Billy Crystal is going to host the Academy Awards. He was my favorite host ever.

Who's going home on the X-Factor? I didn't think Stacy Francis was good last night, poor choice of song but I hope she makes it through. Rachel Crow was terrific as was Astro. I really like Josh Krajek. I also hope Chris Rene stays. And Marcus. I think it's time for Stereo Hogz or Lakoda Rayne to go home. Like last week, the bottom two will do a sing-off and the judges will make the final call.

Does anyone have a Vita-Mix? What do you make in it? I got one yesterday and just set it up and now have no idea what to make with it. It's so much bigger and heavier than I thought it would be.

I'm sure there's other news, so here's an open thread, all topics welcome.

    I don't understand all the people who are now complaining on news threads, saying things like "Oh no! He's too old! Get someone younger, hipper, blah, blah, blah..."

    I don't remember anyone b*tching about Johnny Carson hosting well into his 60's. There was nobody funnier than Johnny. But Billy C. is my second favorite.

    Now, if only the movies being made could catch up in Oscar-worthy quality.

    I expect a cameo appearance.  I would love to see Billy Crystal with Betty White at her dirtiest, and I don't mean muddied from being tackled in football, as she was in one of her funniest ads.

    He was a great host for the Oscars, and we also watched the Tonight Show religiously. Will never forget the ones when Burt Reynolds and Dom Delouise were his guests. Ridiculously, hilariously funny.

    Finally!  I put in a peeled orange, an apple and 1/2 a peeled mango with a cup of ice. It worked and was really delicious.

    The other nice thing is cleaning. You just fill the container half full with water, add a few drops of dishwashing liquid and turn it on for 10 seconds. It blasts it clean.

    is really convincing me that I need one. But every time I see the name "Vita-Mix" my brain turns it into "Vita-Meat-a-Vegemin" and then I see Lucy Ricardo getting drunker, and drunker...

    food diet, but if you are, VitaMix is the blender of choice because it, unlike your average blender, completely pulverizes the cell wall of the veggies which releases the nutrients and that makes it easier for your body to absorb them.

    I kind of yearn for a VitaMix. As others have noted, it is a powerful pulverizer of just about anything. I think it would be so great to make my own nut butters and to not worry about burning out the motor when I toss frozen fruit in the blender for a smoothie.

    As great as the VitaMix is, if you want something to make soup, to blend or cream it, the better tool is an immersion blender. You just stick it in the soup pot. No mess, no fuss and no burns from trying to pour hot soup into the blender. And, just as VitaMix is the primo blender, the primo immersion blender is Bamix, which is, of course, also kind of costly.

    when I ran out of apple juice last week and was determined to cook pork chops which I cook by sauteeing in olive oil and then steaming in apple juice. I had apples, and a cusinart, and tried to make juice but it just came out mushy apples.

    I remembered an infomercial I had seen for Montel William's Healthmaster, where you throw whole vegetables in a machine and push a button and end up with either cold juice or hot soup, whichever you want. But  when I googled it, the reviews were better for Vitamix (sorry Montel). Since I love soup, especially in winter, and wanted to be able to make fresh juice that didn't separate out the pulp which has so many nutrients, I thought the Vitamix would be a good solution. It gets glowing reviews on Amazon, which was offering a $100 discount off the price. I just didn't realize it's commercial size and strength would make it so intimidating looking.  It weighs something like 13 pounds. I'm kind of afraid to turn it on.

    it will pulverize me or my hand or splatter food all over the kitchen cabinets and ceiling. The base is so big it looks like a launch pad. I've been staring at it for two days now, afraid to even plug it in. I'm working up my courage though. Maybe over the weekend.

    I'm obviously over-reacting and the comments are very reassuring. (I also noticed on Chopped tonight one of the contestants was using one.)

    Question: It comes with this huge 64 oz. container. They also make a 32 oz container (for $128.00 extra and I'm not about to spend more money on this now.) Some of the recipes say:

    "This recipe can be reduced by half and made in smaller containers."

    Does the "and" mean something bad will happen if I make half the recipe using the larger container? Or that using the smaller container is optional when making half the recipe? I'd like to start with a small batch of something but don't want to have the machine go into cardiac arrest if I run it without filling it up enough.

    is on firmly.  It can spatter if loose.

    I've found it's better to have less than more in it.   Too much bulk doesn't  mix as well despite the high speed.

    To keep it clean use one of those cylindrical dish brushes and swish around with water after use.  It only takes 20 secs but prevents build up on the blades and sides.

