From "They All Disappoint" File

This dkos diary provides me an opening to AGAIN republish my 2007 They All Disappoint post:

The best show on television today is "The Wire." In subsequent entries, I'll explain why I think so. Its new season, Season 5, starts in January and The Wire will be one of the things I write about. Season 4 focused on politics a good deal.

At the finale to Season 4, the new mayor of Baltimore, where the show is set, is faced with the dilemma of doing "the right thing" and doing what he perceives is the right thing politically (the plot point involves "eating sh[*]t" so the Baltimore schools get money it needs vs. what's right for his shot at being Governor. You know what he does.

Afterwards, his close aide, who fought the campaign with him, discusses this with the chief of staff of the former mayor, saying "can't believe he left the money on the table." The former COS responds "they all disappoint." And indeed, they do. They've all disappointed, even Lincoln, FDR and Bobby Kennedy.

As citizens and activists, our allegiances have to be to the issues we believe in. I am a partisan Democrat it is true. But the reason I am is because I know who we can pressure to do the right thing some of the times. Republicans aren't them. But that does not mean we accept the failings of our Democrats. There is nothing more important that we can do, as citizens, activists or bloggers than fight to pressure DEMOCRATS to do the right thing on OUR issues.

And this is true in every context I think. Be it pressing the Speaker or the Senate majority leader, or the new hope running for President. There is nothing more important we can do. Nothing. It's more important BY FAR than "fighting" for your favorite pol because your favorite pol will ALWAYS, I mean ALWAYS, disappoint you.

In the middle of primary fights, citizens, activists and bloggers like to think their guy or woman is different. They are going to change the way politics works. They are going to not disappoint. In short, they are not going to be pols. That is, in a word, idiotic.

Yes, they are all pols. And they do what they do. Do not fight for pols. Fight for the issues you care about. That often means fighting for a pol of course. But remember, you are fighting for the issues. Not the pols.

Yes. I told you so.

    Kos getting interesting again? (5.00 / 1) (#4)

I haven't punched the kos url into my browser since some time in 2008.  I was fine with all the hate for my favorite candidate, but I really got sick of posting comments and then having a hundred comment long set of replies debating about the merits of my comments based on my user id (which sequentially tells whether I joined Kos before or after a particular user).  The constant barrage of "you're not welcome here...go to a Hillary blog instead" didn't help either.  (Funny thing, though, is that I don't read most of those so-called "Hillary Blogs" any more either.)

But now it looks like it could be worth reading again, if just for the sheer entertainment value.

On a semi-unrelated note, I love seeing the statistics of how many email addresses team Obama collected.  I never once gave them mine, and I STILL get near constant campaign mail.  I will give them credit for efficiency in collecting email addresses, I guess.

    Loved this one:

Additionally, I dont think the netroots was ever really Obama's base. He had a decent number of supporters here, but Edwards always won the monthly polls when he was in the race. And, from what I could tell, most blogs were either for Clinton or Edwards.

    Seriously funny stuff.

If this keeps up, I'll have your damn column committed to memory and frankly, the memory card is running out of room.

...because that diary made me laugh out loud?

I guess. But c'mon, this is comedy gold here:

This makes me feel taken. This makes me feel stupid. This makes me feel played. This makes me feel icky.

Apparently it should also make them feel deaf and blind, because so many people tried to tell them.....

get it though.  Fighting for the issues if that in some way makes the President look bad will not be tolerated.  Bringing up the fact that putting bad policy in place can have future election consequences will also not be tolerated.

Oh my, the diarist does go on (none / 0) (#6)

and on and on. . . .  All those feelings!  Rivals a Las Vegas lounge singer (allusion to that awful song, "Feelings":-).

Funny part is the dawning realization of the diarist that an email list is top-down strategy.  Uh, yeh.  Did the diarist really think Obama was reading the replies?  Did the diarist forget that Obama didn't even read the replies when diarying on DKos?

    So naive.
