World Cup: Uruguay v. France

Boo France! Boo Henry! Well, at least that's what everyone seems to feel. Me? Not so much. I'm a oontrarian though. I also think France wins.

FINAL - 0-0. Not an advertisement for association football. Just an awful, awful game.

Semi-Live Blog below the fold.

Starting lineups:

France

1 H. Lloris 2 B. Sagna 5 W. Gallas 3 E. Abidal 13 P. Evra 8 Y. Gourcuff 14 J. Toulalan 19 A. Diaby 10 S. Govou 21 N. Anelka 7 F. Ribery

Uruguay

1 N. Muslera 6 M. Victorino 2 D. Lugano 3 D. Godin 16 M. Pereira 15 D. Pérez 17 E. Arévalo 11 A. Pereira 18 I. Gonzalez 9 L. Suarez 10 D. Forlan

Here come the Black Hats (Too bad France is in white - they are the designated villains of this World Cup.)

And we're off.

A lot of bounce in this new Adidas ball.

Tentative first 5 minutes. Long balls back and forth.

Ribery with a great cross. Should have been a goal for France.

First 10 minutes - France looks more dangerous.

Quick yellow on France. Won't be the last.

15 minutes - France controlling play and building dangerous looking attacks. Uruguay will be counterpunching apparently hoping for magic from Forlan and Suarez.

Forlan makes nice space for himself and puts a solid shot on goal. Easily parried by the French keeper.

Second yellow. This one for Ribery. France had a nice direct shot and still looks dangerous.

20 minutes - run of play established - France on the attack, Uruguay looking to counter. France looks better so far.

25 minutes - Same run of play. France pressing the attack, Uruguay looking, not really threatening though, to counter.

30 minutes - See report at 25 minutes.

35 minutes - More of the same.

40 minutes - Lackluster. France less effective. Uruguay completely ineffective. A late goal in the half would be very damaging to either side. Expect conservative play to the end of the half.

HALFTIME - France had an early chance that should have been a goal. France has carried the play. Uruguay has not looked dangerous at all. Still 0-0.

SECOND HALF - Not much happening. Forlan from a dangerous spot, not much there.

60th minute - More of the same. Ugly match from Uruguay.

70th minute - Uruguay is certainly not trying to do much. France has been ineffective. Another terrible game.

Henry on for Anelka. Anelka has played pretty poorly but I'm with the commentators, I would have kept them both in and up top. It's going to take an air game to score.

Ball falls to Forlan's feet in front of the French goal and he mishits it. Suarez off for Abreu.

80th minute - It's true that France seems to lack ideas at the attacking end but at least they are attacking. Uruguay's game has been simply pitiful and not deserving of any reward.Just a horrible horrible game and it is all Uruguay's fault.

81st minute - Lodero of Uruguay sent off.

88th minute - 2 minutes plus injury time now. Awful game.

Extra time - 3 minutes.

Last chance free kick in front and not on goal.

Just an awful game.

this should be a great game...I don't thinks either team finishes the game with 11 players, more so if someone scores early.

I was getting excited to watch Italy play a few days ago but then I remembered that they typically spend the early rounds playing boring, defensive, and disappointing soccer.  It's so frustrating when you're trying to cheer for them!  Maybe they'll spice it up a little bit this year.

from the crowd at times and incredible endurance from the players :)  When a team is hot and on game though, there is nothing more thrilling for me to watch.  I could never play basketball, and I think that basketball is one of those games too where creative solutions can overcome anything.  I could play soccer though, and my spouse was very good long ago.  Watching a team that is on their game gives me goosebumps.  I'm at a disadvantage watching Univision too because my Spanish isn't great.  I'll be toodling around and the announcer gets really excited, and today I would race to the T.V. just see how badly the teams effed up again :)

my Spanish is pretty good and I have a hard time with understanding sports commenter. In English too. But the Univision commenters have the advantage of emotional delivery, which is a good enough clue as to what is going on.  I listen on the radio when I have to, the only thing I really need is to hear GOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAL then I listen for the name of the country.
