Ezra Klein:

Congress is back in session today, and it's got a lot on its agenda. A food safety bill, for instance. The Bush tax cuts. An infrastructure bank. Ratification of the START treaty. But as Brookings' Thomas Mann says in this preview, they're not likely to actually do any of it.

Of all those issues, only one has political resonance - the Obama tax cuts for the middle class. The rest will surely be put over for a lame duck session, if they are passed at all.

Here is the one time where Democrats get to be for tax cuts and can force Republicans to oppose tax cuts. And if nothing happens because the Republicans hold the Obama middle class tax cuts hostage for tax cuts for the wealthy, what happens is the Bush tax cuts lapse as scheduled. If the Democrats and the President can not win this issue, then they should just disband the Democratic Party.

It now becomes clear that this "Obama Tax Cuts" is a concerted, some might even say orchestrated, effort. Has Bloggerlist supplanted Journolist?

But I have no idea why we're talking about the "Bush tax cuts" instead of talking about how Bush's tax cuts are expiring as he intended, and meet the new and improved "Obama tax cuts."

'OBAMA TAX CUTS'

The key is for Obama, and by extension, the Democratic Party, to take full ownership of the tax cuts. Why should the president or Democrats in Congress waste any breath arguing this way or that way about tax cuts that have the name of Obama's predecessor attached to them?

that the only halfway-decent move (back) to the left that we could possibly hope for given the current Democratic leadership in Congress and the White House would be marginally more liberal tax policy. I will say for me this could actually be the moment when even I will feel let down by the suckitude.

Who knows, perhaps President Snowe will save the Democratic party and give the Democrats a pity vote. Maybe she'll break ranks in spite of this:

A spokesman for Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell said Monday that every Senate Republican has pledged to oppose President Barack Obama's tax-cutting plan.

Not that her vote would be needed if the Democratic leadership actually governed on their rhetoric, but experience doesn't make that a safe bet, does it?

craft a lovely stage play where he's shocked-SHOCKED that it couldnt be passed without the wealthy tax cuts...but out of concern for everyone he wont veto. We'll just go back to it later and fix things.
