Saturday College Football Open Thread

I like a lot of games today. One game I really like, Auburn (-7) over Georgia, is now off the board because Cam Newton may not play due to potential NCAA violations. It's going to cost him the Heisman and maybe Auburn's chance to play for the national championship. FTR, I think college players should be paid. A lot of people are making a lot of money on college football and most of the players are not. I also want a college football playoff and hope the season produces a mess in order to increase the pressure for a playoff.

I'm 65-69 for the season. I like a lot of games today, some more than others so I will include my units (1 unit play unless otherwise indicated) in the picks as well so you can follow along with my monetary results today.

Cincinnati (+5.5) over West Va., Ga. Tech(+3) over Miami, Northwestern (+10) over Iowa, Indiana (+22) over Wisconsin, South Florida (+3) over Louisville, Ole Miss (+3) over Tenn (2 units), Kentucky (-15) over Vandy (3 units), Iowa State(-2.5) over Colorado (3 units), Army (+1.5) over Kent, Notre Dame (+7) over Utah, Syracuse (-3) over Rutgers, Texas Tech (+15) over Oklahoma, Texas A&M (-3) over Baylor (5 units), Miss State (+14) over Alabama (2 units), Cal (+21) over Oregon, Ariz. St (+6) over Stanford, Arizona (-4) over USC, and Nevada (-8) over Fresno State.

Go Gators!

Guess Auburn isn't so concerned about the possible scandal.

And, a minority opinion here, I do not think college players should be paid. They get a full-ride scholarship, special academic help, great facilities (just take a gander sometime at the Jaqua Center at Oregon). They get a whole lot more than the mere academic student.

Yes, even though I love football, I am one of those who thinks too much money and resources go to football and basketball, to the detriment of the academic mission that is supposedly the main purpose of colleges and universities.

If playing college sports, especially football and basketball, is a job and athletes are to be considered employees, then let's end the whole charade of student-athletes; have the NFL and the NBA form a farm team system like MLB; and let colleges get on with the business of providing an education.

And then we can stop paying coaches millions while professors see their pay cut, their class size grow, their facilities deteriorate, and their students' tuition continue to rise at ridiculous rates.

scrub the smudge of Cam's naughtiness off though this year with Tide fans.  I will just have to eat it :)  It is all they have left....this White Water job :)  I don't think college players should get paid either.

    Albert Means.

Alabama should have gotten the Death Penalty for that scandal.

Simple. It's because it isn't an Auburn scandal, it's a Mississppi State scandal. And Cam Newton is eligible at Auburn in much the same way that Albert Means was eligible at Memphis.

Great win over UGA yesterday. This morning, the Tigers are smiling. No, really. They are. Look.

College players are exploited... (none / 0) (#2)

...and should be paid, or allowed to attend 2 more years of university schooling after they are not football eligible anymore.

They should pass on playing college football and pay their own tuition to go to school, or get a job.

possibly tough game for the ducks (none / 0) (#3)
by Turkana on Sat Nov 13, 2010 at 12:08:29 PM EST
maybe their toughest remaining. no. 12 defense in the country, on the road.

hopefully, last week was a wake-up call. and if you're going to have a lousy game, best to do it at home, against a mediocre team that doesn't have its starting qb.

and you're right that college athletes should be paid. and any ducks fan who remembers the joey harrington year knows we need a national playoff. the ducks got screwed out of the title game, that year. and i like their chances, this year. and i want to see boise and tcu exposed, rather than have them play each other again.

    I think Cal is undefeated (none / 0) (#5)
by brodie on Sat Nov 13, 2010 at 01:29:55 PM EST
at home this year.  Problem is, one, they're not exactly undefeated in the other games, so have been a great disappointment overall, and two, their pretty good D has to go up against a hyperdrive, 21st century Canards offense that is simply blowing away opponents, especially in the 3d qtr.

Hoping Cal can make this an interesting game to watch, at least for a good half.  But I suspect, as I said last week, that this Orégone squad of wild waterfowl won't likely be stopped by anyone until, maybe, BCS Bowl Championship time where the opponent has a few more weeks to prepare, physically, psychologically and in terms of strategery.

It's got to be the most revolutionary offense in college football since, what, the introduction of the forward pass back in the leather helmet days?

As for paying players, I strongly suspect this has been going on under the table for decades, and the big, stupid NCAA only occasionally gets a glimpse of the tip of the iceberg -- and may suspect worse, but doesn't want to sully the rep of the sport with a huge scandal.  Yes, prohibition (against paying) college football athletes doesn't seem any more effective than the prohibition on alcohol, and just sends it underground.  A scholarship plus revenue-sharing "stipend" for the players seems the way to go.

players get paid, as so often comes to light, so it's time to end the hypocrisy.

cal also has a pretty mediocre offense, and they haven't played anyone good at home, so realistically the ducks should win it easily. but it still worries me. the ducks looked very flat for the first 20 minutes or so, last week.

I just received my father's death certificates in the mail, and his place of birth is mistakenly listed as Uruguay. How they translated Clifton, NJ to Uruguay is anyone's guess. All of the other information is correct.

My question is, does this mistake make it any less valid for the purposes I need it, like filing insurance claims, claiming property, and the like? I'll do it over again if I have to, but it took almost a month to get these copies and if I don't have to do it again I don't want to. And who knows what they will screw up next time.  Arrrrgh.

    Uruguay? Wow... (5.00 / 1) (#17)
by Anne on Sun Nov 14, 2010 at 09:32:33 AM EST
I would get it corrected; call the funeral home and tell them about the error (since they are quite possibly the ones who made it).  Ask if getting it fixed is something they can do, or at least get started, or whether you have to deal with the issuing agency directly.  If they can do it, tell them you need corrected ones ASAP.

Big question: do you have his birth certificate, just in case you are asked to prove that the information on the death certificate is wrong?

It's better to make sure it's correct; I can't imagine a situation where someone would question and want you to prove his citizenship, but stranger things have happened.

In the years I have been handling estates, I've only ever had two death certificates that had to be corrected, and both were because the Social Security number was incorrect; I believe we had to provide something that showed the correct number, and attest to the whole thing, so be prepared.

It's possible it won't take as long to make the correction as it did to get the death certificates in the first place.

The other alternative is to just pretend you didn't notice and don't worry about it unless and until someone questions it; if it's something that's going to nag at you, I'd just go ahead and see what you have to do to get it fixed.  You might try seeing if the issuing agency addresses this situation on its website, too - it seems like it would be a pretty commonly-asked question.

I'm sorry that you're having to go through this on top of everything else; you know, with all the discussion about "fixing" Social Security, and about Congress trying to make sure no bank or servicer has to be accountable for the foreclosure mess or for the predatory lending that was going on, it's things like what happened to your Dad that no one wants to think about.

My heart aches not just for the loss of your dad, but for the crushing financial pressures that no doubt made his life hell - all because he wanted to be able to take care of someone he loved.

That's just criminal, but it seems like no one who has the power to right these kinds of wrongs has any interest in doing so (although the state attorneys general may be able to do something if Congress doesn't cut their legs out from under them first).

    Hang in there.
