Peru Extends Joran Van der Sloot Detention For 7 Days

Peruvian news is reporting (translation here, another article here , with translation here) that a judge in Peru has extended the detention of Joran Van der Sloot for 7 days. Under Peruvian law, he was to be presented to a judge within 24 hours of being expelled from Chile.

This afternoon, at the request of Ninfa Espinoza Sotomayor, head of Criminal Prosecution in Lima, police took Joran to the office of the Public Ministry and then back to the police headquarters at Dirincri.

Here are the images from the hotel security camera. (Another video of images with times is here.) Here is the Peru Constitution .

is all.  He's a fairly obvious scumbag, but that doesn't mean he murdered anybody.

She seemed to be walking oddly. At 5 am I would be too if I had been out all night.

young women everywhere not to go to hotel rooms with anyone that looks like this. Just as a general rule.

I hope young women look at things like this and think twice (not saying he's guilty, just what can happen when out and about all night), but sadly, youth makes them 'invincible' in their minds. I've always had a rule, don't put yourself in situations where you could end up on the front page of the paper. And that includes getting home at night, cab vs subway etc. I will say I'm much better with my rule with age  ;)

surveillance video, not stills shot every X seconds.  Looks like they will have pretty definitive proof whether any third person, as some have speculated, entered the room who could have murdered this girl.

    Very good point (none / 0) (#6)

Camera looks like it is right outside the door. Should have a pretty steady picture of the entrances into the room.

The older guy from Albania looked rather tough and I thought if someone else went to that room after Joran left and killed her, wouldn't the camera have picked that up?

is a 3 star hotel -- not "upscale" or "swanky" as the media describes it

Yeah, they got that wrong (none / 0) (#12)

It's a swanky area, but the hotel is more in the Motel 6 category, apparently.

on the other hand, i do believe in evidence. has there been an actual cause of death given by the peruvian medical examiner's office yet? from the reports i read, it said the girl was found dead in the hotel room, but nothing in the room itself to indicate a possible manner of her death, nor were any obvious external injuries described.

the mere fact that video shows him with her proves only that, he was with her. absent definite proof, she may well have died from an alcohol overdose. unfortunate, but self-inflicted.

    Baseball bat (none / 0) (#15)

CNN stated police reported that she died from blunt trauma to the head breaking her neck.  I commented on June 4 that a baseball bat was found.  Police confirmed a baseball bat was taken from the room.

Jeralyn suggested boyfriend, and that seemed unlikely so possibly a girlfriend.  I thought a woman seemed unlikely given the description of her injuries, but a woman would have been able to do greater damage with a baseball bat.... cameras though will clearly show who was in and out.  I'm still going with robbery rather than jealousy.  She won money that was then missing.
