    They lost to the Chiefs. A team that fielded the much vilified QB Kyle Orton. A team whose head coach has already been fired. A team helmed by temporary coach Romeo Crennel.  How did this happen?

    As an aside, for what should be painfully obvious reasons, I will have no comments on the Bears loss to, of all teams, the Seahawks. :-(

    with his injury was a big setback; he doesn't get enough attention (but who does, when there is Tebow?), as after all, Rogers can't both throw and catch the ball.

    But I await more post-mortems as to what happened to the rest of the offense today, with Rodgers' worst record of the season -- although he did top the TD record of that ex-QB we don't talk about, but he sure still tries to be the talk of the town.

    Crennel is getting a lot of credit from the Pack's analysts already for well-directed misdirection.  I want to see more reruns of some of those plays.

    Anyway:  Amazing, isn't it, that the Dolphins' record still stands, after three decades?  Looks like it will stand for a long time to come, too.

    Dolphins of 1972 played only a 14 game schedule and that against only two opponents with a record above .500, 9 of them below .500.  Iow one of the easiest paths to the SB in history.

    No wonder that record has held for this long.

    Actually, the whole NFC East has been completely inconsistent this whole season.  Might be one of those years where the division winner is 8-8 and it's not sorted out until the last game is played.

    in 20 minutes here on West Coast.....

    Great show....Great acting....Claire Danes is riveting as agent consumed by her Ahab-like mania, when she is on her medication, and totally bonkers when she is not.

    I watched the last show twice, and the second time around listened to the substance of what she said rather than the manic cadences.....everything she said made sense and was right....Shows that the impression of being bonkers is solely because of Danes's performance.....Showcases the idea that true genius may be a bit bonkers....

    I do find her riveting, but at the same time I find the character absolutely unbelievable. I don't believe there would ever be such a person at such a level in the CIA.  So while I'm riveted I am saying to myself 'this is total BS'. I don't know how much of it is Danes and how much is the writing.

    And the very end....really bad.

    Damian Lewis rocks, however. Will weigh the pros and cons before deciding to invest any time in Season 2.

    If you don't have an offense capable of putting up 30+ points on anyone, and Brady and his TEs are clicking, it's hopeless.

    It's weird, because the Patriots are a very vulnerable team against certain kinds of teams. Denver is the exact opposite of that kind of team.

    My mom and sister arrive tomorrow on Amtrak's Empire Builder, and we are then driving over to the Oregon Coast for the holidays. So, I must consume the last vestiges of foodstuffs in my fridge.

    In service to that end, tonight's dinner will feature savoy cabbage sautéed with onions and garlic and the last remaining bits of bacon, served over brown basmati rice. Also, there is an open bottle of red wine, from the Languedoc region of France, that I must finish off tonight.

    Hope you have a great holiday. Oregon coast is beautiful. Not as craggy and forsaken as northern California - more beaches and fewer cliffs - but still, a wild, lost, endless feel. Less exotic than the sound further north. Great tide pools at Cannon Beach and a really nice artist community at Manzanita. Hope you have a nice time at the coast! You should have some good (as in, not horrid) weather.

    dry all the way to the coast. I hate the thought of having to put chains on the car somewhere in the Coast Range. And it looks like it will be dry.

    December has been so dry. If this keeps up we will break the record for least amount of rain in December, a record that dates back to the late 1800s.

    The long-range forecast is calling for a very, very wet January-March. And I'm okay with that. Give me dry weather through the end of this year, and it can pour for those three months in 2012. I support a heavy snowpack. I just would prefer that it not mess with my plans. :-)

    I love the Oregon coast. It is so different depending on where you are. In Southern Oregon, Bandon and Gold Beach are nothing like Yachats and Newport on the central coast, which are different from Cannon Beach on the north coast.

    The only way the Eagles can get to the playoffs is if Big Blue loses to the Jets next week and beats the Cowboys the following week - and, of course, if they (Eagles) win their last two games.  They would win the NFC East at 8-8 ... go figure.

    actor in the stage production I just saw was kind of a caricature.  Meryl Streep is excellent so far.  The actor playing Belize is a lot more subtle than the actor in the staged production.

