they are going to get a clue:
    via stinque

At a recent gathering in South Carolina, the site of a crucial early presidential primary next year, party activists said the former Alaska governor didn't have the experience, the knowledge of issues or the ability to get beyond folksy slang and bumper-sticker generalities that they think is needed to win and govern.

    but then

Many are shopping for someone else. They're looking at Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., for example, and seeing what they call a smarter, more experienced candidate who's equally as conservative.
"Sarah Palin with a brain," said Gail Moore, a Republican from Columbia.

I guess if you have never seen a candidate with a functioning brain that could be an understandable mistake.

    House GOP eyes DOMA defense
Legal void left by Obama's move

House Republicans and conservative groups are working together behind the scenes to fill the legal void created Wednesday when the Obama administration announced that it would no longer defend the federal law banning gay marriage.

The House leadership likely will introduce a resolution early next week to intervene in the four lawsuits pending against the Defense of Marriage Act, better known as DOMA, the 1996 federal law that defines marriage as between one man and one woman, conservative leaders say.

"I know there have been discussions. I've been part of the discussions," said Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council. "The question is how to handle this hot potato. The president is trying to throw a monkey wrench into what's been a very unified majority."

actually Tony, I dont think he is trying to.
    I think he did.

"Angered conservatives are vowing to make same-sex marriage a front-burner election issue, nationally and in the states"

"Conservatives also said they would now expect the eventual 2012 GOP presidential nominee to highlight the marriage debate as part of a challenge to Obama, putting the issue on equal footing with the economy."

    Link

Seriously, PLEASE do this.  Getting the next generation to vote for Democrats, one Republican bigot at a time.

Honestly, even for those that oppose same-sex marriage, does anyone think it is on "equal footing with the economy" to them?  I can only think of one group of people where that might be true.  And they aren't the ones voting for Republicans on this issue.

Thunderbolt has some real potential, but Apple should have standard flash storage, higher res screens, and a better (or, ideally, no) optical drive at this point.

This is clearly a holdover until the next revision, which means that I'm probably two revisions away from looking at a new machine--if at all.

(Steve Jobs calls it a "bag of hurt").

And DVD is just basically an unnecessary appendage these days. I have used my drive just once in the last two years: to update the OS. Otherwise, it's taking up space and weight on what's supposed to be a portable machine.

I have DVDs of Disney art sitting here from a client. she popped them off to me because the files are huge (Cars animation) and take forever to DL (and their site is routinely down on weekends when I'm usually crushing out a rush). I use dvds for art BU along with externals (have many of those). My portable drive just crashed and I lost everything on it . . . so would have been nice to have that on dvd (which takes up no room and weighs nothing . . .) i have many years worth of work i still need to access that's backed up on cd/dvd and still keep libraries of things that i don't need stored on my drives (space issues, very recent art files are about 100gigs) daily. i'm actually getting ready to do another back up. once to dvds and another to the external.

Most people I know/work with have both a desktop and mb and they are interchangeable. The only dif is we aren't dragging all our externals around when we're using our mb. Since my portable drive crashed, I'm more likely to carry a backup on dvd of anything i might need off the portable. I can see the drives eventually going away, but like I said, I still think it's too soon. The floppy at least had better replacements when it bit the dust.

Following a stormy month that culminated with wayward star Charlie Sheen attacking his employers in vitriolic public rants Thursday, CBS and Warner Bros. announced that they would cancel the rest of the season of the hit sitcom "Two and a Half Men," casting a pall over the fate of TV's most-watched comedy.

Interviewed on the radio program "The Alex Jones Show," Sheen, who is said to be vacationing in the Bahamas, called his boss, Executive Producer Chuck Lorre, "a clown," and referred to him as "Chaim Levine" (Lorre's birth name is Charles Michael Levine). In a later interview with the website TMZ.com, Sheen said, "I violently hate Chaim Levine," and accused Lorre of taking money from him.

Within hours, the studio and network issued a joint statement: "Based on the totality of Charlie Sheen's statements, conduct and condition, CBS and Warner Bros. Television have decided to discontinue production of 'Two and a Half Men' for the remainder of the season."

    Sarcoptic mange.

In humans in the US, it's called 'scabies.'

In England, they call it 'the red itch.'

I need to go to the vets for a dip. Sigh. But instead I'll have to go to the MD for what will probably be a less-effective and longer-term cure.

The things we put up with for our pets. Saturday is now  "Wash every article of clothing in scalding hot water and set off bug bombs in the house day."

But... Jack and Cookie are fine-- I took Jack for a dip after I brought him home, no evidence of mange, but obviously he was carrying it.

that sucks my man.  I haven't gotten it yet :)  The South does breed itself some mange though.  I had one dog who had a spot of it for months while he was growing up.  Dogs born here seem to have less problems with it than dogs that move here.  If they move here it seems like they almost have to get their immune system to up the ante and then a spot of it will go away.  And of course stress on a dog's immune system will lead to them being covered in mange down here poor things.

