    Pharma and the FDA working (4.50 / 2) (#10)
by MO Blue on Sat Mar 12, 2011 at 08:27:39 PM EST
to make sure that people are being ripped off on prescription drugs as often as possible.

Next week, the cost of preventing premature childbirth will skyrocket when a drug given to high-risk pregnant women goes from around $10 a dose to $1,500 a dose. The drug, called Makena, which has been made cheaply for years and is given as a weekly shot, could make the total cost during a pregnancy as much as $30,000. Why? Because KV Pharmaceutical of St. Louis recently won FDA approval to exclusively sell Makena last month.

By receiving "orphan drug status," KV's subsidiary Ther-RX Corp. will now be "the sole source of the drug for seven years." In justifying the 14,900 percent price hike, KV Pharmaceuticals says that pregnant women will be willing to pay the new price because if they don't, they could have a premature baby, or "preemie," which could cost much much more: link

Thank god President Obama saved us from having the ability to negotiate prices or reimport cheaper prescription drugs. Another great benefit of the health insurance legislation.

Noting that African-American women have a higher percentage of premature births, and that fewer women will be able to afford the drug, Brown said he is "gravely concerned" that premature birth rates will increase nationwide. "[H]ealth insurance companies could either stop coverage of the treatment or impose higher premiums on consumers," Brown said, adding that "state Medicaid programs -- which are already struggling to make ends meet -- will be forced to deal with the financial repercussions" of the "exorbitant" hike.

    I'll excerpt a Novel Prize winner this Saturday (none / 0) (#1)

The final line of J.M. Coetzee's Booker Prize winning novel, THE LIFE AND TIMES OF MICHAEL K, as powerful a book as you're ever likely to read:

He would clear the rubble from the mouth of the shaft, he would bend the handle of the teaspoon in a loop and tie the string to it, he would lower it down the shaft deep into the earth, and when he brought it up there would be water in the bowl of the spoon; and in that way, he would say, one can live.

Have a great day everyone.  I'm heading for a hike at Muir Woods with my wife and son, to wander and ponder among the giant coastal Redwoods.  Peace, my friends.

speaking of all things Muir, if you get the chance, check out Gary Snyder's The Practice of the Wild. It's the deepest, most spiritually-and-ecologically relevant book I've read in years.

And say hello to "the silent ones" for me. Peace.

Just too crowded for my taste.  Weekend, what could I expect?  Need to make a midweek, mid-day trip. Plus, the longer trail was closed, the one I'd wanted to take.  Something to look forward to.

Jondee, last recommend you gave me was the Henry Miller tailor shop gem, I'll pick up the Snyder and see how it goes down.  Just saw him on a Kerouac bio DVD I've had for years, but hadn't watched. Nothing like seeing that footage of Kerouac on Firing Line.  Bill Buckley is both under-drunk and overmatched.  "The officer said I am arresting you for decay."

San Diego State vs. BYU (none / 0) (#7)
by Dadler on Sat Mar 12, 2011 at 06:20:33 PM EST
On right now on Versus Network, because the Mountain West is run by maroons.  Hey, let's make sure no one EVER sees our marquee players and teams, so what if he's gonna be college player of the year.  Insane.  Aztecs up 4 early, hoping to get a win against their only two losses of the year to this same BYU team.  Because of BYU's odd views on the human survival instinct (which sexuality is as strong a part of as any other), we don't have to deal with Brandon Davies, who gives us fits underneath.

Jimmer Fredette is just sick (none / 0) (#9)
by Dadler on Sat Mar 12, 2011 at 06:44:45 PM EST
Ill beyond repute.  But I have to say, IMO, his crossover dribble is a carry almost all the time. That's how a kid not that quick can get the space needed to get off his jumper.  You know what, though?  I don't begrudge him.  When you work as hard as he has, put in the time and dedication, when you're that phucking GOOD, you're gonna get away with that crossover dribble.

Aztecs by 11 with 2:21 left in the first half.

Yep, and it ultimately caught up to him (none / 0) (#13)

You could tell he was gassed toward the end of the game, even missed TWO free throws in a row.  We have the same problem sometimes with DJ Gay playing 40 minutes too many games in a row, which, thankfully, he has stopped doing the last few.

It'll be interesting to see how far BYU falls in the selection committee's eyes, the lost of Brandon Davies affecting them acutely (3-2 since he was suspended for making whoopee).  My guess is they fell from a number 1 to a number 4 in the last few weeks.  SDSU should be a lock for a 2 seed.

The 3rd time was a charm, eh?

BYU gets rewarded with what could be considered a quasi-home game in Denver.  Of course, SDSU has to go all the way to Tuscon, so I guess the same could be said for them.

k-dog's St. Johns team, on the other hand get to travel all the way here to play Gonzaga.  Come on out dog!

Meanwhile, the home team around here, the Colorado Buffs got totally jobbed by the selection committee!

Guess I'm going to have to root for 14th seed Indiana State as they have the most Iowa connections...
