Phoenix Suns Owner Denounces AZ SB 1070; "Los Suns" On Cinco De Mayo

More fodder for George Will, Phoenix Suns owner denounces SB 1070:

Suns Managing Partner Robert Sarver made a bold statement Tuesday denouncing the controversial new immigration bill that recently was signed into law.

In announcing that the Suns would wear their "Los Suns" jerseys in recognition of playing Game 2 against San Antonio on Cinco de Mayo on Wednesday, Sarver also addressed the immigration bill that has been a divisive national topic since Gov. Jan Brewer enacted it into law April 23. "The frustration with the federal government's failure to deal with the issue of illegal immigration resulted in passage of a flawed state law," Sarver said in a statement released by the Suns on Tuesday morning. "However intended, the result of passing this law is that our basic principles of equal rights and protection under the law are being called into question, and Arizona's already struggling economy will suffer even further setbacks at a time when the state can ill-afford them."

(Emphasis supplied.) Yes, Arizona's new law is a resounding success.

But that's the whole point of boycotts, isn't it? When people don't use their hearts as you'd like them to, you hit them where it hurts. Sarver wants to avoid taking a financial hit for a bad policy. Sure, he also wants to pretty it up with his nice talk about "diversity," and maybe he means it and maybe he doesn't -- but that doesn't matter. Who cares? What matters is the action. If Arizona really looks like it's going to take an economic hit from this decision, and people realize they could lose money, that's when they'll act, and that's when things like this get changed.

It matters because if they had used their influence before the law was written, the outcome could be different and we might not be having this conversation.

It matters where their money went, who are they ramping up and keeping in office.  Sure they say they don't agree, but if all these businesses really do not like the law, one would expect some R cash turning into D cash before the election.

My point is that businesses are supporting the very people that created the law they are denouncing, will they continue to send them money ?  Or is this PR non-sense ?

    It matters to me.

Just think how those who hate anything Mexican feel about their team wearing a uniform with the "Mexican" language. Kind of a slap in the face, I'd say.

And, no doubt scapegoating Latinos for the poor economy is a grand tradition in some parts.

"Taking our jobs"....do you really have any data to support that?  Are there tons of people lining up to pick fruit and scrub toilets?  Perhaps, but you would really need to prove that point....

Test:  if it really is just about illegal immigration--the process--and not that we have too many of "them," then just issue green cards to everyone already here.  Would the antis really go for that?  Of course not.

It is about a loss of culture and too much Spanish being spoken, and too many signs in Spanish, and teaching kids in Spanish in the schools, and letting people take driver's tests in Spanish.....It is about the need to establish English's superiority in the face of the threat of Spanish inudating everything....

It is about seeing cars on blocks in front yards, and too many people living in the same home--actual examples cited by the Arizona legislator responsible for this statute.....

It is about the fear and loathing of Latino culture, but in a good way....not about bigotry or racism....

Unemployment in Arizona is 4% and crime is in decline.

I posted a link to a CNN report, in another thread, about a steel plant owner in Phoenix that fired 12 undocumented workers and can't replace them. Not even ex convicts want the job and he is losing 4-5 million dollars a year.

So the one with a bad premise is you. This is about hatred of Mexicans.

The writer of SB1070 has connections to Neo Nazis. here
Russell Pearce who introduced SB1070 forwarded a pro Nazi email to his supporters. here and he was caught visiting Neo Nazis at a rally. here

The facts speak for themselves. This people are bigots who hate anything Mexican, period.

If they can move the All-Star game, that would be key....

They moved the Super Bowl; so, now it is MLB's turn....Let's hope that they are up to it.....Even if the move is qualified by weasly language about wanting to avoid controversy by moving the game to a non-controversial site.

Bud Selig is no Paul Tagliabue.

Sorry, but I am a Brewer fan and I despise the Selig family.  I think the steroid controversy should say all there needs to be said about Bud Selig and character.

I'm not saying he wouldn't do it, but he won't do it without an insurmountable amount of pressure, which I don't believe will happen.

They are beloved by Latinos in LA--ever since Fernandomania, I guess.

The Dodgers will play the D-Backs in Arizona next week, I think.....How about a little armband or something....Asking them not to show at all might be too much wishful thinking....

Before you praise Los Suns, maybe you should see where their campaign dollars went.

Who knows, maybe they really care, but I suspect they are thinking with their wallets rather then their hearts.

Funny how all these people who are coming out in AZ were quiet as mice when it mattered, you know, like before it became law.  I feel like a couple calls from heavy hitters is AZ could have gotten that bill vetoed, but silence.  Now we are suppose to believe that they suddenly found their consciences, ya OK.

I suspect the realization that the rest of the country might now spend their hard earned cash on Los Suns paraphernalia and tickets is driving this 'outrage'.  Nice jab about the Fed, real subtle.

What difference does it make whether they're thinking with their hearts or their wallets? It's a nice gesture to the Latino community and the Suns players are at least implicitly endorsing its Latino support by wearing them.

In all fairness, they'd probably sell more jerseys if they changed their name to BEAT LA for a night.
