World Cup: Netherlands v. Uruguay

On paper, Netherlands is the clear favorite. For that reason, I am picking Uruguay.

In the Tour de France, the cobbles punished. Andy Schleck, with the strong assistance of Fabian Cancellara, rode his way back into strong contention, gaining 1 minute, 9 seconds on Contador (he was 40 second behind coming in), who did well today. Schelck's brother Frank broke his collarbone and is out. Cadel Evans also was at the front and leads Contador as well. Lance Armstrong was 2 minutes, 8 seconds behind Schleck and Evans and about a minute behind Contador.

Open Thread.

    today.

They'll field a stronger squad since Uruguay's scorer Suarez has been red-carded out of this game.

Soccer Gods of Instant Karma also will need to account for Uruguay's (Suarez') handballing their way into this game.

would only be in a smiting of Uraguay mood if the handball wasn't called...since it was called Uraguay is safe...now they can win one for Suarez for saving their World Cup...that was a uber-heads-up play he made to punch that ball out....like in American football when a defensive back interferes with a receiver about to score a sure touchdown.

alright, but this is one case where full application of the rules still doesn't quite right the injustice.

Thus the need for the Futbol Gods -- the Watchers, Elohim, whatever you want to call them -- to intervene at their earliest convenience to put the soccer world back in its proper balance.

Also the better team prevailed.  Uruguay was only half the goal threat w/o Suarez.

who wins today so long as Germany beats Spain.

On the one hand, it would be awesome for Uruguay to make the finals.  On the other hand, a dutch-german matchup would be a pretty great game.

I predict Germany wins it all.  After completely dismantling Argentina, not sure how anyone can really bet against them.  No pretty goals, they just beat all 11 players on the team and passed it into the net.

    Interesting watching (none / 0) (#9)

the ESPN pundits last night -- all 3 of them said Spain would prevail over Deutschland tomorrow, most picking Espana to win it all.

Didn't catch all their reasoning, but something to do with Germany being too young and inexperienced compared to Spain and not having faced a goal-deficit situation against a major soccer power in this tournament.  Spain is also seen by them as more talented overall and their team has been gradually elevating their game as the WC has proceeded.

Not sure if I buy it.  So far, Germany has been the most impressive team.  Especially dangerous when they score first, and early.

Gotta wait though to see who the Psychic Octopus picks ...

carded on that bicycle kick.  I thought surely they had changed the rules on high kicks so I looked it up, but they haven't.  He simply wasn't called on it.  That's sort of B.S. in a huge way.  He dinged the hell out of that player.

an excellent show from Afghanistan.  Ben Hodges is clueless on how to talk to liberal journalists though :)  He was explaining to her how the police used to bribe everyone for safe passage in Kandahar and how soldiers have taken over their duties temporarily to end the bribe network and to encourage more equality among people and safety.  You shouldn't have to pay for safety after all :)  Then he goes off on telling her that it has been this way since the silk caravans.  My husband is talking to the television :)  Back out General, back out of your line of thinking here and just shut up....she's going to bury you where you are going with this :)
