Cr@p.   Whitey bulger was just arrested.  I never thought that would happen.

I got a breaking news email from the Globe about it this evening and could hardly believe it.  I wonder if they sent Seal Team 6 after him.

they have recently been airing a huge media blitz, and apparently that's what nabbed him.

Just shocking.  For those readers who don't know, Whitey was who Jack Nicholson's character in the Departed was based on.  But more importantly, in real life he was a mob leader who doubled as an FBI informant so that his competition was arrested and he allegedly got away with murder - I feel like I have to write allegedly, but as Boston is really just a big small town, everyone "knows" he is a murderer.  He's been on the FBI most wanted list for over a decade.  All the while his brother was president of the state senate, and then went on to run UMass Amherst for a few years - which is the flagship UMass.  They are pretty much icons of what I would consider old-Boston.

    Link to arrest story.

for those who don't know-- Bulger was the chief of the major Irish mobsters, called the Winter Hill Gang, and he happily tattled on the Italian Mafia to the FBI, which then protected him and tipped him off when he was about to be arrested so he could go into hiding.

I watch a lot of trials, I've never heard of a research corporation doing experiments to prove the prosecution case.
Oak Ridge research laboratories has so many expert witness they out number the FBI experts. The defense is calling the FBI experts.
It's so many. I call them "The Oakridge Boys". In and early post I called them the "Buddies".
It's interesting there the only experts who find Chloroform, decomposing 1 hair, smell of death in the car,1 fly and a leg.
I've seen more flies on dead worm.

I saw the piece on how Hamsher isn't a the put upon progressive she pretends to be... while I don't read her site because I feel she's a hack in it for the money and the access... I had to go to the BJ site... YEEHAW!! Cole is (uh? the comment will get deleted if I put it in any way factual) let's just say he has a pile of tissues at his feet!!

I can't express how I enjoy watching the Obama supporting Bush voters castigate another site for milking their readers/commenters.  Aaaahhh, good day on the net.

    Balloon Juice.

The pro-Obama bloggers v. FDL thing doesn't really interest me.  I don't think either side makes that great of an impact on events.  The main issue is that all this energy doesn't have an outlet.  Cole himself isn't capable of much more than saying CALL YOUR CONGRESS(WO)MANNNNNN!!!! on many issues.  And that's hardly the kind of coordinated effort that would make a difference.  Obviously, there are MANY people with a lot more money and a lot more access...calling your Congresscritter alone isn't going to change things.  I don't think either side has some great strategic plan going on, so they're getting overwrought for no reason.

I mean, as ABG likes to say, most Democrats are happy.  And they are.  I don't think yakking on the Internet right now is actually hurting anybody.

Interesting bit of second hand legal (none / 0) (#8)
by observed on Wed Jun 22, 2011 at 04:29:52 PM EST
gossip. A couple nights ago I was talking to a profession (air traffic controller) from Houston.
Somehow the topic of statutory rape came up, and he claimed that lawyer friends of his in Houston said that an older female will never be prosecuted---for example, he knew of a 24 year old teacher who had sex with a 16 year old boy, and the case was killed.

I was wondering what the legal ramifications of such a practice would be, if it were proved---would this affect sentences of males convicted in Houston?

    Just proves that gossip (5.00 / 1) (#11)
by Towanda on Wed Jun 22, 2011 at 05:00:52 PM EST
is garbage, especially third-hand, fourth-hand, etc.  I just googled houston and teacher and student and sex, and several cases came up.

How odd.  Don't professional air traffic controllers know how to google?  Don't you?

Child being tried for murder (none / 0) (#19)
by Kayfay on Wed Jun 22, 2011 at 09:45:41 PM EST
I have worked in the field of legal advocacy for children for many years, This is the saddest, most egregious case of misguided justice I have experienced. A twelve year old child in Jacksonville Fl. is being held as an adult for first degree murder of his two year old brother. He is being held in 23 hour a day solitary confinement. His mother is 25 years old, and gave birth to him when she was twelve. The Judge ordered a gag order so no one is allowed to talk to the press. Anyone want to take this on? The link in your other comment is too long and will likely be deleted (links like that sometimes cause the site to display a little wonky).

I've reposted it here for you.  If you

    1.  Highlight a word or group of words
    2.  Click the "link" button above the comment input box (it's the one that looks like a little chain)
    3.  Paste the link into the box that comes up,
    4.  Click "OK"

    You'll get an embedded link.

Good night all.  I can't even believe I'm up this late again.

Is this an attorney's dream Motion to file? It appears Mark Cuban and the Mavericks had a suit filed against them by a minority partner (Ross Perot Jr) last year that Cuban was, to paraphrase,...running the franchise into the ground.

but I am afraid the powers that be are correct...sanity hasn't a prayer in these United States.

But as you said, at least it starts a conversation...a conversation that should have occurred and been long-settled before I was born, but what are ya gonna do...dems the breaks.