Horrible and pretty embarrassing, I actually had no idea what it was for a few months.  When I finally went to the doctor he said, "How could you let this go so long, it must have been torture!"  And it was, and it was.  Several applications of whatever kills them , cleaning the entirely of the house's washable products and a few weeks later, I was scabies free, but not before passing the gift to two of my roommates (and fortunately best friends).   Never did figure out where she got it, relationship ended around the same time for unrelated reasons.

Interesting thing about scabies is that scratching actually kills the bastards, it just rips up your skin of course, and the eggs will just keep hatching more.  So not the greatest idea to itch.  I would sit for hours uncomfortably not itching, assuming it was just some reaction to a new laundry detergent.  Don't like doctors, irrational fear.

Interesting use of solar power (none / 0) (#36)
by Harry Saxon on Fri Feb 25, 2011 at 08:37:39 AM EST

The relentless sun that beats down on the southern San Joaquin Valley may soon help squeeze more oil from its hills.

At an aging oil field in Kern County, startup GlassPoint Solar has built a solar power array that will generate steam to be pumped into the rocks below. The steam's heat and pressure will coax more petroleum out of the rocks.

The oil field's operators, Berry Petroleum Co., already use steam. Many California oil fields, first drilled a century ago, need this kind of "enhanced oil recovery" to keep the crude flowing.

But boiling water into steam burns a lot of natural gas. GlassPoint, based in Fremont, claims its solar arrays can generate steam for less than the cost of using natural gas. That's true even though natural gas prices have tumbled, said GlassPoint Vice President John O'Donnell.

"These are fields that have produced for over 100 years, and they're all, as it happens, in locations that have really good sun," O'Donnell said. "There aren't just resources under your feet, there are resources over your head."

being an American in Libya really sucks right now.  Great Britain pulled up in a warship and loaded her people up.  Other countries quickly sent in C-130s, tossed their people in and got the heck out.  The United States sends a paddle boat :)

Any comments, I though they used to be a propaganda machine, but I see more and more links to legitimate sites.  I'm thinking maybe our propaganda machine had left me with that line of thinking.

Comments, and is it something I should be looking at work, Big Oil in Houston ?

    Talk Left is Tame (5.00 / 1) (#60)

I am filtered, but no more than here than I am anywhere.

I worry about the non-sense my friends send me far more than posting here.  It's why I love Talk Left, the no swearing policy, and for the most part, it's tame comments.  I stopped reading most blogs because no filtering generally means swearing.  I have no idea if there are filters here at work, and with other sites, I felt like I would find out soon with all the pure hateful comments, even if I agreed, it's just something I wouldn't want to be associated with.

Nothing here I would hesitate to own up to.

Side Note, to clarify we support BigOil, from bearings to the actual entire platform rigs.  We don't drill or handle oil.

And kdog, sorry, but no paymasters here.  I am too skilled and too proud to ever work in that mentality.

And just joshing really...ya know, "the left is anti-business" and such rhetoric.

No idea if they're snooping on the cubicle jockeys here...I just stay away from the nsfw, the rest of cyberspace my oyster.  If they were snooping I'm sure I woulda heard something by now:)

I get it both ways, from the right and left.  Trust me kdog, explaining to a winger that I'm not in the'drill baby drill' group, after they find out my company makes those very bits, is a feat I have yet to accomplish with any satisfaction.

Anyways no offense was taken, just felt like I should clarify.

Thanks, I was asking if it was something I can view at work, and I got 100 reason why I should read it.

If my politics aren't clear by now, well, there's no helping any of us.

    Shift on Gay-Marriage Law (none / 0) (#53)
by Capt Howdy on Fri Feb 25, 2011 at 10:35:43 AM EST
    Will Affect Array of Policies

The Obama administration's decision to no longer back the Defense of Marriage Act won't immediately enable married gay couples to receive federal benefits, but is already shaping battles in the courts and in Congress that could affect a range of government policies.

    ---

Meanwhile, actions involving gay couples continued in individual states, which hold the power to grant marriages and have their own laws on the issue. Maryland's Senate on Thursday passed a bill that would legalize same-sex marriage. On Wednesday, Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie, a Democrat, signed a bill legalizing civil unions for same-sex couples beginning next year.

Linda McClain, a family-law professor at Boston University who has followed the gay marriage issue, said Mr. Holder's legal language, citing discrimination against gays and lesbians, signals a major change in federal policy even if the practical effects await court rulings.

"This type of development is moving toward a national policy against sexual orientation discrimination," she said, noting that until recent years the courts had generally accepted a certain amount of discrimination against gays that wasn't allowed against other groups.

While permitting same-sex couples to marry is an issue for the states, gay-rights advocates contend that DOMA prevents couples from receiving certain federal services and rights, including Social Security, tax benefits and the ability to sponsor a foreign spouse for a visa or citizenship. DOMA is "the most glaring example of state-sponsored discrimination against its people," said Evan Wolfson, executive director of Freedom to Marry.

took place 69 yrs ago today, though not really recognized much in the official books.  In fact, until recently, not many people were aware of it outside of the locals who lived through it and passed down the story to family.

But apparently it did happen, and now we'll have to deal with it.
