Thursday Night Open Thread: TV and Taxes

My DVRs are set tonight for the new Bruce Springsteen movie on HBO, The Promise: The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town (footage from 1976 to 1978), Project Runway, the Apprentice and Grey's Anatomy.

I've been working all day trying to get my tax stuff ready for the accountant by tomorrow -- the October 15 deadline is right around the corner.

Since I'm not done yet, here's an open thread, all topics welcome.

    another attempt (5.00 / 2) (#24)

at photography.  I call this series:

City Living - a love story

    copley
    south station
    canal
    windy day
    harborjfk
    carson beach
    malibu
    fenway

I think carson beach is the best representation of what makes Boston so great, the mixture of urban, and for lack of a better term, not-urban, all in one shot.

All of these were taken within city limits, from my phone.

    thanks guys! (5.00 / 1) (#44)

Anne - I have a droid incredible, it's the first camera I've had in years, and it's great, because I just have it on me wherever I go.

With the exception of Fenway, these were all taken in South Boston/Dorchester.  Not exactly where the tourists or bridge & tunnel crowd go.  Unless they're visiting the jfk library.  On a side note, if you're visiting boston, the jfk library is a pretty nice spot that's kind of off the beaten path.

ahhh the weather.  The past couple days have been pretty gross.  Although sometimes I like the wind and rain.  Today is gorgeous though, and I think it's supposed to be nice all weekend.

If they think this is bad - don't come in winter!  Seattle doesn't have anything on a Boston winter.  The wind chill can be absolutely brutal.  And there's nothing quite like a noreaster for staying indoors.

They do capture the lesser advertised aspects of city living. I always like looking at a city skyline from a park or a beach, as in your carson  beach pic. I didn't realize Boston had such places right in the city. I have an old roommate living in Charlestown now, and she just loves it. I visited once and it seemed like a great city. I still remember the delicious clams at a place we went on the harbor, and the pizza on the north side.

    A Federal judge in Michigan (none / 0) (#1)
by andgarden on Thu Oct 07, 2010 at 08:44:28 PM EST
rules on the merits of the Constitutionality of healthcare reform, upholding it.

    On the individual mandate:

The plaintiffs have not opted out of the health care services market because, as living, breathing beings, who do not oppose medical services on religious grounds, they cannot opt out of this market. As inseparable and integral members of the health care services market, plaintiffs have made a choice regarding the method of payment for the services they expect to receive. [I.e., by imposing massive bills on everyone else when they appear uninsured in the emergency room.]

    . . .

The minimum coverage provision, which addresses economic decisions regarding health care services that everyone eventually, and inevitably, will need, is a reasonable means of effectuating Congress's goal.

The judge also dismisses the "direct tax" argument. But I find that one so absurd that I won't even waste space quoting the judge on why.

[I.e., by imposing massive bills on everyone else when they appear uninsured in the emergency room.]

I tried to find this in the ruling, and it wasn't there, so it appears it was your editorial statement?

I don't know who wrote the statement, but it shows a lack of understanding of the Insurance Mandate Act and Tax, and a general lack of understanding of poverty.

The Insurance Mandate Act and Tax in no way ends the emergency room problem, and may even compound it.  People who can't afford insurance will have to pay the tax penalty which lessens their ability to afford medical care or ER expenses and more will be hefted on the rest.  Alternatively, those in extreme hardship will have the tax waived and still end up in the ER.

Somehow those who magically think that this tax and mandate is going to help the health care situation in this country are thinking in a very narrow manner.  Some exploration and research are in order.

It used to be that "progressives" felt sorry for the down-trodden.  Now they like to demonize them when it suits them.  Good luck with that.

It is my editorial comment (none / 0) (#14)
by andgarden on Fri Oct 08, 2010 at 08:05:49 AM EST
but it comports with the actual text of the ruling. As for your objection: if that happens, then the intent of the bill will have failed. In principle, subsidies are supposed to be available to make insurance affordable. In practice, that's TBD.

BTW, anyone fluent in Manipuri?  I just bought a ticket on line for Henrik Ibsen's last play,"When We Dead Awaken."

    Director's note:

Inspired by the central idea of Ibsen's last play When we Dead Awaken, this piece of work concentrates only on the thematic content; it does not subscribe to the idea of either a realistic plot or normal structure.  The performance is designed to express the internal entanglement of characters without distorting the original idea, using selected dialogues without any change from the original text.

In doing this play, I just wanted to know a different Ibsen with imagery, fantasy and ectasy -far away from the realistic conventional mould where the performance becomes more subtle, symbolic, suggestive and stylized.  It was not easy for me to prepare a performance text for this.  But I have enjoyed immensely playing the hide-and-seek game with the genius during the making of this performance and in the process of interpreting it.

    yes, probably, sort of.

    Although it's not entirely clear.

"Personal property is considered to be lost if the owner has involuntarily parted with it and is ignorant of its location. Mislaid property is that which an owner intentionally places somewhere with the idea that he will eventually be able to find it again but subsequently forgets where it has been placed. Abandoned property is that to which the owner has intentionally relinquished all rights."

This doesn't fit 100% within any of those definitions.

"Lost or mislaid property continues to be owned by the person who lost or mislaid it. When one finds lost goods, the finder is entitled to possession against everyone with the exception of the true owner."

Since the FBI asked for it back, I guess this means they get it back.  That being said, I doubt the person who found it would be prosecuted for stealing if the FBI doesn't ask for it back.

Fuzzy law.  Also, since they didn't really "lose" the property, they just left it there, it could be considered abandoned.  In which case, it belongs to the finder, I believe.
