It's a beautiful Sunday afternoon here, too nice to stay at the computer. What haven't we written about that you'd like to discuss? Here's an open thread, all topics welcome.

    who noticed the smoking car and flagged down a passing cop was an unemployed Vietnam Vet and not an immigrant of dubious status, and that the incident occurred in New York rather than in Phoenix, or the guy might have been rather reluctant to initiate his disaster-averting "encounter" with the authorities.  (Comment also posted on yesterday's Times Square thread.)

    that he was not carrying a piece, or a couple buds in his pocket or maybe took a little bump from a bit of powder to make his day.... Jesus, damn good thing he did not have any outstanting tickets or, god forbid, was behind in child support...
    Lots of reasons to be persona non grata in this day in age.

    He said that Bush believes the same thing on Wednesday that he believed on Monday - no matter what happened on Tuesday.

    Here is Gibbs on April 23 telling us about Obama's reaction to the unfolding environmental nightmare;

    Asked whether Obama had second thoughts on offshore drilling, Gibbs said, "No."

    Obama still believes that "we have to have a comprehensive solution to our energy problems," and the spill did not open up new questions about his drilling plan, he said.

    "We've taken swift action to ensure the safety of those that are there and to ensure the safety to the environment by capping the exploratory well," Gibbs said.

    "We need the increased production. The president still continues to believe the great majority of that can be done safely, securely and without any harm to the environment," he said.

    The WH, on behalf of President Obama, said that it is sticking to its plan, "since its proposal was based on careful assessment of risks and spill response capabilities."    But, now it is on "hold."

    said that he asked Secretary Salazar to report back to him in 30 days on what, if any, additional safety devices are needed "going forward".   He also said that he still believes we need more drilling , but as "I have always said, it must be done responsibly".  So, now we can all relax, nothing unsafe and nothing irresponsible in our energy future.  No mention of his continued commitment to more nuke plants, but, similarly, we can rest assured that it will be done safely and responsibly, so what could go wrong?

    would have stopped this quickly, but BP didn't want to pay for it and the U.S. does not require them to have it.

    Seems to me that's pretty easily changed.  Drunken morons running tankers into reefs and icebergs, OTOH, there's no way to prevent.

    Did you know, btw, that there are not and never have been any earthworms native to North America?  All those lovely critters aerating and feeding your garden soil came here from elsewhere.

    Unfortunately, they're apparently also totally destroying certain NA forest ecosystems that were never supposed to have them.
