Reid On GOP Push To Return To Dred Scott

TPM:

[Senate Majority Leader Harry] Reid (D-NV) quoted extensively from a column written by Washington Post columnist Michael Gerson on Friday. Reid read this portion from the podium of his press conference:

The authors of the Fourteenth Amendment guaranteed citizenship to all people "born or naturalized in the United States" for a reason. They wished to directly repudiate the Dred Scott decision, which said that citizenship could be granted or denied by political caprice.

They purposely chose an objective standard of citizenship -- birth -- that was not subject to politics. Reconstruction leaders established a firm, sound principle: To be an American citizen, you don't have to please a majority, you just have to be born here.

Then Reid said of Republicans pushing the issue, "They've either taken leave of their senses or their principles."

Well played Mr. Leader.

Speaking for me only

I'd say both and the question is, which came first . . .?

Blew the doors off and didn't even need to state anything about the whistling being done to those who cloth at midnight in 400 count.

Only a stupid man would hit this back across the net.  But we ARE dealing with stupid men, and a few stupid women too.

If you actually believe that the GOP wants to return to Dred Scott, then you probably also believe that the flowers in the hills come from pixies.

It's a clever line, but pretty stupid if you actually engage your brain.

    Context indeed.. (5.00 / 1) (#7)

as in, this "crisis" being the result of so much desperate flailing around and attempting to appear relevant to the nation on the part of the party that turned everything it touched to sh*t from 2000 to 2008.

At this point, the GOP would probably be willing to flog some modern version of Dred Scott on national tv, if it would doing anything to deflect attention from it's bankrupt legacy.

Why the GOP wants to "review" the Amendment that was passed to overturn the Dred Scott SC decision?

Don't tell me it's just to energize the GOP base.

its a totally different shade of Brown they hate this time- quit making it seem like their racist (ignore the fact that a racist sign,statement,and/or tcotchke appears at nearly every major GOP/conservative gathering).
