The Ducks beat the Vols today, 48-13. Wow. Is Oregon that good? Or, is Tennessee that bad?

In the world of NFL offspring, today we saw Nate Montana (son of Joe) playing for the Irish, while the Vols have Matt Simms (son of Phil).

The Ducks should win next week, too, since their opponent is Portland State.

My Beavers go up against Louisville next week. I know nothing about Louisville football. Are they any good?

louisville doesn't look very good. but i'm very worried about katz. the beavers have some special talent, but it's not clear that they have a qb...

and i think the ducks very much are for real. winning that way at tennessee is never easy. the ducks probably have the best overall collection of skill players in the country, so it will all come down to their quarterbacking. so far, so good...

Angle, Buck, Miller, Lee, Paul, Rubio, Toomey, Fiorina, Johnson, McMohan, Portman with hopes of joining DeMint and Coburn in the Senate.
(hey, will O'Donnell and Lamontagne be able to sustain the "surge" :-))

Scary, very scary! It gets even more scary when you consider that these social and economic extremists are nominations for the more "collegial" "House of Lords" (not even the "House of Commons" where extreme demagoguery is more common).

Fun to watch another Republican fishing FDL to come up with dubious talking points in a misguided attempt to sow discord.

And I'll be gloating along with them!  But, frankly, I don't agree with the odds-makers (& BTD) in pickig Notre Dame against Michigan.  I know all about ND's home-field advantage and Michigan's difficulties on the road of late, but I watched both teams last Saturday and Michigan's Denard Robinson looked pretty damn good against Connecticut, while Notre Dame stumbled a couple of times.

But hope I'm wrong as I usually (but not always) am when I disagree with BTD on politics.  Can't speak to his football acumen, 'though.

by caseyOR on Sat Sep 11, 2010 at 04:48:01 PM EST
Notre Dame's starting QB, Dane Crist, was injured during ND's game opening scoring run. Back-up QB Nate Montana (yep, Joe's son) is now running the offense, and it is pretty clear that nobody expected him to be running the show.

Denard Robinson is amazing. He throws, he runs. He probably can kick, too. Having now seen Robinson play, my estimation of Michigan's chances for success has risen considerably.

Of course, the Irish could still pull out a win (I wish), but no breath holding going here.

    Several months ago... (none / 0) (#7)
by Lupin on Sat Sep 11, 2010 at 11:17:21 AM EST
...when discussing the Polanski case here, I noted that the most astonishing thing to me (a French lawyer) was that the Los Angeles DA had not filed a criminal complaint with the French authorities after Polanski left the CA jurisdiction to return home, as opposed to seeking an extradition, which he should have known he could not obtain since France (like most countries) do not extradite its own citizens.

This month, we have a much worse case that illustrates how things ought to have been done.

Frenchman Jean-Claude Chamoux was arrested in Thailand in August 2005 after being accused of raping an eight-year-old girl.

He was later released on bail but managed to leave Thailand in October 2005 and return to France.

The Thai police notified the French police who arrested Chamoux in June 2006.

His criminal trial took place last week in Paris, after a fairly long investigation which revealed a string of other similar crimes. Relatives of several of the Thai victims are represented in the proceedings.

    We expect a verdict soon.

It is very likely that, as I wrote, had the American authorities followed the rules, the Polanski case would have been tried and disposed of equitably in France.

Now of course the statute of limitation has run out and since charges were never filed, Polanski is technically innocent.

Here is an article in LE POINT (in French) that summarises the Chamoux case:

matchups today, Miami vs OSU and Penn St vs AL.  Unfortunately, the underdog in both cases will have to try to pull it out on the road.

Very slight rooting interest for Miami, a ranked team from FL which, refreshingly unlike another FL team I can think of, isn't afeared of scheduling a tough non-conference schedule and actually going on the road outside of the friendly comforting confines of the Old Confederacy and all that southern hospitality and fried cookin'.

I also have fond memories of Miami from the old days of the 80s when they regularly scheduled games against then-powerhouse ND, and were known fondly as "The Convicts".

Penn State:  I don't normally want overtly Republican-coached teams to win, but in this case I'll make an exception for the Nittany Lions as they go up against Alabama which is about as red state as they come, plus all that ugly segregationist past some of us still can't quite easily forget.   Yes, yes, I know, they're actually integrated now, on the gridiron and in the classroom.  Thank Bear Bryant for that, probably.  Still, when I think Alabama, I think George Corley Wallace and Confederate flags.  Maybe by my next lifetime I'll have forgiven ...

that frequent and long travel to play games -- brutal.

And just the getting there will probably be more brutal than what their team will have to face on the gridiron against Army.  Army hasn't mattered much as a football team to be respected since, maybe, the early 60s period, certainly the 1940s.  I"m just barely old enough to recall some meaningful nationally-significant Army-Navy games on the teevee from the 60s, the last time they mattered and when often the Commander in Chief himself would consider it worthy of his attendance.

Playing in CO-Boulder also is not without its challenges.  Not a creampuff team (though not the feared one from the 1970s or later under that whackjob religious freak coach) and the visitors have to acclimate themselves to playing at a mile-high altitude.

Also, how does the Rainbow coaching staff keep a bunch of high-testosterone young guys in check with a week in Vegas and all the distractions of booze, gambling and showgirls?  Lots of day trips to Hoover Dam, Lake Mead, or Area 51?
