"Damages" Does Bernie Madoff

The new season of "Damages" begins tonight on FX (10 pm ET). It's a fictionalized version of the Bernard Madoff case (without using their names of course.) The New York Times explains and gives it a big thumbs up, especially for Lily Tomlin who plays the financier's wife.

Rose Byrne is now a D.A. but she and Patty continue their complex and bizarre relationship.

the prospect of 'Damages' later was the only thing that got me out of bed this dreary Monday.

Been waiting for this show to come back! I can even put up with Rose Byrne's horrendous acting because everything else is so good!

I'm a little worried that this will be the season it "jumps the shark" but I'm willing to take a chance on a new plot line because I love the premise and the characters.

Did you see it yet? (none / 0) (#7)

No shark jumping quite yet! If anything the writing has sharpened up - giving Tomlin and Short some great stuff.

    I'm a little wary of them using a "ripped (none / 0) (#3)

from the headline" story ala Law & Order, but the first two seasons were excellent.

    I feel sure that will just be a (5.00 / 1) (#5)

jumping off point for this series. Something to  help avoid a lot of plot exposition. Hope they don't let me down!

    Law & Order has a Madoff episode, too. (none / 0) (#4)

Edward Herrmann plays the Madoff character, with Jill Eikenberry (of L.A. Law) playing his wife. It's a pretty good episode; the icing on the cake is the behind-the-scenes backbiting it shows going on between TV news anchors. (Yeah, the plot is convoluted, but that's par for the course with L&O.)

    Just finished watching (none / 0) (#8)

It was great, so much better than Season 2. Agree Lily Tomlin and Martin Short are really good additions. I've never liked Rose Byrne, and considering she's playing a prosecutor getting people to flip, I like her even less. But the action was fast paced enough that she wasn't on the screen that long at any one time.

Can't wait to see how Patty's "stalker" (the "architect" figures in.)

They also played it without commercials, and Glenn Close came on at the very end to thank everyone for watching. Nice touch.

Glad you liked it too (none / 0) (#9)

Yes, should be interesting to see what role 'the architect' plays in the story, also the homeless man. I was wondering if 'the architect' is going to be someone she is imagining, but I hope they do not go that route with this character.

    Campbell Scott - awesome!

Rose Byrne does grate - I can't decide if she is a bad actor or a totally original one.  I'm glad to see her wardrobe and hair toned down though - I never could figure out how she got any real work done in some of those other outfits. In any event, there is a lot of other story going on this time - she won't get as much screen time.

Off to a good start! but I guess we already know one character who won't be back next season.
