No one's trick or treated at my house the last 3 years, but I have a feeling tonight is different. Halloween seems to be a bigger deal this year, I think because so many people need an escape hatch from their economic problems and disappointment with the way things are going in this country, if only for a few hours.

I'm off to a conference in Montreal, then to U of Vermont (Burlington), then to Cornell (Ithaca).

Regretting the decision to give seminars - which seemed like a fun idea at the time, and which now seems like too much work in too little time! But that's always the case. I'll be doing my usual thing - writing my powerpoints on the plane and in the hotel rooms at the last minute. Some things apparently never change....

You are couragous.  I, on the other hand, have learned the hard way to have old-fashioned handouts as a backup when relying on bad planners.

watching Chris Matthews show. They were talking about the Senate contests and the Republicans who look to be winners on Tuesday.

    Talk about Halloween.
Talk about the Freaks inheriting the Earth.

And yet I can only feel a sense of numbness about it.

The Democrats were given everything on a silver platter. All three branches of government. And they threw it all away.

    The wars.
    The patriot act.
The absurd health insurance company giveaway.
    You know the litany.

As much as my stomach is turning at the prospect of these Republican cretins being put into a position of power, my stomach has already been turned inside-out by the display of callousness on the part of the Democratic party and by its titular leader, Mr. Obama.

The revelations by Wikileaks, and the predictable Bush-textbook response by the Obama administration was just extra rancid icing on a rancid and decomposing piece of cake.

issue in years. i've decided on a candy bowl down on my lower steps and then blocking off above that. that way i don't have to worry about the dog/cats/bird/kittens. also, my bottom steps aren't that well lit and i would hate for a kid in costume to trip on them. could ruin their fun.

the only place i could keep the dog where she wouldn't alert to the door would be the outside studio, but i think the cats would still freak a bit and my bird would prob step up in the alert dept sans dog :)

by Anne on Sun Oct 31, 2010 at 07:58:42 PM EST
in the 27 Halloweens we've been in our house - we're out in the country and there just aren't enough homes on our street to make it worth any kid's while.  Not only don't we have the expense of candy, but we don't then have the temptation of the leftovers!

When the kids were little, we'd go to my mom's neighborhood, or later, to a townhouse community that was built about 5 miles away.

I made a chicken/potatoes/mushrooms concoction in the slow cooker, white wine/chicken stock "gravy" simmering all day smelled heavenly - that's for tomorrow.  Hubby caught some striped bass yesterday, so I steamed two of the fillets in parchment, cooled them, then flaked and prepared them like crabmeat, into cakes.  First time I've done that, and if I do say so myself, they were delicious.

in Enterprise was last night between 5 and 7pm.  The different churches are doing something called Trunk or Treat so I think I will take Zoey (3) and Naomi (1) to the largest one tonight.  It is being held in the old football stadium of the destroyed high school and there are supposed to be some inflatables to jump on there too.  Last night was fun but did not have the grandbabies.  Joshus is an alien this year.

We got some great photos at Joshua's school fall festival.  A local award winning portrait photograhpher was taking a single photo for $5 which she donated to the school since it is so broke.  I got photos of all three there, she did a really terrific job.  As soon as my scanner software is fixed (husband can't get it at the moment) I'm sending them to Captain Howdy, he does a lot for kids and did a lot for Josh, wanted to share our kids with him while they were all dressed up.  Zoey is a devastating devil.  But we decided to not take her to the church get together as the Devil, not down here.....she will be an Auburn cheerleader tonight.

    ends up being.

There's been a banner up at the baptist church near my parent's neighborhood for weeks....must admit, though, considering where it was I didn't really care one bit what it was. Just thought they were trying to get recruits to their house of holy.

and a Coptic Christian church. In addition to a lot of young professional couples (most but not all without children), late middle aged couples and elderly widows we have quite a few immigrants from the Mid-East, Ethiopia, India, etc. in the neighborhood. It seems it takes awhile for the immigrant children to convince Mom and Dad that trick or treating is an ok thing. When children do show up, they tend to be toddlers accompanied by both their young professional American parents. But, in the last two-three years some older immigrant children have been showing up too -- I think it is a sign of assimilation, and that they're getting old enough to wear down their parents' objections.

