Prop 19: Up in Smoke

Bump and Update: Prop 19 has been defeated. On to 2012.

Update: Real-time Prop 19 results coming in here. It's not doing well. While only 10% of the vote is in, it seems to be losing in every county which has results showing.

Polls close soon in California. The LA Times says exit polls show Prop 19 hasn't been a driving force among voters. They are more interested in the Governor's race. But LA Weekly reports some polling places near college campuses ran out of provisional ballots.

What happens if it fails? Activists try harder in 2012. Whatever happens in California, Colorado activists will launch their petition drive for legalization in 2012 on Wednesday in Boulder.

at least my family is on board for 2012.

oh crikey, abc on the background and they mention this and it may save Boxer by bringing out younger Dems. off camera voice makes the "only in CA" comment . . .  after tonight, even with a no on 19, I'll be proud to live in/be a native of, a state that continues to get that comment.

I know my namesake plant woulda been a beauty stray...she will have to grow in our dreams.

Maybe, with a little evolutionary enlightenment & luck, we will see her grow strong in your garden before we die.

if the GOP falls to second tier status in Colorado thanks to the Mayes/Tancredo stuff would that help suppress the anti-legalization vote enough to make Colorado a viable legalization state- or are California, Oregon and possibly Alaska still the most likely to legalize?

...is actually pro-legalization.  I don't think that aspect will have an effect either way.

It will depend more on the campaign and who's running it. Hopefully some good lessons were learned from the Medical MJ campaign.

The last poll I saw had 46% support--not a bad starting point.

bring up the same or similar initiative in back to back years? If so, maybe prop 19 will do better in a presidential election year.

2012, and it will be better written than Prop 19 was in terms of the law it would implement.

As in "Up in smoke"? That's what the prohibitionists and their enablers in the media regularly do to make light of a very serious subject in order to denigrate the issue...and its' advocates.

During the campaign to change the laws, when the media realized the interest that this was garnering, they tapered off their typical sophomoric tittering and began to take it seriously. If drug law reformers begin repeating prohib memes, the prohibs will feel vindicated...and we'll be back to the same old crap again.

Bad enough they do it; let's not emulate them, shall we?

usually we're totally on the same page, but I gotta disagree here.

One thing that seperates our people from the haters is our sense of humor...I personally have no problem with keeping it light, the other side of this fight are the heavy's, we are the take 'er easy's.

Ironically, safe and legal recreational marijuana use should not be a serious issue or thing, it should be a light and fun and happy issue or thing...thats a big part of our argument...relax America, it's really not a big deal, put away your chains, empty your cages.

But I am only too well aware of how propaganda works.

And one of the favorite tactics of any successful propaganda effort is the demeaning and denigration of one's opponents by using an inference that their opponent's positions lack merit due to an implied childishness worthy of condescension.

Hence the use of language common in the society that implies the opposition's position stems not from thought and reason but from immature thought processes. Which has been successfully used by prohibitionists and thoughtlessly(?) aped by their media targets.

Think about that the next time you see a similar headline in a newspaper, or hear some newsie spouting off with similar terms. Watch the facial expressions and listen to the tonalities of voice when this takes place. More manipulation to 'manufacture consent' via making any reservations you may have vanish out of fearing that you may be out of step with the 'mainstream'. Old as the proverbial hills.

the condescension you're talking about bro...I just feel sorry for the clueless condescenders...they know not what they do and can't comprehend the longstanding injustice they support, thoughtlessly or otherwise.  They're displaying obvious ignorance of the topic...think of it as unintentional comedy.

Jeralyn is not being condescending in the slightest in this context, imo, just borrowing an apt slang phrase...our dreams of some progress out in Cali went up in smoke, like our money spent tilting at this windmill (and paying black market prohibition prices:)

    Just gotta keep on rollin'...

As I pointed out on another blog devoted to drug law reform, in artillery practice we had to learn 'bracketing' and 19 was a version of that, adjusting 'range' to hit the 'target'. Said target will be toast come 2012, as now we have the 'range'.

But part of the problem reformers have always had was that use of those common terms by news media in order to convey the prohibitionist message. Most newsies when it comes to illicit drug issues are little more than two-legged Pomeranian lapdogs happily licking up crumbs from the desks of their prohib 'sources', the vast majority of which obviously have a stake in maintaining drug prohibition. Said newsies tend to uncritically swallow prohib scheisses and regurgitate it almost completely undigested, to the great benefit of said sources.

Needless to say, with no critical challenging by the media of the most common lies promulgated by the prohibs, the cycle of mis/disinformation continues unabated and becomes part of the cultural language...and hence the same old 'titter factor' I mentioned above becoming part of the prohib propaganda arsenal.

And, when our own start to do it unthinkingly, well, we might as well throw in the towel...