    Tonight on 60 Minutes Morley Safer interviewed Streep. The interview seemed to be part of the PR for Streep's new movie about Margaret Thatcher. They showed clips from the movie. It is quite startling how very much like Thatcher Streep looks in the movie.

    She was completely charming when talking with Safer. She seems like a lovely woman.

    have played disparate roles, but, in my non-expert opinion, most seem to "force" those roles.

    Streep, on the other hand: You hand her a script, and she "becomes" the person she's portraying.

    I will shortly hit the road for a Christmas trip and will be off-line for several days. So, before I go I want to wish everyone here at TL a very happy holiday, be that Chanukkah or Christmas or Kwanzaa or a very personal holiday that you made up for yourself.

    Unlike many sites, TL is, for me at least, like an on-line family. Oh sure, sometimes we squabble. And we have our share of characters (what family doesn't?). Still, as much as is possible in a virtual setting where most of us use fake names, the TL community is caring and kind and supportive. I am so glad I found this place.

     TL is the very best political, criminal defense,sports, cooking and TV critiquing site anywhere on the intertoobz.

    -- by their offense outscoring Denver's.  Pats offense will be tough to stop so long as they continue to spread the wealth around, espec to their tight ends.

    Tough break for the Pack but it might improve their chances to repeat as SB champs.  Carrying an undefeated record for too long seems to be more of a burden than not.  I just wish they'd lost to a team other than the Chefs, whose ownership I've never liked.

    the Bears game last year.  Sometimes watching the Pats every week you lose sight of how good they really are.  Especially when you see the defense struggle, and they lose a few games.  Brady is capable of struggling every once in a while, so you can forget the fact that on an average day he's one of the best.

    Sometimes you (me) get caught up in the hype of another team, since you haven't really seen them play yet.

    In the early years of Pats dominance there was an arrogance associated with being a fan.  That was checked in 2007, and now it's like every time the team is playing well you (me) are just waiting for the axe to fall.  But most of the time, it doesn't fall.  Because they are still really freaking good.

    "pushing"?  If you mean we keep talking about them, sure, but I believe when they are polling likely voters in a republican primary, or raising money, I seriously doubt that is coming from the left.  We aren't the ones supporting these people in the polls, and they do keep getting support.  But if you want to think the rabid right is a vast left wing conspiracy, go for it.  Jim sure is working his little heart out to proove you wrong.

    That was a tremendous leap of logic you made there - bravo!

    Please prove to me where the crazy of the week was not being pushed as "ooh - scary!" in left-wing circles - Rachel Maddow, Huff Po, TPM, Kos,  Digby, even this site etc,. (How many posts and comments have been about scary Sarah Palin!, even after it was long clear [circa November 2008] that her political career was done?)

    Of course, what you missed is the fact that it is not a mutually exclusive proposition that while the crazies on the right were generating interest among their base and pushing the flavor of the week, as always happens in a long primary season with a horse race, so was the left.

    I never said it was a "vast left wing conspiracy", but there's that leap of logic again.  But even you cannot deny that it is in the Democrats' best interest to keep pushing the crazies.  I'm going to go out on a limb here (well, not really, since there already is a history of it) and say there will be many crossover Democrats going to vote in the upcoming primaries.

    And my third paragraph was "predictable", as you put it, well, because it's true.

    They don't trust that he really believes their nutjob policy positions. He has not been able to convince them of that.

    Plus, they have spent 30 years convincing themselves that their filthy rich northeastern and Californian pols are really down home Texan cowboys. Reagan pulled it off by virtue of being a professional actor. Apart from some wardrobe changes, Mitt isn't even trying to act the part.

    and my younger son's team lost in OT to the best team in the league. Until the Giants decide to show up for a freakin' game, that's the only football I'm interested in.

    Turns out he went to my kids' schools (grade and middle school) up until about a year or so ago. He was a year ahead my oldest.

    Can't say I ever met him or his mom, though that would have been pretty interesting in hindsight...