Last night, though, I was surprised and charmed to see a Mid-Eastern family that just recently moved in across the street show up at the door - Mom and three little ones, all in traditional garb (the girls had head scarves) but with shiny new plastic pumpkins. Their house is owned by an Iranian immigrant who moved here during the revolution. He moved out of the house to more upscale digs about 15 years ago, but he tends to rent it to recent immigrants from the Mid-East. In this case I think it was the little boy (about 6) who got Mom to agree to the trick or treating. He was obviously giving instructions to the others about what they were suppose to do, and was a little impatient and irritated, in that way big brothers can be, when his very tiny little sister got confused and tried to give me candy. She couldn't have been more adorable.

That kind of ethnic mix is the one thing I really do miss about living in an urban area.  VT is a wonderful place with wonderful people, but aside from the Jamaican guys who come every fall for a couple months to pick our apples, it's pretty relentlessly white Christian (more or less, we're the least religiously observant state in the country, I read).

Halloween is a pretty hair-raising event for newcomers to America, even those from Western European countries.  It's so nice to hear about your neighbors venturing into the spirit of the thing.  It's just a wonderful kind of holiday for kids.

This year there are a multitude of super heros and many hippies.
Lots of hippies actually. My niece, who is "a hippie" called today - it is her 20th birthday today and she is off at college. She asked what it felt like having people dress up like people "my generation". Ah, I adore her.

My sister's family just got two rescue kittens.  I'm recovering from the severed artery in my leg and major loss of blood from when they both tried to climb up to say a surprise "hi". It might be fun to sue my sister, but definitely not worth it. But the kittens are great fun. Hope yours are OK. Bottle feeding means very young. They may bond with you.

have had the 3 for almost a week. just temping until next weekend when the more perm foster home has room. they aren't big/strong enough for serious blood loss (YET!) but i'm very happy not to have kitten hickeys all over my neck and cheeks after letting them cuddle/nurse me last night while i was reading :) they were picked up and brought in by the local cops, so i'm calling them Felony, MisDemeanor and Miranda ;)they're getting close to 4 weeks i think, by size and ability. they are happy to gorge on wet food when offered and they are very hungry, but boy, they need their bottles, lol!~ and all 3 look identical, except Felony (male) is visually a tad bigger. i'm using beet juice to mark the girl's ears so i can tell the 3 apart at a glance for feeding etc.

i understand kids going feral and did think that the candy stash would get bagged, but the optimist in me would have liked a different outcome :) it's sad they didn't think of others . . .  but on the up side, kids with parents in tow were very thoughtful, almost painfully so.

    and yes, the kittens are a treat! OMG, the cuteness/softness factors just rock! {swoon}

    YES!!!!!!!!

I'm tossed though . . .  would LOVE to see them win in da City :) My sis lives in the hood/down the street where the stadium is, so if they make it back here, I may just have to venture to her place. I was there when the '9ers did it, could do it again :)

*please note, I was a Giants fan when I moved to NYC :)

    That's really tiny!

I think little kittens are just about the most wonderful thing there is.  If only they didn't grow so ridiculously fast.  I adore them as adults, but kittens are the absolute best, IMO.  <sigh>

They do bond intensely if you have them at about 8 weeks or earlier.  After that, they start to get past that really serious bonding thing.  They can be great friends even so, but won't consider you their Goddess, the way they do if you started when they were really little.

i'm having a great time. they are SO freakin' cute. love the innocence. i can put all 3 in one hand as a kitten pile or hold them as a bouquet :) and then there's the 'smooshies' with them :) they are pretty sturdy, so it's fun watching them get their 'sea legs' :)

they def think of me as "mom". it would be great if i was in the 'market' for a kitten or 2 or 3, as they are going to be great, but i will pass them on. it will open me up for more bottle babies though :) ah, the joys of working at home, lol!~