    Some veggies like black chard which have thick fiber are more digestible after a vita-mix  -- add your spices in the mix for a more flavourful drink.  Some food people mix sweet fruit with the veggie to make it more palatable. However, I'm of the Vedic tradition for cooking which says veggies should be eaten separately from fruit. I usually semi-cook the veggies before mixing.  One can do totally raw but I read somewhere some cooking of veggies adds nutritional benefits.

    maybe someday.  I think it is a great way though to get some packed nutrition easily into your daily life.  I would get some veges and fruit and turn that thing on.  We do have a juicer, just not of the same caliber.  I went on a juice cleanse with it when I was much younger, just a week of fresh juices.  Then I decided to break the juice cleanse with some ice cream when someone offered it.  Wow was that a bad idea :)

    The Vitamix isn't a juicer, really, so you would have to blend the apples and then strain out the juice (and add back some of the pulp if you want that).  

    BTW, cooking pork chops on apple slices is a tasty alternative to steaming in juice.  Slice the apples thinly in the food processor.

    It's actually good to have the large Vitamix container because you don't have to worry about things like your ingredients errupting all over the place.  Just fill the container no more than half full (to start), or use a recipe.  Put the rubber lid on the container and pulse.  See what happens.

    Are you a Costco member?  Costco does Vitamix demos all the time.

    It makes the creamiest soups.  Hollandaise.  Mayo.  Smoothies.  And the best margaritas.  You  put whole  peeled limes and it's awesome.  

    My husband had a health problem and I needed to increase his calorie intake.  I could make smoothies with protein powder, flax oil, agave sweetener, lots of fresh fruits greens.  I got him back to normal weight in no time.  

    Agave sweetener works really well with the recipes.  

    When I have fruit or veggies that look pathetic, I give them a spin instead of throwing them away.  

    Oh, yes, and summer gazpachos are absolutely amazing.

    It's great.  You can grind to smithereens giant pieces of carrot, half apples, full sized oranges, including seeds, celery, any hard or fiberous vegetable  -- without burning up your blender...the convenience of that ensures that making a concoction is quick.  You can make tasty smoothies that contain all kinds of mystery veggies (raw spinach!) and fruits that you wouldn't think of putting together, but they miraculously taste great.  You can also add things like almonds and oats, flax seeds, greek yogurt, whatever you want to intensify your goodly goo.  If you like peanut butter, just grind up a bunch of nuts in it, add a few more at the end and you have the best crunchy peanut butter you've ever had.

    You can make margaritas and daquiris (virgin ones for me) and the ice is wonderfully crushed without effort.  You can throw daquiri parties without blowing up your blender.

    These are the blenders that smoothee stores and major restaurants use.  They are HEAVY duty.  You may never need to buy another blender (and when you take that into account, the blender gets much less expensive given how puny most blenders are).

    And of course, you can use it for all of the other blender uses you've ever had.

    I think the gimmicks like making soup, salsa or bread in the Vitamix is silly. Other tools are much better for those tasks.  

    That said...I bought and loved my Vitamix for a couple of years....then I decided to get a food processor and left Vitamix behind.  I think I'll go back to the Vitamix once I'm old and all of my teeth have fallen out.... ;-).

    But sometimes when it's hot and I need a frozen treat, or when I feel like having something really bright for breakfast, I'll whirr myself a concoction.  And of course, whenever I need a blender to blend something for a recipe, the Vitamix comes out.

    But yeah if you happen to like smoothees, they are the blender to buy.  You will be amazed at what you can blend in that thing.  I haven't tried rocks (yet), but just about everything else gives up to it without a fight.

    That when needed upcoming legislation is announced, by the time special interest is finished with the Hill and the legislation it has been decimated.  Made me sick listening to her refuse to acknowledge any such thing.  I have not read exactly what Volcker said or thought about what ended up passing as the Volcker rule but when my day slows down I will investigate it tonight.

    Police in Pittsburgh said Friday morning that Jason Aube, a 40-year-old man who was living in his family's foreclosed home, killed his wife, her parents and then himself in a grisly triple-murder suicide.

    Aube reportedly published a suicide note on Facebook, then took his whole family's lives at approximately 4 a.m. His wife was Cynthia Tiburcio-Aube; her parents' names were not released.

    The family reportedly filed for bankruptcy in 2009, owing more than $550,000 on their $240,000 home, which they'd lived in since it was built in 1999.

