Happy New Year's Eve morning!

We are now in college bowl season in earnest. I was saved from complete disaster yesterday by a garbage time back door cover by Oklahoma.

Today will be better. The picks: UCLA +3 over Illinois (2 units), Texas A&M -10 over Northwestern (12 units), Vanderbilt -1½ over Cincinnati (2 units), Utah +3 over Ga Tech (2 units), Auburn -3 over Virginia (2 units.)

    Dadler, ever played at Bodog? BTD suggested it to me. I finally played there night before last. I put in two units, played 7 stud hi/lo for 2 hours, and was up 3 units.

    BTD said there were some weaker players there. Now that I feel up to it, I'll continue to exploit them!

    Oh... lost one unit playing PL Omaha hi/lo... sometimes it rolls that way.

    according to a story that Ken Kesey told at the University of Virginia in 1998 about what Allan Ginsburg apparently said on his deathbed to all his friends gathered around him....

    I watched friends die over the last few years, good friends, long powerful good friends. Ginsburg - I didn't really appreciate how much I loved him until he wasn't there. He was a little, kind of effeminate, Jewish something. He was a tremendously powerful man and he was trying to hand on his power. And the story about Ginsburg is when he had died, what his last words were. He had called in all of his friends -- Frelingetty, Gary Snyder, Corso, Peter Olafsky - around his bedside and he motioned Corso to lean close. And Ginsburg said, "Toodiloo (waving)." And there's something proportional about that. There's something right about Ginsburg doing that.

    be right but many of the fear mongering interpreters and new age authors will be wrong:  one age will come to an end but that just means the beginning of a new one. No need to plan any Earth death watch parties for 12/21/12, and no, we won't be seeing a mass landing of aliens on that date either here to annihilate us or save us.

    Unfortunately I don't like the looks of what's in store for us at least at the outset of the coming new age.  Politically, socially, economically, environmentally I think we're heading into a very dark period, the kind of massively negative backdrop which results in tremendous social upheaval, revolution in the streets and wars probably lasting a very long time.

    And even worse, teevee, Hollywood, the Dem Party, and the NCAA will continue to suck.

    That's my cheerful outlook for the New Age on New Year's Eve.

    democracy was a short lived aberration. To  me it looks like we're headed back into the normal feudalistic organization of society.

    And the golden rule.

    Those with the most gold rule. Everyone else lives on crumbs and droppings, or tries to steal enough gold to rule.

    And then there are the few able to see it all as the game it's always been. :-)

    Greatly underestimated today.....But will ultimately occupy the same space in the American Canon as Faulkner and Hemingway.  Maybe even Joyce and Melville.

    I stopped reading him because he is relentlessly nihilistic imo, notwithstanding the views of his academic fans to the contrary,  and strongly believes in entropy and apocalypse imo.....but from a conservative perspective of an original-sin-like moral decay of modern society....fascination with violence....

    But with the advance of women's, gay and civil rights, it usually falls to conservatives to hail the handbasket, as in we're all going to Hell in.

    Just recently was told that if you put a penny on the windowsill on New Year's Eve, you will have good fortune for the coming year...

    I guess we'll see if that's true!

    1.  Romney gets nom fairly easily, sects True Conservative who is politically experienced and who won't upstage or embarrass the nominee (Palin Lesson)

    2.  Obama/Biden narrowly lose in campaign marked by massive negative ads by GOP and carefully coordinated Repub vote suppression; GOP control House and are within one seat of a majority in senate

    3.  Only good news for Dems: Elizabeth Warren wins senate seat

    4.  Economy again turns south in 2012 and GOP still obstructs in Congress

    5.  New year ends with US on verge of massive social and political turmoil

    will pick Rubio for VP to appeal to Latino voters.

    Dems will lose many Senate seats (but Eliz Warren will win -- I agree) and control of Senate

    you're wrong about the senate though that will be a tough situation for Dems given the number of D senators vulnerable, just as I hope I'm wrong about the presidential race.

    Re Rubio he doesn't look quite the clear front runner after the news about when his family arrived in this country, and overall, given he's a special minority within a minority, he probably doesn't have much appeal beyond FL, which with that state's importance still is enough to keep him in the mix of potentials.

    Sen Thune or Gov McDonnell were on my mind.  And they enable Romney to make the youth/lack of experience argument against Obama whereas Rubio, age 40 and with a political experience profile similar to Obama, detracts from it.
