Say Hello to The Fearless Campaign

Launching Wednesday: The Fearless Campaign

The Fearless Campaign is an effort launched from the halls of Congress to effectively coordinate fearless members of Congress with the passion of grassroots advocates to transform our country from the inside out. Through the Fearless Campaign we will revolutionize our nation's approach to six issues where special interests have blocked progress for too long: drug policy, education, food policy, immigration, internet freedom and LGBT equality.

The premise:

Being Fearless is never easy. It requires moral courage and a solid grassroots backing. But by connecting advocates at the grassroots level with those in Congress who are standing up for progress, the Fearless Campaign will move our country forward.

Sounds good to me. Who's behind it? Congressman Jared Polis (D-CO). Co-sponsors of tomorrow evening's launch event:[More...]

Camilo Acosta, Aniello Alioto, Charles Barone, Darcy Burner, Steve Fox, Karl Frisch, Brooks Garber, Adam Green, Arshad Hasan, Aaron Houston, Michael Huttner, Brian Komar, Elizabeth Kucinich, Michael Mitchell, Ali Noorani, Bill Piper, Amy Pritchard, Robert Raben, Ali Savino, Babs Siperstein, Heather Smith, Gigi Sohn, Keith Stroup and Stephanie Taylor.

After what I've seen the last two years, it seems very few of our lefty pols are "fearless" about anything. If they have the guts to start fighting for Democratic principles, hooray. But I'm tuckered out from giving my time, energy, and money to those who continue to cave in when it really counts. Sorry to say, they'll have to do it without my help.

every one will be a fight, but particularly drug policy and immigration. They are willing to fight. Look at the list of co-sponsors: Keith Stroup of NORML. And he's just one example.

...we will revolutionize our nation's approach to six issues where special interests have blocked progress for too long: drug policy, education, food policy, immigration, internet freedom and LGBT equality.

No mention of war and peace.

No mention of getting people together to force an end to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. It has been reported that oursoldiers are committing suicide in numbers that outnumber deaths from hostile action. link

It is not only a senseless war, it is an immoral one.
It continues to claim numbers of innocent children, women and men every day.

We are there, as with Vietnam, to save the face of the politicians who put us there.

Lastly, it is costing us over two billion dollars a week.

If there is to be a Fearless Campaign - its immediate goal should be to confront the devastatingly powerful entrenched forces in government and industry that are invested in this enterprise.

Traditionally, confronting the US government over its war policies has been very dangerous to those who do so. It requires a degree of fearlessness that the stated goals of a "Fearless Campaign" do not require.

It is my firm belief that as long as we engage in wars of conquest and occupation, which is the way I view the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, we will have no moral compass. And without a moral compass, the goals of the Fearless Campaign cannot be achieved.

Hard to do much of that (none / 0) (#5)

I don't see a revolution of approach or priorities coming from within the system...our current approach and priorities are just too entrenched....too big for a handful of elected reps and activists to change or even knock slightly off course.

But ya never know unless you try...I applaud those willing to bang their heads against the brick wall of business as usual from the inside, and we could always use a reminder that they ain't all bad up on the hill...I just hope these reps are well stocked with headache remedies.

    I did immediately... (none / 0) (#7)

    think of Pink Floyd.

Fearlessly, the idiot faced the crowd
    Smiling
    Merciless, the magistrate turns 'round
    Frowning
And who's the fool who wears the crown?
And go down in your own way
And every day is the right day
And as you rise above the fear-lines in his brow
    You look down
Hear the sound of the faces in the crowd

We need to get a lot smarter (none / 0) (#8)

I agree that we can't give up. I do think we have to work harder to assure that we don't allow the movement to get high jacked by people that are only concerned with their own self importance.

During the last primary and election cycle, way too many people bought into the smoke and mirror campaign. Questions weren't asked, (or weren't answered) and voting records were ignored. People projected their own impression of what the candidates really stood for. As a result, our super majority and control of the House, as well as  the WH was a joke.

We have to get considerably smarter in our selection.
