  It must be so frightening for that city now, never knowing when or if the next attack may come.  I have never understood this, and I never will.  How does killing a whole bunch of people that you don't even know advance your cause?

    there ya have it.

As for righteous causes that adopt the tactic of terrorism, yep thats the million dollar question Z.

There are righteous causes that can and do arise, pains me to say, that justify violence in self defense or preservation of essential liberty...but the terrorism of random slaughter is never a righteous or justifiable tactic to achieve any ends.

but i remain convinced the only reason the mayan calendar ends on 12-21-2012 is because they ran out of space on that particular block of stone. they fully intended to begin work on a second, holiday edition calendar (to be sent out as an insert with the next year's royal christmas cards, to their loyal customers), and just never got around to it. heck, 12-21-2012 was a lonnnnnnnnnnng ways off, no hurry really.

a good lesson on why you should never put important jobs off.

Actually, it is a near certainty.
