World Cup: Portugal v. Ivory Coast

New Zealand gained an improbable draw in stoopage time with Slovakia earlier this morning.

Now the Group of Death (Group G, Brazil, Portugal, Ivory Coast, North Korea) starts play. The Group of Death is the group that is considered the most difficult for advancing to the next round. Brazil you all know about. Portugal you probably know about. Ivory Coast you may not know about. It is the best team in Africa and a dangerous team. North Korea is not as well known.

I like Portugal, with Cristiano Ronaldo, to find a way.

... in Group F (Italy, Paraguay, New Zealand, Slovakia) to pull the Azzurri's nuts out of the fire.

Though by all rights it should have been an outright win for Slovakia, NZ got the late game miracle and no doubt all of Italy is breathing a huge sigh of relief.

Since we're in Peter Jackson country, it was the Futbol equivalent of the LOTR Return of the King when the Ghost Army honored their oath and got (King) Aragorn's back at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields.

I'm sorry for the excess but [/snivel] I'm still a little emotional [/weepy]. Picking up some pieces from yesterday: Azzurri's 2nd half performance was better than showed on TV because the impeccable African pitch was so wet and slippery by that point in the game. Cannovaro's aerial back-kick would IMO have had a chance (like in the NIKE ad!).

Right! Back to Portugal / Ivory Coast and the semblance of getting some work in before the Brazil / PRK (NKorea) game later.

I'm stuck to listening to the games during the week on the radio and watching some highlights on the ESPN game cast.

I've got to find a way to stream the video.  ESPN3 isn't working.

We cleared the dvr so we could tape some of the games.  But it's different watching a game when you already know the outcome.

Ronaldo is insufferable.  That first yellow card was a total dive.  And the face he makes when whining makes me want to hit him.  Too bad he's really good.

    Go Ivory Coast!

Also, rather than being a write-off in the big scheme of things, it's a great time and way for novice viewers to get to know different teams, players, styles, strategies and The Beautiful Game itself.

was funny as heck to watch in this house.  My husband's family still has its Czech immigrants living so everyone got up early this morning to watch it.  Everything went as planned, the 3 pts in the bag, Slovakia kept the Kiwis mostly on their end of the field.  We were all talking about how bad our last name could really be, and making bad jokes about how the Weiss' got to be part of Slovakian soccer, and how Slovakia needs to quit shaving their heads cuz they look like war criminals.  Suddenly the gentle Kiwis head one in, my husband jumps off the couch and yells, "Damn it, you guys can never stick with anything to the bitter end and that's why you are only half the team you could have been!"

... for efficient, virtuous viewing: all have good live streams and (pretty much) anything you want on demand and in the language/team-focus of your choice.

CBC Canuckistan's English language coverage is hard to beat, with Maritime / Eastern Standard / Central and West Coast time-friendly coverage of games and analyses. (French lang feed below also gets two thumbs up.)

Here's the Live Host Broadcaster Site and a comprehensive list of jumps "back home" for every team but also in virtually every language spoken at the FIFA 2010 WC. Channels list is frequently updated and refreshed.

CBLFT FIFA Coupe du Monde is the CBC's French language feed. Lots of English language resources there. BONUS: an excellent source of in-depth coverage of African teams because so many speak more French than English. It's also a good source of coverage for sports generally, domestic majors & faves or international events (eg, Track and Field.)

TeleLatino's Spanish and Italian language coverage, hemisphere and international feeds, English language too but with focus on Hispanic, Latin/o teams and leagues. Short version: TONS of Futbol coverage year round of any league so get it GET IT.

NOTE TO BTD: I was thinking of tagging my posts with a site or two but the list got more detailed for that. Therefore, could I implore you to put it up at SportsLeft and append with other media sources (besides the overstressed biggies)? I've been meaning to log in/follow the action there but I can't locate my handle and pwd.
