Sunday Night Open Thread

The BP Gulf Oil Coast spill may last until fall.

Two men from New Jersey are facing terror charges after trying to board a plane at JFK to Egypt. The feds say they were on their way to Somalia to join Al Shabaab and wage jihad. The New York Times reports the men were going to fight a civil war, not jihad.

Apple announces the new iPhone tomorrow. Now that I have my iPad which I totally love, I've been thinking about swapping my iPhone for something else. Why have both, and I hate synching and the idea of putting more stuff in the omnipresent cloud. Maybe it's time for a Droid or a Blackberry or a Palm. But I'm still curious to see what Apple comes up with.

The MTV Movie Awards are tonight. Sandra Bullock will accept the Generation Award. Last night she made her first public appearance since her split with Jesse James, to accept the Spike TV Troops Choice award for entertainer of the year, voted on by members of the American military worldwide. [More...]

"Let's be honest here, just for a moment. We're all going to be honest, right?" Bullock asked the crowd. "Did I win this for being entertainer of the year, or did I win this because of the spectacular I.E.D. explosion that became my personal life?"

....Bullock also made a seriously classy move in acknowledging ... the intense demands of being a member of the U.S. military. "I would do it over again if it was to entertain our troops," Bullock said, "and our extraordinary troops deserve something much more than some actress in a tight dress talking about herself."

Seems to me we've already seen three award shows with last year's movies, I'm not sure why there's another one.

Much better fare tonight: A new episode of Breaking Bad and the new season premiere of Food Network Challenge.

I'm still not following much news except for Joran Van der Sloot, which I find fascinating, between the media and public presumption of guilt, the as-yet unclear details of the FBI sting in Aruba/Alabama and the fact it's taking place in Peru, known for it's atrocious prison conditions. One benefit: I've read more Spanish in the last two days than I have in ten years. Maybe I won't need that iPad Spanish App I was looking for after all.

This is an open thread, all topics welcome.

    Yeaaaa Celtics!!!

When they lose they're "old" but when they win they're "experienced".

Either way they were on fire tonight and Ray Ray made NBA finals history with his 8 3pters - beating - himself in 2008.

that recently our own leftosphere "Lambert" was addressed by Krugman?  And Krugman didn't disagree with Lambert's criticisms but I found Krugman's excuses a little soft.  I truly appreciate all the work Lambert puts into the fight for economic social justice.  And I seem to remember not too long ago that Lambert lamented about Corrente being the blog that nobody reads, except for Paul Krugman that is :)

Yoplait "greek yogurt" isn't greek yogurt. They don't strain it, and instead add extra milk protein and gelatin. You can invert the container and unmold it.

I read that his new wife is 26 years younger too.  Who would want Rush?  Do you pray he has one foot in the coffin and one on a banana peel and then his stuff is yours? He is such an a-hole.  You know that he's going to come after his bride with that heinous mouth as soon as the bloom is off.  Glenn Greenwald congratulated him on his fourth traditional marriage :)

Is very attractive.  I just don't get it (aside from the bank account).

But who's the hypocrite here - Rush or Elton?

Tony Hayward is still waiting for his life to come back, so Elton John was the Brit fill-in. Both pretty oily.

Or is it all BS all the way around?

his "hate" of drug users and abusers was a big fat act...I wouldn't be surprised to learn his whole schtick is show-business and he doesn't really believe a word of it.

Jeralyn, regarding switching phones (none / 0) (#13)
by ruffian on Mon Jun 07, 2010 at 09:30:28 AM EST
My $.02...now that you have an iPad for mobile computing, I can see switching to a very basic cell phone just for making calls and maybe taking pictures and nothing else. But I can't see switching to a Droid phone and maintaining two different app platforms.

On the other hand, it is an easy way to compare apps and platforms - maybe at some point you would want to switch to one of the Android tablets that comes out. I'd be interested to see what you have to say about the comparison.
