Last night, I made an "investment" that there would be less than 70 total points scored in the Oklahoma State-Iowa State game. I've been "investing" on Okla State all year but the line was 28 on the road, so I laid off. On my mind was the news earlier in the day that Oklahoma St.'s head woman's basketball coach and his assistant had died in a plane crash. I was thinking if it is on my mind, I imagine it was on the mind of the Okla St. athletes.

Okla. St., who was positioned to play in the BCS championship game if they could beat Oklahoma at the end of the season, lost in 2OT to Iowa State last night. The BCS is yet again in disarray. We need only one more occurrence to make it perfect chaos - LSU losing to Arkansas. Then you would have 3 one loss SEC West teams. There should be a playoff, and the players should be paid with the windfall.

Here are my picks today - Missouri -18 over Texas Tech, Cal +19 over Stanford (3 units), Miami (Fla) -1 over South Florida, Cinn. -3 over Rutgers, Oregon -15 over USC (3 units), Ohio State -7 over Penn State (3 units), Tennessee +1½ over Vandy (2 units), BC +25 over Notre Dame (2 units), Florida State -17 over Virginia (2 units), Texas A&M -31 over Kansas (2 units)

5pm update - forgot the best bet - Oklahoma (-16) over Baylor (10 units). Game is tonight.

last night. They had no chance of winning, according to the experts.Heck, there were folks wondering if ISU could even beat the spread. This isn't a surprise, since from the beginning of the season sports people have been suggesting that if the Big 12 folds, Iowa State belongs in a conference like the Missouri Valley or North Central, because they can't compete against BCS teams.

However, just like they did in earlier games this year against teams they had no chance of beating - teams like Iowa, UConn, and Texas Tech - Coach Rhoad's guys wouldn't give up. Despite many mistakes, in play after play they just kept working until it was all over and they were on top.

Last night's victory also means that the Cyclones are bowl bound for the seventh time since 2000. Not too shabby for a "mediocre" team.

that since they beat the #2 team (even if very overrated) and since they are now at 6-4 with wins over Iowa and UConn they qualify for an upgrade from mediocre. And ISU did show true grit in coming from well behind to beat the Cowboys.

No doubt there was a hot time in Campustown last night.

That win will make my ISU grad brother happy. Hopefully it gives him something else to gloat about besides the Iowa game! Glad for Coach Rhoads too. His Dad was our FB coach in HS and Paul used to hang out on the sidelines on Friday nights.

I wouldn't count that bowl yet--they may be bowl eligible but nothing is certain until those invitations go out. Can't decide how I would feel about rematch of the (real) Corn Bowl.

I would bet your brother is flying high. I don't know much about football outside of Fla and FSU, but I just dont like Oklahoma, dunno why either.

my daughter's boyfriend is asking her to marry him tonight!

They've been together for almost 5 years, been saving madly to buy a house, and marriage was always the plan, but he didn't want to formally ask until he could put a nice ring on her finger.

Well, last week, he won $10,000 in the PowerBall lottery, and while he is setting some of it aside for the house fund, he went out and bought a gorgeous ring, and he will ask her at dinner tonight.

She has no idea, and my husband and I have been struggling mightily to keep the secret.

He's a fine and decent young man, who loves my daughter dearly; they've been living with us for the last 2 years while they've been saving, and I can honestly say that I love my future son-in-law as if he were my own son.

a fairly mediocre ISU team as it exposed them for the overrated team they are and so probably put to bed their championship game hopes. The Cowboys didn't strike me as #2 caliber except for some occasional brilliance from their QB and top receiver Blackmon. I think there are 3 PAC-12 teams which are easily better (Ducks, SoCal and Stanford) along with Boise.

The Ducks can improve their chances for a rematch with LSU with a thumping of SC today though I think that's unlikely unless it rains. The Trojans are much better on defense against the run this year and QB Barkley is more confident and consistent. Could be a great game.

Today on Katarina Witt's msnbc show, Chris, formerly the "thrill up my leg" guy, made a couple of interesting comments about Obama:

Starting with his massively attended inauguration O seemed to consciously want to distance himself from his enthusiastic base, both in the words of the speech and in the tone.
O and Michelle don't seem to enjoy being president and First Lady or life in the White House, certainly not to the extent JFK and his wife and Clinton and Hillary did.

Matthews also repeated a theme he's made before, that O doesn't seem to want to cultivate political contacts -- should- be strong congressional allies rarely or never get phone calls from Obama. Sounds uncomfortably Carteresque and credible.

I'm beginning to be a firm believer in the Psychic Twins (my go-to experts) prediction that O is going to be a one termer.

University Nebraska-Lincoln gets creamed by Michigan. Ohio State loses to PSU. The Hawkeyes finally get a road win against our (conference appointed) most hated rival.

Quite a day--starting off with Coach Corso letting the f-bomb fly on College Game Day.