    I think the judges made the right choice, but it was an all-around embarrassing moment for the show. They don't even seem to know their own rules! L.A. voted for Lakota even though Stereo Hogz did a better performance in his words. Nicole voted for Lakota for GIRL POWER! Huh? I don't fault Paula for being herself, but that was a very strange moment that just made it worse for the Hogz...

    All Paula had to do was say she couldn't choose and  vote for Lakoda making it 2:1 against Stereo Hogz. It then would pass to Simon. If Simon didn't want to choose, he could pick Lakoda to go so it would be tied,  and it would have gone to deadfall and the act getting the lowest number of viewer votes would go home.  Deadfall absolves them of tough choices. I'm surprised they don't discuss the possible scenarios beforehand.

    I also wonder if they really make all 11 acts prepare a song for the sing-off song or if they give a heads up to the bottom 4 or so, telling them to be ready.

    Paula' got the short end with the group category since the show hasn't individualized them at all to the audience like they have the individual performers. And they really couldn't since one group had like 10 members. Maybe now that just Lakoda is left, they'll let viewers get to know them more. The lead singer of the group is good.

    My experience with people who have very specific screennames with gender/racial/sexual preference/etc. information in the name, it's usually a fake.
    ABG seems to be taking it for granted that when we read his name, the first and second words actually apply. In fact, I immediately assume it's a fake, based on my experience at TL, specifically. There was a period here where there was a succession of names such as "BlackPhillyHousewife" (something like that, IIRC), which were probably all names of the same, extremely offensive person.
    Also, as I mentioned before, DK had a spate of fakes during the 2004 and 2008 election seasons.
    As a RULE, anyone who had a caricature profile mentioning hot button gender/race/sexual preference characteristics was more likely to be a fake.

    It just blows my mind that ABG seems to not even consider that we have a natural inclination to think the account is a fake. I consider it a high probability that ABG is actually a fat white slob.
    I don't know, of course, but supposing ABG=FWS, what kind of message is actually being conveyed?
    And btw, the stereotype is written "AngryBlackMAN"
    Changing man to guy is just weird, and makes it less likely that people will see the (dubious) merit of the SN.

    one is the actual historical stereotype of the angry black man, the white-racist caricature applied to Malcolm X, among many others, in an attempt to neutralize him &, by extension, the Black Power movement of his day

    another, more recent one is encapsulated in the first definition offered by Urban Dictionary

    & for the last 3 or 4 years we have had a third stereotype of the angry black man, this one trotted out by "creative class" white male fauxgressives as a cautionary tale of sorts when they find it necessary to make excuses for Barack Obama's center-right policies & floundering presidency

    maybe i missed something, but during the 2008 primaries, i never saw, anywhere, any link between this latter-day "angry black man" stereotype and the P*MAs, despite the anecdotal "evidence" offered by our very own ABG, and this leads me to believe that ABG's account of such a link is idiosyncratic to the point of existing for ABG alone - indeed, the only people who seemed & seem to be fulminating with rage at Hillary Clinton & her supporters were & are "creative class" white male fauxgressives

    i don't know whether ABG belongs to that group, because on the Internet nobody knows that you are or are not a whatever

    in any case, i think it shows great disrespect of Malcolm X and other revolutionary black leaders when this destructive, racist stereotype is invoked in a trivial way, especially when that's done to settle a very personal, years-old, petty political grudge

    About that: I didn't ONCE see the ABM sobriquet applied to an Obama supporter, and I read a LOT of stuff back then. I do remember a lot of sexist insults directed against wild big cats, who were generally assumed to be distaffly equipped.

    I'm suffering some mild symptoms which I think are due to something my ate, but I"m not sure what. My question is about how long it takes for some things to act.
    I was at a catered party last night. I ate some beet and herring salad that was surprisingly good, but my stomach was bothering me quite soon after that. I am sure that this salad, which had mayo, had beeng sitting at room temperature for hours.
    I don't think its possible for the salad to have caused the problem, though, because of the short time interval.
    Could I be wrong?

    Mayo goes bad more quickly than we think. Was this salad kept on ice?  If not, that could be your problem.

    It could be the herring. It could be something else entirely.

    However, if it is food poisoning you will feel the effects no longer than 24 hours after eating the tainted food. And as a rule the sorry after effects show up much sooner than that.

    Maybe it's not food poisoning. You just made a huge life  change. It would not be unusual for you to pick up some kind of bug. Moving across town is stressful. Moving half-way around the world is mega-stressful.

    Drink lots of fluids, take two aspirin and write me in the morning.:- )

    eating the salad. From what I read on the internet  later, that is too quick to get a reaction from the bad mayonaisse.
