    U.S. exports anti-gay hatred to Uganda (5.00 / 1) (#20)
by caseyOR on Mon Jan 04, 2010 at 05:31:08 AM EST
According to a story in the NY Times, the supporters of that shocking and horrendous effort in Uganda to make homosexuality a capital offense received advice and assistance from members of the good old American Christian Right.

In the story the Americans who went to Uganda to advise officials there on the evils perpetrated by the queers are now insisting they never meant that the gays should be, you know, killed, not like really executed or anything. Just maybe tormented and jailed and tortured in doomed attempts to convert them to heterosexuality. All for their own good of course.

I was horrified when I first learned of the proposed "kill the queers" law. Now that I know American Christians played a role in this travesty I am disgusted and furious beyond belief.

Read the story at this link.

I'll give it a check when I have time. It could be a case of concept gone wrong. In general, I think it would be good to have "bad" cooks get helped from pros, but not sure if I would want a laugh factor thrown in or a dumb down.

sh*t the bed yesterday, I was rooting for your Jets.  Nice way to close down the Meadowlands.

Really peeved me that I had to root for the Raiders for the Bronco's to have a shot at the play-offs.  That's just not right...

At this point, I'm glad they didn't make it. I don't need the heartbreak.

Sorry about the Broncs bro...talk about a meltdown.  Losing at home to the Chiefs is pretty sad.

I'll be very happy if we get to the Divisional round...that would be an excellent showing for Ryan in his first year.  And the way we're running it, and our D...who knows, maybe an AFC Championship Game isn't out of the question.

by MileHi Hawkeye on Mon Jan 04, 2010 at 09:18:16 AM EST
...that 6 and 0 start got the expectations a little too high.  You can't go very far with a finish like they had--not even winning one divisional game at home.  Oh well, I figured they'd be doing well to finish .500 when the season started--rookie coach and running back and a first year QB and all.

Defense and being able to run the ball is what it takes to win in the play-offs--just as long as they don't turn the ball over.

tough break for the Pats...though that Edelman (sp?) kid has shown he can make some plays in the slot.  The Ravens are another team built for Jan...Rice and McGahee are a nice 1-2 punch.  I think it'll be a good hard fought game.

by CST on Tue Jan 05, 2010 at 01:37:55 PM EST
is a huge loss.  Not just for his own yardage but also Randy Moss.  He kills teams that double-cover Randy Moss.

Edelman is good, but he's no Welker.

Honestly though, I think this year was a bit of a rebuilding year.  It would be nice to see them do well in the playoffs of course.  But I'm encouraged by our pretty good rookie D and next year when they have a bit more experience, and Brady is there all year, and hopefully Welker and Moss are solid, I think we could be really dangerous.

I'd feel a lot better about this year though if Brady stopped throwing so many picks...  And if BeliCHECK was more consistent.  Still, it's the playoffs, anything can happen.

Bobby DeLaughter headed to prison (none / 0) (#23)

The prosecutor who secured the conviction in the Medgar Evers murder case is headed to prison for obstruction of justice for lying to the FBI in a corruption case.

Bobby DeLaughter -- the prosecutor who secured the conviction in the infamous Medgar Evers Mississippi murder case -- is himself now headed to prison.

It was DeLaughter's dogged 1994 prosecution and the subsequent conviction of Ku Klax Klan member Byron De La Beckwith that helped trigger the reopening of dozens of civil rights cold cases.

DeLaughter became an instant hero of the civil rights movement. Alec Baldwin portrayed him in the 1996 movie, "Ghosts of Mississippi," and his closing statement was once dubbed one of the greatest closing arguments in modern law.

"Is it ever too late to do the right thing?" DeLaughter told the jury of eight blacks and four whites. "For the sake of justice and the hope of us as a civilized society, I sincerely hope and pray that it's not."

DeLaughter would go on to become a state judge in 2002. His years in the robe came to an end in 2009, when DeLaughter pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice for lying to an FBI agent in a far-reaching corruption probe that has rocked Mississippi's judicial system.
