iPhone May Get Live TV Via 3G

What could give AT&T's sagging 3G network, the iPhone and the iPad a boost? Equipping them to use the SlingPlayer Mobile App that works with a Slingbox on the 3G network, not just wireless. And it looks like it's happening. Here's the skinny.

I don't have a SlingBox, but my dentist does, and I've been playing with it when I go to his office for a couple of years. It works well. It's a box you plug into your cable tv at home, and when you are anywhere else, you can watch it on your phone, change the channels, watch programs you've TIVO'd, etc. [More...]

I think it will be a big deal. The millions of us who bought the iPhone when it first launched are coming to the end of our 2 year contracts with AT&T. Because of their spotty service, lots of people, me included, have been waiting before re-signing up, and thinking about switching to Verizon for the Nexus One or Sprint for its G4 or T-Mobile. I'm on the fence, but I think I'm waiting for the promised new iPhone 4G that's due in a few months.

Question: Is it too late for AT&T and 3G when everyone else is moving to 4G?

    AT&T will be going 4G before long (none / 0) (#1)

    the fact of the matter is that it's a bigger transition for Verizon, which will have to swap out the entire core of its network. The good news is that everyone but Sprint will finally be using the same technology (LTE). The bad news is that frequency assignments are still all over the place, nationally and internationally. We are not far from the 16-band phone.

    I had no idea something like this was available.  That is really cool.  Probably would never get it though because a) I try to avoid things that will help me lose focus and b) I don't spend much time on public transport, in airports, etc.  Just don't travel much right now.

    when they said tv I expected crappy broadcast.
    with this I could get my dish network remotely?

    ... is that the network is overtaxed, how will adding live TV transmissions not make things massively worse?

    assuming it sells even moderately.  I'm guessing the upcoming ipad is what prompted them to get the sling box stuff working.

    Thanks J for explaining what the sling box is - I've never known what people were talking about. It does sound cool.
