Monday Night TV and Open Thread

Monday has turned out to be the best night of the week for TV. There's Dancing With the Stars, a 2 hour "24", Nurse Jackie, Life Unexpected and Damages. The only way to watch this much TV is with Tivo to fast forward through the commercials.

The AP has a wrapup of the three leading contenders to replace Justice John Paul Stevens if he announces his retirement.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio is in the news again. Now he's started a "Pedalvision" program for inmates. If they want to watch TV, they have to do it by riding a stationary bike to generate electricity.

This is an open thread, all topics welcome.

    Regarding the Michael Steele sideshow (5.00 / 1) (#12)
by andgarden on Mon Apr 05, 2010 at 10:38:40 PM EST
I don't think it matters one bit. Nobody knows who he is, and the RNC really doesn't matter much.

    Whatever puts the GOP in a tizzy (5.00 / 1) (#16)

is a Good Thing.  Steele is ridiculous, but we all knew that already.

eke it out. What an excellent run by Butler. Argh. Duke is like the Yankees.

    Great game.... (none / 0) (#18)

Butler's got a lot of heart. Almost made that last shot for the win. Oh, well, next year.

Anyone here seen Shutter Island? (none / 0) (#1)
by observed on Mon Apr 05, 2010 at 09:07:45 PM EST
I just watched it, and thought it was both powerful and awful.
Very strange topic for a movie (and book), IMO.
Speaking as someone who has known way too many people with serious mental illness, this was yet another movie where the portrayal of mental illness seemed compelling, if you didn't know better.

It's very powerful, but just too strange and unbelievable, IMO.

    I haven't seen it yet (none / 0) (#19)

but have it penciled in.  My Aunt the movie buff saw it, liked it, said she wanted and needed to see it again to put things together even better because nothing is what you think it is until the end.

    good. The plot stank.
Clint Eastwood is a mystery to me, btw.
I hated him when he was only an actor.
I saw a more recent film where he was actor and director; hated the movie, and again hated him.
He just is so SLOOOWWWWWW and BORING, with a voice that could be used to cure ADHD.
Obviously  mine is the minority report, but I have no interest in watching him. I might want to see a movie he directs.

Without giving away the ending, (none / 0) (#24)
by observed on Tue Apr 06, 2010 at 06:50:46 AM EST
I want to add that the ending creates a premise which is far more ridiculous and unbelievable than the alternative, which is that Nazi-style psychological experiments were being conducted.
    Hello??? 1950's CIA experiments anyone?
Not to mention the highly unethical experiment which the Unabomber was a subject in when he attended Harvard. He was psychologically abused for years, in the name of "research", by a psychologist who advised the CIA on brainwashing techniques.
And that doesn't even get into the question of lobotomies. Ugh.
The truth is far worse than the "preposterous" hypothesis of the movie.
