Sunday Night Open Thread
The BP Gulf Oil Coast spill may last until fall.
Two men from New Jersey are facing terror charges after trying to board a plane at JFK to Egypt. The feds say they were on their way to Somalia to join Al Shabaab and wage jihad. The New York Times reports the men were going to fight a civil war, not jihad.
Apple announces the new iPhone tomorrow. Now that I have my iPad which I totally love, I've been thinking about swapping my iPhone for something else. Why have both, and I hate synching and the idea of putting more stuff in the omnipresent cloud. Maybe it's time for a Droid or a Blackberry or a Palm. But I'm still curious to see what Apple comes up with.
The MTV Movie Awards are tonight. Sandra Bullock will accept the Generation Award. Last night she made her first public appearance since her split with Jesse James, to accept the Spike TV Troops Choice award for entertainer of the year, voted on by members of the American military worldwide. [More...]
"Let's be honest here, just for a moment. We're all going to be honest, right?" Bullock asked the crowd. "Did I win this for being entertainer of the year, or did I win this because of the spectacular I.E.D. explosion that became my personal life?"
....Bullock also made a seriously classy move in acknowledging ... the intense demands of being a member of the U.S. military. "I would do it over again if it was to entertain our troops," Bullock said, "and our extraordinary troops deserve something much more than some actress in a tight dress talking about herself."
Seems to me we've already seen three award shows with last year's movies, I'm not sure why there's another one.
Much better fare tonight: A new episode of Breaking Bad and the new season premiere of Food Network Challenge.
I'm still not following much news except for Joran Van der Sloot, which I find fascinating, between the media and public presumption of guilt, the as-yet unclear details of the FBI sting in Aruba/Alabama and the fact it's taking place in Peru, known for it's atrocious prison conditions. One benefit: I've read more Spanish in the last two days than I have in ten years. Maybe I won't need that iPad Spanish App I was looking for after all.
This is an open thread, all topics welcome.
