Starting lineups:

USA Lineup: Tim Howard, Steven Cherundolo, Oguchi Onyewu, Jay DeMerit, Carlos Bocanegra, Landon Donovan, Michael Bradley, Ricardo Clark Robbie Findley, Jozy Altidore, Clint Dempsey

England Lineup: Robert Green, Glen Johnson, Ledley King, John Terry, Ashley Cole, Aaron Lennon, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, James Milner, Wayne Rooney, Emile Heskey

First lineup was wrong. Apologies. Not happy with Findley. I preferred Buddle or Gomez. Also I prefer Holden to Clark.

Go USA!

HALFTIME - On the worst error by a keeper that I have ever seen, USA is tied with England 1-1. That said, Bradley has the wrong lineup imo. Holden should be in, not Clark. Clark brings nothing. Holden will defend (Gerrard, who has been the best player on the field, beat Clark for England's goal.) Gomez or Buddle should be in for Findley, who also is useless in this game. The English keeper is obviously very weak and the USA needs more shots on goal. Buddle or Gomez will bring that. Finally, I hope Howard is ok.

FINAL - USA 1, England 1. Lucky result for USA. I do not like Bradley's lineup.

I mean, solid analysis, lucidity, complete sentences, trace elements of logic quite apart from personal allegiances. It's ... almost inhuman. (But wild props for the hard work.)

We've been surfing with different feeds: from the perpetual mucho rapido heart-attack mode of Spanish coverage, the inevitable anti-dive moralizing of the Brits, the shruggy Gallic French, the somewhat panicky Italians.

Gotta run ... brain circuits already short-circuited, set off by early pee-pee dance of anticipation.

... watchable entertainment because anything can happen at any time and often does (like yesterday's knee-buckling last-minute shot that hit the goalpost in RSA(P) vs Mex). Literally inches from glory.
So take the strokes; pick-score aside, your analysis and work has been righteous.

He loves England even if he has been here for over 10 years. He married a local American girl. They have a business together also. They go over once a year when he is totally homesick. The last time in April. Got stuck in the Ash thing and could not get back for an additional week. By then he could not wait to get back here. He is rooting with all his might for England to win and is glued to the World Cup action. There is friendly banter at the office but he is taking it well. The funny thing about his loyalty for his home team is that every time he brings up England or the team, his wife smiles and says, "British Petroleum" and he says, 'oh that again". We love this guy. It has taken us a long time for us to retrain him on words. Love his accent but he wants to call those buildings out back garrrrrrage. We all yell 'garage'. And power to the Beatles.

They score a Respectable+ in this one; more than held their own to stay in it. Amazing play from both netminders, given that the high number of shots on goal weren't watered down by poor shot selection.

A win would have been dreamy and (as the blood pressure drops back to normal) all in all a good spot for the US to be.

But the goal was obviously to not let the Brits to completely thump us, because when other possibilities made themselves available.....nobody on the field could entertain them. Not that that many appeared, but in a good game do many such opportunities appear?

I couldn't believe Bradley's reluctance to substitute when our guys had their tongues down by their ankles. I thought Altidore played pretty well but he obviously can't go a full 90 minutes yet.

it's one point, and one goal each.
First round is about being one of the two teams that advance. For that you need points and goals. There are more games to play before all the points and goals are totaled and two teams win the round.

Should not have been close, US team did not look good, England was a faaaar better team - although Tim Howard is great. And the Endlish goalie...

As my dad said - I could have caught that ball. Too bad we didn't get any more bad shots on goal and we would've won.

I'm kind of embarrased by that, the replays were hard to watch, but I'll take it.

usually controls the games, but we were the team of the quick turn around. Such teams can win, even when they don't "control" the game. But they have to shoot. We didn't. My take is that we feared every opportunity England ever had with possession. Once we had a tie we played it safe for fear of being outplayed and losing. Not the game with heart. And it is just me, but when do we begin to play with heart? Is it possible to win the World Cup without it?

style is actually to not really control the ball much and mostly do counter-attacks. I can't say I really like it much, but it is sometimes effective. I think if they were better they would have more confidence to control the game. That being said, they have been pretty good at making this work for them. You use whatever tools you have.

I do not think it's possible for us to win the world cup, period. But I do think after this game, they should start playing to win. Plus there is a much greater sense of urgency after the first round is over. Win or go home.

I'm depending on you to tell me what I need to know, without having to waste endless hours actually watching. So, was "the worst error by a keeper that I have ever seen" committed by the U.S. goalkeeper, or by the English side? You didn't say, and I can't tell from anything in the post or comments. In other words, who had scored first?

The FIFA site's getting rocked by the whole world so it's slow no matter how good your net toys are. Same goes for many of the big sports sites and usual news/vid sites; YMMV but that's what I've found so far.
Go to the CBC site in Canuckistan for online live coverage or on-demand replays, downloadable master skeds, pre and post game analyses, leader boards, all the bells and whistles -- fast, reliable, comprehensive.
And fergawdsakes let's keep this just between ourselves. :-)

He had a bad day, not even that really, he had a bad nanosecond :) One that will stick with him for a really long time (probably forever). The British press wants blood today. I think he's getting a raw deal, but everyone keeps using "this is the World Cup" as an excuse to hide that they firmly believe the United States never should have been able to advance in this fashion and it really chaps them :) I think we deserve the advance. We held them off, who can deny that? We scored and we held them off, them's the facts.

and her point is - there are 11 people on the field, all of them make up the "team" and plenty of worse teams have done better because of the simple fact that, whoever scores more wins.
I'll take this tie, I agree we could probably have done better, but they could have too. I did not think either the U.S. or England played particularly well in that game.
After watching Germany vs. Australia - let's just say I reaaaally hope we come in 1st place in our group. I do not see either the U.S. or England beating Germany. But hopefully we step up our game soon. I think part of it is that they were playing conservatively because they expected to lose. Not the best way to win, but that should at least change in the next two games.
