Couple of DVD recommends for the musical theater (5.00 / 1) (#6)
by ruffian on Mon Jan 18, 2010 at 07:22:10 PM EST
fans. I go on binges of these things. All available from Netflix.

    1. DA Pennebaker documentary of the 1971 studio session for original cast recording of  'Company'.  Very interesting to watch them get the performances just right, and Stephen Sondheim just coming into his own.  Will Elaine Stritch make it through 'Ladies Who Lunch' at 4 am? You'll have to watch.

    2. 'Follies in Concert', around 1986. Another Sondheim documentary of the rehearsals and concert. With Barbara Cook, Lee Remick, Carol Burnett, George Hearn, Elaine Stritch, and more.

    3. 'Candide' in concert, 2006 or so. No documentary to this one, just the performance at Lincoln Center, with Kristen Chenoweth and Patti LuPone. Kind of long - I didn't watch every minute, but  funny. And you get to see Kristen show off her opera chops.

    I'm a fan....

I'll definitely check these out.  I'm a big musical theater fan (to the extent that I frequently annoy my husband by incessantly singing musical theater songs).

Focus on the Family Tebow ad in a fashion that I can totally get behind.  I gotta say it on TalkLeft too and not just SportsLeft, I have read that Pam Tebow has said in the past that she was told that Tim Tebow was a life threatening pregnancy and she chose to carry the pregnancy to term.  I'm going to have to see those medical records from the Philippines though Pam before you can just run around talking about how brave you are compared to other women facing life threatening pregnancies.  I also did a bit of research about amoebic dysentery and I don't know what strong antibiotic she took that they strongly claimed would have deformed her fetus.  Flagyl is suspicious at best, but most ObGyn's are fine with it if it has to be used in the first trimester.  They have no problem with it in the second or third trimester.  One ObGyn says that there is only controversy about Flagyl.  They will avoid it if they can.  So what were these dangerous to the fetus antibiotic drugs she was given too that she was told meant she needed to abort the pregnancy?  Women's groups will be hitting this Jesus story hard if this ends up being what this commercial is about, and they need to.

I keep hoping.  We watched 'Year One' yesterday and 'Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs' today.  I will watch a movie called 'Trucker' shortly.  Have no idea what to expect there.  When I told my husband that we loved 'Avatar' he borrowed a copy floating around to watch because yes, you can buy bootleg 'Avatar' in Afghanistan just like you can in South Korea and Iraq too.  My husband said 'Hurt Locker' is stupid but refused to go into WHY it is stupid.  Too much information on the phone I guess or something.

    I watched the Last Mimzy (none / 0) (#2)

and The Box recently. I thought Mimzy was pretty good, definitely a good kids' movie.
The Box had potential but had too many extraneous plot elements. Plus, the cgi on Frank Langella's face just looked silly.
I'm about to watch "Godspeed", set in Alaska.
Something about a faith healer and a bunch of murders. I hope it's different, anyway.

'Godspeed'.  We like Mimzy too.  'Year One' is a good Jack Black movie.  I particularly wanted to see Michael Cera in it since he has grown on me since 'Juno'.  Here is a good clip, Cain is who is sentencing them though and it leaves off footage of Cain also finding them guilty of the unsolved murder of his brother Abel.

It hasn't lost its touch. I still think the best place to watch it is on the treadmill at the gym  (downloaded from itunes to ipod) -- the 45 minutes just flies by and you don't even realize you are exercising.

the Super Bowl this year will be held at the stadium formerly known as Joe Robbie Stadium, Pro Player Park, Pro Player Stadium, Dolphins Stadium, Dolphin Stadium (dropped the "s"), Land Shark Stadium, Dolphin Stadium (again), and now Sun Life Financial Stadium.

Thank god we still have places like Fenway and Wrigley. Places that keep their name across generations (at least for now).

one of the first naming rights fields....after Wrigley's Gum?

Point well taken though...it pains me to say the Yankees got it right with the new joint still called Yankee Stadium, while my beloved Mets went all corporate schill jumping into bed with Sh*ttyBank.
