Making The Case: Boise And TCU Have The Floor

Entering the college bowl season, there were 5 unbeaten teams left in college football. Two of them meet in the national championship game - Alabama and Texas. 1 of them, Cincinnati, met Florida in the Sugar Bowl. Cincy got pasted by 27 points in a game that was not that close. So much for the idea that the Bearcats were the best team. The last two - TCU and Boise State, meet tonight in the Fiesta Bowl. Both teams have a chance to make their case tonight that they are the best teams.

TCU is a 7 point favorite. Sagarin has TCU as 4 points better. The teams met a year ago in the Poinsetta Bowl, with TCU eking out a 1 point win. Boise has a signature win over Pac 10 champion Oregon (not so valuable now that the Pac 10 has been exposed in the bowls.) TCU won the Mountain West, which has shined in the bowl games.

I think TCU is the better team. I think they win and cover. I like the Horned Frogs (-7).

Could be an audition... (none / 0) (#1)

...for the big conferences as well.  BSU is rumoured to be on the list for inclusion in the BigTen and TCU is a said to be a possible replacement in the Big 12 should someone like Missouri go to the BT.

    Not a snowball's chance.

The Rutgers suggestion was met with opposition because of the travel distances.

Your volleyball team has to go from College Station PA to Boise.  Your golf team, etc.

    Not gonna happen.

If the Big Ten picks a 12th school it will have to be geographically contiguous.

...have to travel from Iowa City to Happy Valley now.  Not much difference in travel time to get to Boise.

Personally, I'd like to see Mizzu rather than Rutgers or Pitt.

It's not going to be solely about geography, it is going to come down to television markets, athletics and academics.  Cincinnati and Louisville were being talked about too, but don't have the academics.

Yes.  That's part of the Big Ten's advantage over other conferences.

That's why geography contiguous to the Big Ten would be a factor; yield more TV sets.  Certainly few TV sets would be added with Boise State.

If Boise State is serious about big time recognition they should campaign for admittance in the PAC-10.

I have an unfounded impression that they wish to remain in the current situation.  They get more publicity and more opportunity as the great threat to the majors than they would ever get as just another member of a major conference.

Bank on it, their won-lost record and unique appeal would diminish in a major conference environment.

They've been trying to get into another conference--specifically Mountain West and to a lesser extent Pac-10. The schools in these conferences have been less than enthusiastic about the prospect.

So I say Boise, 7. But then I have to say Broncs, since I'm sitting here in my new blue Boise /Fiesta Bowl t-shirt in Boise.

Thanks for deigning to include our little teams n your consideration here, BTD. Heh.

    No doubt.

I think TCU has an outstanding team, maybe the best in the country.

I think Alabama and Florida are a cut above Texas and Boise.

My own rankings as of now are 1. Alabama, 2. TCU, 3. Florida, 4. Boise, 5. Texas.

Other than Oregon, they couldn't really show what they had this season. That, admittedly, makes me nervous going into tonight. And the jitters Kellen is showing early on here.

BTW, you saw that Coach Pete signed on for a new five-year contract? So you rapacious Gator folks are just going to have to wait (or make it very, very worth his while, but since he's the guy that told the university to split his raise up among his assistant coaches his first year as head, he won't be easily bribed).

with including Boise State among the top 5.  The conference they play in is simply not challenging enough to warrent consideration.

Boise State's victory over Oregon at home in the opener means little.  Oregon was foolish to schedule that game on the road. It was a no win situation.

The week in week out pounding in a major conference should be a prerequisite for consideration, not an occasional win against a major conference team.

I wouldn't rank Boise State in the top ten.

Congrats Bronco's.  At least one football team with that name had a good year!
